Excellent tutorial. I love my 20" G4 ... I think it has the most attractive design of any Mac every made. I plan to replace the battery and drop in an SSD drive to mine. It's main use is as an Audio player and with the visualizers and better than average sound through those speakers it always gets noticed in my room.
@ProjectDv27 жыл бұрын
Great tutorial, even with imperfect English you were clear and easy to follow. I plan on doing much of this with mine, though I will leave out the SSD conversion. The bus speed of this aging machine and the bottleneck of the ATA standard makes this machine way too slow to take advantage of any gains offered by an SSD. They're too expensive to throw at a machine that can't even take proper advantage of them.
@ANTube7 жыл бұрын
ProjectDv2 thanks you are right for part of ssd can not be wired in g4 might be better choice to insert an SSHD also considering that ssd is too expensive is also quite well en with sshd you have speed en storage as wel
@laynebumgarner4995 жыл бұрын
Don't put the ssd on the anti-static bag. It's only supposed to protect components on the inside, but the outside CONDUCTS electricity. Not that it would do any damage to the ssd but for future reference.

A.N Tube I would add, I think the original hard drive was in contact with the DVD, anyway, and, even if it were, you’d probably only get continuity between the casing on each, which would be ground. They should have a common ground, anyway. If you want to insulate two surfaces from each other, kapton tape is the best, because it doesn’t expand or contract with thermal stimuli. Cardboard would work, but I would be concerned it would shed dust inside the case over years, but that’s what the original drive was wrapped in. Good enough for Apple, good enough for me. Plasticard, from any model shop, would do the job, too. Me, I’d have just flipped the SSD over, to be sure the only surface touching the drive was the outer casing on the SSD, anyway, and taped it down with kapton tape, like the original hard drive was.

@@jameswoll Unfortunately it did not work because I couldn't find the pinout for the 15" iMac G4 display online, only the 17" and 20" are listed. While I could have attempted to buy a 2008 MacBook display and a converter board to then put that in the iMac G4's enclosure, I decided to simply sell it as working but dead display cable.

You didn't attached a power supply to the IDE-to-SATA-converter, was that intentional or don't you need it for an SSD? I need to know as I want to replace the IDE HD with a mechanical 2.5' Sata 1TB. Additionally. is there a size limit for HDs?

@@absolutely1337 I'm guessing Sata drives included a power connection because there was *no power coming through the serial cable.* If that is the case then I would think there's no power in this video to the SSD in this video unless he attached it off video, I wish he would tel us.

First, if u afraid from causing shorts with the converter cards soldered pins, then cover them with electrical tape or capton tape. That should keep them safe. Second, there are 3,5" converter trays for 2,5" HDDs/SSDs. Fixing in place the SSD with just tapes is not a great idea. The tape can loosen and the drive falls off its place and the converters pins can cause shorts(check the First). Third, swap out that ridiculus fan on top of the case. If the mobo supports PWM, then use a Noctua, Be Quiet! or same quality PWM fans. If not, then pick one of the same brands of the Non-PWM silent modells.

Great video, AN. Tube. Dit everything work fine with the newer HDD? I myself try to do the same, with an SATA SSD and an similar adaptor from Alie-express. Unfortunatly My Imac g4 seems to be unbelieveble picky about the drive. So far I tried an normal SATA HDD with a cloned version of the original drive (cloned with SuperDuper). Also an old laptop HDD with a cloned version of OSX 10.4, an small 64 G SSD from Alie-express, also cloned. I tried an another adaptor between flatcable and laptop HDD. None of them boots and all show the question-mark inside a map when booting. Afterwards the computer hangs. Strangly enough the computer doesn't respond to the keyboard while booting up. So pressing Alt after start doesn't show the bootable options. Not pressing T when selecting target-mode. The only option I so far got working is the old original HDD. And that one is getting noisier every attempt. I must be doing something something but can't seem to find out. What kind of adapter did you use between the SSD and the flatcable. Do you still know type and where to buy? Help is highly appreciated.

@100nickr6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the respons, AN. Tube Indeed it seems one of the older G4's. 15 inch screen 800mh. I tried as you suggested. New (other HD) HDD build in and connected instead of the old HDD. But when its starts up it shows only the map/question mark. It won't respond to the keyboard on my requests, for the boot options. I already found out that the boot options for powerpc are slight different from intelmacs. I learned that the drive jumper cable select/master and slave is very imported. Even the original HDD boots only when CS is selected with the drive jumper

I took me al lot of trial and error. Especially a perfect copy of the original disk brought me some headache. Even superduper dos not do the job perfectly. But I managed to get a working clone-disk. Thanks trough your video and helps. The only thing that doesn't work is accessing the boot-menu while startup. Target-disk and selecting the CD fr startup. But so far I managed to do it all. So eventually that will succeed to, I guess. Thanks A.N. Tube
