Imaging Planets in a REAL Observatory

They gave me the keys to the Trottier Observatory at SFU and I take her for a spin for the first time! We go hunting for both Saturn and the king, Jupiter. We try out a few different cameras and I do my very best to capture some planetary images for the very first time. Lot's of learning in this one!

Not a bad result for your first run at planetary. As @IceyJones noted in the comments section, Winjupos derotates (compensates for the rotation of the planet during your video capture) and sharpens things nicely when combined with Registax. In Autostakkert use the alignment point function (the more the better - 200 vs. 24). This will help a lot.

Nice and good imaging. Was that x2 televue scopes on the side of the PW. GREAT WORK

Thanks 🙏 yes, that is 2x televue refractors that form a periscope for visual observation. Good eye!

Amazing ! Inspiring stuff. I will definitely join RASC finally and bring the kids to an event instead of selfishly shooting on the deck by myself !

Good try, well done. Planetary is much trickier than most people realize. Those 2 refractors did not do you any favors in your image train, all the best for your next attempt. Damo

you took a VERY long video. if i saw that right, that were over 10k frames. i assume, that the planet rotation already stuck here, adding additional blur. there is a tool called winjupos, that is able to DEROTATE the image according to jupiters position and your setup. worth a try
