Born after chewing gum was banned in 1992, artist Chris Chew never knew what he was missing out on until he visited his grandparents in Malaysia. So for his next artwork, Chris pays tribute to the infamous chewing gum. What was life like in Singapore before gum was banned? Chris journeys through the 1970s and 80s when gum-chewing was at its height, and uncovers nostalgic stories of the Singaporean #gumlife - as well as some really nasty ones, like the case of the chewing gum villain in Toa Payoh who terrorised HDB residents for two weeks in 1977 with his obnoxious gum-sticking. Which all leads Chris to chew on this question - what led to the ban of chewing gum in the first place? Was it littering, or was there more to the story than he imagined?

The Chewing Gum Banned was not a issue of Clealiness but more to do with election sabotaging...Back when the MRT was first opened, it faced many issues...and this did not help the next Singapore Election in a few years time. So With tracing back steps and looking at how the MRT Ran, A Conclusion was made that Chewing Gum was used to Block the Door sensors and other components of the MRT to function well. Through deep analysis, it was found out that this was sabotaging done by political opponents.

The Problem of Clealiness or being responsible only came up as another method to bring forward the idea that Chewing Gum had a reason to be banned,downplaying the reason of political sabotage. It was kinda of a "Shotgun" type of law that was passed so that we would have political stability in Singapore

1:26 You are so brave to admit it. But such a disgrace to do it. When chewing gum is allowed here, I don't even do stick the gum everywhere and dispose of it properly. It is due to people like you that caused chewing gum to be banned here.

9:00 If consumption is not banned, how to get access to chewing gums since to bring in chewing gum is considered an offence ?
@UltraElexiel

Bringing in like 1 or 2 is not a issue, they will close one eye. What they mean by bringing in is importing, bringing in big boxes and stuff. People normally get a pack or 2 from malaysia

@@UltraElexiel Yes I know that. But strictly it is a grey area. Officially it is banned totally.

@@SuccessforLifester sale of it is banned, personal consumption is fine, if you can throw it away like a responsible person, which is rare with gum chewers sometimes...

@@UltraElexiel I know. It is just that piece of law that bugs me. the bad feeling of needing to bring in one or two pieces in stealthily due to that blanket law. We never know when they would go all out to enforce.

Great content but two things 1. Not sure if it's a good idea to say u stick gum around "here and there in" msia. That's pretty inconsiderate 2. I love that u r sharing history , but probably a less mechanical vibe from the presenter would be great. Just sound too rigid.

I supported and still support the ban despite loving the bubble gum 'competitions' I took part in with friends and cousins. I loved chewing gum then since it was also a cheap and refreshing 'snack' that lasted an entire bus ride from one end of the island to the other. There was also a tasty individually wrapped chewing gum that came packaged in a wrapper with a water "tattoo". Still, besides the inconvenience of getting rid of the gum after stepping on fresh and sticky gum, there was the disgusting encounters of touching "left behind" gum under bus seats, and worse, having chewing gum stick to your hair from leaning against seat "pillars" at old bus stops. The main reason I support and still do support the ban is simply because when I was in primary school, our principal implemented a rotational duty roster where upper primary classes took turns through the year cleaning different areas in the school. We would rather clean toilets than to clean the basketball courts and canteen. Litter picking at those areas was easy enough but, cleaning the basketball courts and canteen meant we were given steel scrapers and had to go on our knees scraping off old chewing gum from the floors. It was painful, hard work and not to mention, disgusting. It was so disgusting that we learned at that age that we had to be responsible for the gum we chewed even without being explicitly told. We knew to keep the wrappers in our pockets so as to dispose the gum back in the wrapper.

Ya I miss chewing gum. Lol.. Going to grass patch to "remove" them... lol I remember chewing gum was wrap with a silver aluminium and a paper. The aluminium was for us to "pui" the gum out into it before discard. But Singaporean just don't heed advice. Sad.. Ownself sabo ownself
