In Vietnamese words of similar meaning are often put together to improve the understanding by this redundance. For many meanings two or more words exist, for examle at least two words for "tired", that can stand alone ore can be put together. Their order is then normally fixed but can be changed for requirements of music, so that the low tone of speech hits the low tone of the melody. *** In children´s stories redundant clusters seem to be quite common. Example: "Chàng trai trẻ" = young male guy.

mệt mỏi, we can just say mệt. But is mỏi by itself a valid word?
@LearnVietnameseWithAnnie
@LearnVietnameseWithAnnie 2 жыл бұрын
Yes it is. You can say, for example, after a long walk, “Mỏi chân quá” (My legs are very tired.)

It's usually used to mean tired, but in a specific scenario where you're tired because of repeated or prolonged activities. Like in the example given by Annie, you should say "mỏi chân quá" after a long walk or standing for hours 😁

làm việc and việc làm seems to be identical to “工作” and "作工" though neither of them are of Chinese origin.

In Cantonese = lam wut meaning to work. see how identical they are when you compare with other language in china

@@ghostland8646 I wondered what is "lam woek" and I cannot figure out what is "work". I though about "joek" but it makes nonsense. Okay then you changed to "wut" and then I could figure what what it is. However, it's just like the relationship between, for example, “wood” and “木”. It's ever farther than false friends.

@@ghostland8646 I know that. Wut could make sense.

Im lặng là vàng và tôn trọng cũng là vàng. I’m trying to say,” silent is gold and respect is also gold” is this sounds awkward to you? Trying to practice on writing and speaking. Thanks

Not really. Quite a few of the consonants and vowels with diacritics have surprising/unusual pronunciations, especially in the South. E.g., Dớt = "Yuck"!
