I hate the idea that artists _have_ to draw all ethnicities in order to “not be racist”. No one should be told what they have to draw, and morality should not be tied to the feature set an artist gives his characters. Mangaka (or however it’s spelled) typically only draw Asian features-heck, the anime style tends to put Asian-esque features on _all_ races! Most people still find that acceptable. So if one artist only wants to draw people with an African sub set of features, that person should go right ahead. That applies to Europeans, Asians, Latin Americans, indigenous peoples, etc.

I am a black artist who draws mostly black people, but tries to dive into drawing other ethnic groups. My two cents is that you draw what you want as long as it isn't harmful (You know exactly what kind of illegal drawing I mean-). Artists should have the freedom to enjoy what they make without worrying about making people upset or being called racist. Art should make an artist happy.

Agree. Draw what you like. As a brown artist, I personally draw colourful array of casts because I like it. However, when it comes to creating media (comic, animation, etc.), diversity may actually come into consideration coz at that point, I am not my only main audience anymore

This is old but, just in case, you also might want to see your doctor about the shakes if you haven't. Maybe you know what causes it and there isn't a solution, or you think there isn't, maybe you don't know. But my partner loves to do art and his shaky hands got really bad, he has some inherited disorder and he didn't think there was anything to do for it. But he went to the doctor and they put him on some kind of blockers (beta, maybe?) that he takes when he plans to do something that helps with his fine finger movement. Really not trying to be the one up in your medical business or anything, just posting in case it is helpful.

I always had people ask me why I didn't draw black people ever since I was a kid and I've had a life time of guilt for not learning, then when I finally did it, it turned out awful and had even more guilt. Learning is a process we shouldn't be rushed or pressured into but instead we naturally fall into it on our journey of being an artist, if that makes sense(?). I'm not good with words haha but thank you so much for what you said in this video about drawing POC, it really changed my perspective on the situation and gave me a lot more confidence in what I draw ❤❤

TL;DR: Don't mind people, draw what you want how you want it, not drawing black people isn't racist! Same goes for "black features" because all you really need is a darker skin tone if you do want to, it's as simple as that in my book. Don't ever feel guilty! Honestly as a POC I always thought that all you need to make a black character is just to, well, add their skin tone. I have an anime art style, so I tend to not draw the big lips or noses that people tend to think all POC have to have. It's perfectly fine to just draw as you normally do and just add a skin tone, you really don't have to draw races a certain way because that's you're style you're comfortable with and people need to learn to accept that. Also, never feel forced to color your characters just to have "representation". It's really nice to have such but like if I go to a mcdonalds I'm not gonna walk in and demand chinese food for "better" representation, so if others want a specific type of art then they should go to the artists that *actually* draw that way instead of hounding others. Find commisions, etc!

the line thinning tip ( 1:14 ) is good for people who aren't using pressure sensitive tool (Ie: drawing on a phone with their finger) so its harder to get line thickness variation where you want it. otherwise I agree about practicing.

I've had the same problem drawing non white characters. White is the "default" for many people and once you become accustomed to it you stop thinking about it 😔 I myself am a non white person and I'd like to be more inclusive of different skin tones but I feel like I can't show progress because people will think it's purposefully bad.

As a POC, almost all of my characters that are black have asian features because I've always been inspired by the anime artstyle and I think that's perfectly fine! Sometimes you don't have to worry about certain features, just focus on the coloring because there are plenty of black people that are either mixed or just simply have very similar face shapes to other ethnicities, even white people!

Hi y'all! I draw characters with dark skin tones pretty often and I want to share some things that help me! Sometimes on very dark skin, strong shading may become too harsh or even not show up much at all, so adding extra brightness to areas that light is hitting can help add some more depth and balance that out. Use your light source to build height. For picking nice skin colors, I like to use a slightly desaturated dark red or orange to help add some natural blush to the whole body. Personally I do not find the lighter orange and yellow section of the color wheel to make very lifelike colors even for pale skin so I avoid it. Really just try not to use anything grayish because all skin has blood behind it. Obvi my advice isn't perfect but I hope somebody finds it useful! Look at lots of tutorials made by black artists and don't be afraid to try! 💕

I draw since I can remember existing as an individual in the world, and truth is that you can just... draw. Honestly, the people who are very toxic and annoying are mostly just chronically online and a minority. Most people who do art are actually nice and will encourage and help you if you need, especially if you ever meet them in person. Also, I know it sounds crazy in this day and age, but I really advice you to not care too much abt what people think of you and your art. It's been almost 2 years since I last posted anything art-related anywhere bc I just... don't use social media anymore?? I just draw to myself, to make gifts for my close friends, and that's it. It did put an end to a lot of my insecurities. It's amazing if you want popularity, fame or even just sharing your art with the world, but it is not an obligation and you don't need it to validate what you do.

