Film Brain clutches his teddy bear in this horror film about imaginary friends with an ironic lack of creativity, that sees Blumhouse recycle their tired haunted house tropes yet again.

Boy, I haven't thought of the name Film Brain in years. Funny what the algorithm kicks up. I kinda assumed he retired. Nice to see he's still at it.

Honestly, I'm with you on this. My brother and I took our little sister to see it over the weekend and I'd basically forgotten everything about it by the time it took to get up from my seat and get out of the theater. If they'd gone harder on the horror, or played up the comedic bits more it would've been fine, but what we got was half filler and half weak horror with a few good things here and there. Honestly, if it'd been up to me we would've seen Dune instead.

Blumhouse is pretty much in the business of making trailers. The film associated with that trailer is borderline redbox level shlock that is cheap enough that as long as the trailer gets enough butts in seats for the opening weekend it will make it's money back and everything else is pure profit. They occasionally spend a bit more on bigger properties or when a celebrity wants to direct but by and large it's been running the same basic model for 15 years since Paranormal Activity.

Trailers are to Blunhouse, what VHS Box Design were to Roger Corman. Both got some talent started, among the slop

so bizarre two of the writers on this also worked on Princess and the Frog, I wonder if that's where the potentially clever ideas came from

If you’re looking for an “evil imaginary friend” film that goes wild, I recommend Daniel Isn’t Real, which puts an almost Lovecraftian twist on the concept

Oh heck yes I'm right on time! I've been seeing ads for this for ages, especially since I saw godzilla minus one a bunch and it was played in front of that every time, and it just seemed SO paint by numbers.

The good thing about Blumhouse though is that they have history of making sequels that are miles better than the first movie. They did it for both The Purge and Ouija. So maybe Imaginary 2 will be better?

Gotta stand up for "Drop Dead Fred", here. Not that it's a perfect movie by any means, but since I was a little girl with a not-so-great mom and an imaginary friend, I can relate to it in a big way. That 'goodbye' scene near the end still makes me cry, and I think Rik Mayall could have done more dramatic roles if he wanted to. I'll be the one weirdo who actually really likes that movie, I'm okay with that, lol.

it's also kind of sad to see people who aren't frequent movie goers/into movies as a hobby consistently get hoodwinked by the name on the box. I was seeing a movie a few weeks ago with friends when this trailer popped up, and they both went "oh it's blumhouse! maybe we should go see this". Probably mostly because they produced a few movies that were actually good, but all of their terrible movies get forgotten or brushed under the rug. That being said, I don't think they ended up watching it, so maybe the trailer being generic enough steered them away subconsciously

I saw this movie on Saturday and while i'm not a writer I could've written this movie better. For example I would've combined the therapist and the crazy neighborhood into one character or rewrite the neighborhood to have her be the therapist's friend; and given more development on girl's father. Nothing against the female leads but alot of the characters just felt like one note. If Wadlow really wanted to make this film like poltergeist then him and Blumhouse should've taken this film to MGM.

Alison Lurie wrote an amazing short story about a haunted pool, collected in the book "Women and Ghosts". It manages to talk about the race and class implications of pool access while still being a genuinely frightening story. That being said, the movie Night Swim looks like it has just...nothing.

@@FilmBrainI just watched the movie last month, and greatly enjoyed it! It had a tongue in cheek, yet still epic, story likeable characters, the humour and interplay between them was hilarious, it also had good cinematography and music, and I like that while Jack may be a bit of a snarky jerk and tends to get the brunt of the film’s slapstick, he’s still a loyal, brave friend to Wang, that doesn’t hesitate to help him save his bride-to-be, Miao Yin, and he also genuinely respects them and their culture.

Speaking of M3gan, I hope you'll talk about it's obvious knock off Abigail when it comes out.

I don't think those movies will even be thematically similar. M3GAN is about how you can't substitute the human connection between a caregiver and a child with toys and tech if you want the child to learn emotional regulation and social skills. Abigail is a vampire story, so it will probably explore themes associated with vampires.

Blumhouse has always been about making movies as cheaply as possible and that sometimes delivered a decent one. But now it's like their business model is just to remake the same film over and over again and hope there are enough people out there who've never seen a movie before.

I had a pretty ok experience minus the ending which i felt it stole from Hellraiser II. I do like or appreciate the lead DeWanda Wise and the little girl and just when it gets to the horror stuff at the end where it turns into another Insidious, i was checked out completely.

@@mrliteral9347 I'm remembering an episode about one imaginary friend that seemed so Innocent. The only character that saw past the act was the main character, that was the most annoying. The so called "innocent" character was a total menace. Lol It could of been fun to see imaginary friends, gather around and team up. Trying to get adopted. Once a contract was formed... The child would be drained of life and imagination. Leaving behind a husk.

The show, Supernatural had a good episode of imaginary friends being muuurrerrred. One of mothers of the children just walks through the crime scene without knowing. The main characters, Sam amd Dean are temporarily gifted with the magic to see and interact with the imaginary friends. They are horrified with the mother casually walking through the crime scene, which is a crashes tea party in her daughter's room

Nothing more bitter than a good concept getting wasted. Im picturing imagery and stories on the likes of Silent Hill. What a pity If you do want fun stuff with hostile imaginary friends check out CN’s Destination Imagination or that one episode of Big Wolf on Campus since Drop Dead Fred was mentioned.