As a black artist who didn't know how to draw black people and got a lot of criticism growing up for it. It's better to practice and learn in private if it is something you wish to do and follow tutorials from actual black artist who make an effort to teach people so you don't come off as trying to be racist or anything really. I still don't know how to draw braids, locks, or curly hair but I try and I know I can always do better so keep practicing. Plus I find that learning how to draw other races, media, and different art forms can actually help you improve your knowledge as an artist so if in the future you have to do or make something for say a client, ur not gonna have any trouble creating it.

... maybe this is weird, but that lineart video really struck me. I think a lot of artists (including me!) forget that an eraser is just as much of a drawing tool as anything else. It's totally valid to purposely over-draw and then use the eraser to cut things away. The last video with the clouds re-emphasized that, too. An eraser isn't just for getting rid of mistakes; you can very much use it to create art in its own right. Yeah, I learned this in class at some point, but I always forget! sometimes when you overcomplicate your brain when drawing, like you're always seeing tiny mistakes or sometimes you don't notice mistakes. What tends to help is to draw a sketch, and then leave it for a bit and do something else before you continue. This helps with viewing your art with new eyes. You can spot mistakes or spot things you forgot to add before.

Loved the video, just wanted to add to 5:00 about the price for commissions... what some of y'all don't understand, is how valuable dollars currency is in some other countries, like for example, 3 dollars is worth a full day pay of my 8hour job. It's not that people don't value their art, it's just that US dollars are worth a lot in some countries, and they set the price to what they feel is reasonable.

I am an artist on the so called global south and while I understand the rationale of your argument (USD buys more in these countries et al) selling yourself cheap isn't long term sustainable anywhere, not even in the cheapest countries. Two buck commissions may buy you the day's meal, but not a better living, nor enabling you to upgrade your gear to stay competitive, let alone have savings... and the list goes on and on. If all we have left to compete against the rest is price, we've already lost. Just something I felt the need to clear out.

@@alzamonart First off, much love, and sorry for the essay, it ended up longer than intended xD The case I was making was mostly for those who have 15 dollars or so commissions. In my case, I'd say 40 hours worth of pay for a 5 hour drawing is good enough. You are indeed correct that you shouldn't sell yourself and your art cheap, and that's what they're doing. As I said before it's not that they're selling themselves cheap, it's that they're setting a price they believe is fair, based on the time and the quality that they provide in comparison to a job they might have. Not to mention the competition in the industry to getting commisions and some traffic and interactions with costumers. Those who take 2 dollars for their commissions are like an entirely different story. They're either just trying to make some money off of their hobby or are just school kids making some pocket money. I'm a big believer in "your art speaks for itself". You don't see someone with sam's level of drawing going around doing commissions for 3 bucks. Last but not least, the people who are buying the 2 dollar commissions aren't really looking for quality content anyway. The 2 dollar artists aren't really stealing many costumers away, cause their costumers would rather have cheap meh art than normal/exceptional art that costs more. All that being said I feel like it's not really gonna matter much in 5 years with all these ai art apps surfacing. Sorry again for the rant, and feel free to discuss further if you have a different opinion

@@k.t.aidara3989 About the "aren't really stealing many costumers away": It's true. People who goes for low price products are never intended on gettin the ones that costs more. And same goes for AI products. If someone uses that then it means that person never intended to pay any money in the first place. And it can be understandable. Like as there are people who getting the products for D&D characters or online roleplaying. Or maybe they just like that person's product more. But to be honest, i personally happy about the advancements of AI, because this way it will become less of a privilege to make a png. And believe or not, but there are people who act on that way as if they were above others just because they draw stuff online (and usually the ones acting like that are making bad looking images, so the spoiled brat type of people), and the AI finally would give them a reality-check and maybe a huge slap.

@@gianna526 I'm 32 and living on my own and sometimes I draw stuff that even I find silly or weird, but it gives me freedom to draw it. Usually I chuck it afterwards, unless I did it well. A while ago, someone joked about a sheep seductively twerking and I drew it (realistically, not cartoon!) and kept it. Some Welsh people thought it was hilarious when I shared it online, some English folk responded too, I made them a foxy fox to match. There's nothing you shouldn't draw, nothing. you can draw anyone and anything.

About the 2 dolar commission, literally the most annoying customers are the ones who have paid the less, the ome who paid 10 dolars always are like "can you cuange this?" "Oh I changed my mind make it look like before" " oh sorry, can you make them wear this other clothes?" And they kept me days with a 10$ commission when I would be ready to move onto another one, whilst the expensive ones's customers are super wholesome and tolerant, that is another reason why you shouldn't charge so low, prices are like a filter, they filter the annoying ones from the ones who respect you, your craft and your time.

As someone who is also afraid of drawing Black and POC characters, it's terrifying to try and risk being torn apart by others. It doesn't matter what the intent was if it was done wrong, people on the internet are going to perceive it however they wish. I've seen it enough times, especially on twitter bc it's like an echo chamber. Of course it's possible to do art studies without sharing them (which I am planning to do), but overall I love drawing and creating fanart of my favorite shows and books and sharing them as a way to connect and communicate with others.

Black people have very diverse features and many races features overlap with one another. If anything, people are trying too hard to be progressive and end up becoming a bit regressive in that they stereotype black people and other POC to only having certain features. As long as you don't make any ignorant comments in regards to the features, you'd be fine aside from the people that will always find a way to hate.

just draw from observation, so many of these baby artists start straight up with cartoony and anime styles (i was one of those artists) but DONT DO THAT cus it will totally stunt your growth as an artist. always take time to draw from observation, if all your references are just other ppls art your art will always be a product of their design philosophy and not your own interpretation of different people, objects, or subjects. the reason why so many ppl cant draw black ppl is because black representation in anime and cartoons is still pretty new, and thats where so many young artists take inspiration

When my niece first started her art career. I gave you the tools i love to use when sketching traditionally. And the one tip i gave them (which applies to the cleaning up line art trick) is “you can draw with your eraser” to refine shapes, clean you sketch into nice lineart, add line weight. So much more.

Honestly as a person who is absolutely terrible at lineart, once I figured to try and just clean up the sketch instead of lining it, I drew 2 of my favourite things that I’ve ever done. Up until that point I used to go for a no lineart style and while it sometimes worked and looked great, I was really bummed that I couldn’t go for a more comic book style, since my lineart skills sucked. Of course the sketch cleanup technique probably isn’t the most efficient and I do eventually want to get better at lining, it’s super helpful for the time being.

I used to draw regularly as a kid but then some time after 16 I just stopped. I wasnt bad or anything and I enjoyed it but a lot of life circumstances got in the way. I then became disabled and about 5 years ago I started drawing again because I had the free time and it helped me get my mind off the pain. I always drew on paper but I wanted to learn digital drawing. I was lucky enough to receive a used ipad and apple pencil from some incredible friends for my birthday this year and I had no idea how to start. I started with youtube drawing tutorials and speedpaint vids and honestly, Im so glad I did. I have learned so many different techniques and how to use Procreate. Im not sure why this would be considered a negative because in such a short amount of time I have learned an incredible amount of information and I enjoy drawing regularly now.

This is making me laugh so hard. Tablets were still a concept when I went to art school. The few programs we did have took hours to fully render anything at all. I literally had 24X36 pads of newsprint filled with ellipses and circles. we spent 3 straight weeks just learning how to draw an ellipse! LMAO

here’s my art tip: you don’t have to post everything you draw, especially if you’re learning to draw something new. for everyone afraid of learning to draw fat people, Black people, disabled people, etc because of criticism while you’re learning, it is totally fine to learn and make mistakes in private. i post very little of the art i make, even the art I’m really proud of, because in the end I’m making it for the love of making it. that isn’t to say you can only post polished and complete work, but you don’t need to feel like you have to share every little thing if you’re worried about what people will say.

What’s wrong with watching soeedpaints for motivation and learning? Sure, they definitely can only help you learn so much, but when I was a young unskilled artist, speedpaints taught me more than the tutorials did. And now I watch them to relax and also show myself how beautiful the art process is.
