should you keep lowering output of plugins to keep it at -12db? For example when you add a compressor to the 808 do you lower the gain of it again so it is at -12db? Then when you add a saturator to the 808 again do you lower out put so it hits at -12db? There other variables also. If there is Parrelel compression channel on the kick or snare for example. should that also be gain staged to hit that bus at -12db? I did not see any of that in this important video.

No mastering engineer cares about your peak level as long as you don't go above 0dbFS. In fact if you leave 6,02dbFS headroom you are loosing 1bit of your 24bit wav file. No idea where all this unproven urban legends come from, but videos like this make it spread around.

I send my mixes to my mastering engineer peaking at around -0.1 all the time, it doesn’t matter. I’m not an expert but my mastering engineer has been Grammy nominated multiple times and has no issue with the level I’ve sent. The key in my opinion is to not hit a limiter (or at least only lightly) before sending it. You can get a good, dynamic -12 to -10 LUFS mix without hitting a limiter just with experience.
@alexisescobedo68623 жыл бұрын
From my experience, I master my beats loud but try to keep it under 0.3db just to make sure it doesn’t clip. Most KZbin beats are already mastered pretty loud so I don’t think it really matters how loud it is as long as it’s not clipping

@@GG-zv9ku We all work with 24bit audio in an 64bit floating point environment. 10db more or less... who cares, just don't clip.
@imamusicmogul3 жыл бұрын
Sorry but the mastering engineers accepting those mixes just in it for the money and they not doing the best job they can do and from the sounds of it are compressing your music like crazy to boost the levels which is not right. Also don’t forget you loose headroom when you dither tracks if your sending out 24 48 songs. The more headroom you give the mastering engineer the better job they will do and the better your song will sound.

@Daphatmack3 жыл бұрын
Wait what no bus sends for mixes? So you can level each sections after you mixed them. An why -12dbs through the vst? Does it offer a better effect? Because I try n keep my kick at -5dbs an 808 -8dbs/-10dbs An why Not -18dbs? An have u ever just tried using the gain plugin for gain staging and leveling? I thought everything thing in the mix has it’s own preferable industry levels such as: [kick-5dbs, bass-10dbs, snare-12dbs, lead mldy-9dbs] letting all other instruments fall to -18dbs or be lower. Then once everything is level group bus sections (instruments, percussion, fxs, kicks, bass) to auxiliary tracks an re-level and eq if needed. Am I doing the most or is that not how you get a industry standard mix🤔
@pegasusbeats10953 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same but does it actually make sense to mix based on “industry standards”? Doesn’t everything stand out on each track differently
@Daphatmack3 жыл бұрын
@@pegasusbeats1095 I thought the perpus was to get as clean as possible of a mix, regardless if you doing it for placements. A clean mix offers a better track to display an inspires a purchase of a multi track.... presumably of course🤔🤣😂

I think it would be very important to point out that you should cut 20-30 hz only using a linear phase eq. If you use a normal eq (without a linear phase setting) you might get some phase issues
@MichaelStelz3 жыл бұрын
Jesus... this is the worst mixing tipp I have ever read online. There's nothing worse than using Linear Phase for low cut. The pre-ringing in the sub frequencies is awful and probably you don't even have a monitoring system or treated room that makes it audible for you.
@ИванБорзых-е9п3 жыл бұрын
@@MichaelStelz I don't even cut sub frequencies tbh, just thought this tip would be helpful. Do you mean that you shouldn't make sub frequency cuts at all, or that you shouldn't use linear phase eq for it?
@MichaelStelz3 жыл бұрын
@@ИванБорзых-е9п First: There is no scenario where a low cut filter with a Linear Phase EQ makes sense. It just causes problems. Also if you think about how a subwoofer works physically, it gets very clear that pre-ringing destroys timing and transients. Second: Of course you can cut unnecessary low end information from your tracks, but personally I would never do it on the complete mix if I have access to the single tracks. Also consider trying low shelf cuts instead of high pass filter to get smoother results in some cases.

Good video Adam, but I'd be careful with how much you're cutting your hihats. I'd also explore the idea to phase invert your kick, it doesn't sound very punchy with the 808 in this instance. Maybe that will align them properly?
@MichaelStelz3 жыл бұрын
The phase shift of a normal EQ depends on the type of filter you are using, but usually the phase rotation is about maximum 90 degrees, never 180. Our ears are used to this since this is like it always has been in audio processing. I also said something similar in another comment under this video and I have no idea where all this wrong information comes from, but using Linear Phase to cut lows is absolutely the worst. The pre-ringing filter design destroys timing and transients, which sucks out the life of your tracks. Linear Phase is a very specific tool and for most of the time you don't really need it.
@mattshalash3 жыл бұрын
@@MichaelStelz Thank you for educating me on this. I must've read that somewhere unreliable. Could you please explore a little more how specifically it might impact the kick/808 balance. Perhaps it's because I've started using better tools, but i have the feeling my mixes are translating better and are more punchy recently (which is also arou d when I started using Linear eqs on lows) not saying it's correlated, but I'd like to understand some more. Thank you nonetheless, I'll correct my comment above, so i don't miseducated anyone reading it by accident
@ikeaman72473 жыл бұрын
@@MichaelStelz how should you cut your low end then
@imamusicmogul3 жыл бұрын
It really comes down to how you want you hats or whatever to sound like. And for the kick. I wouldn’t waste too much time. If it’s not punchy and eq not helping then it’s not the right kick to use for the track or with the 808. I’ll double look at this kick as sometimes I do change out the samples as well later on after a listening break
@MichaelStelz3 жыл бұрын
@@ikeaman7247 Use your normal zero latency EQ and work with a Q between 12db/oct - 24db/oct. I wouldn't recommend using 48db/oct filters like shown in this video. It is really not needed unless you have to solve some heavy issues. But in general the sound of steep filters is just cutting off the balls of any signal.

I use both FL Studio and Logic but I mix and master on logic. So should I be gain staging my sounds in FL before bouncing the audio and mixing on logic or can I gain stage once I have the wav files in logic? I hope that’s not confusing hahaha
@imamusicmogul3 жыл бұрын
It depends. Of the audio is clipping in fl then make sure you bounce clean tracks. But otherwise it can be done in logic as well. once the distortion is printed on a tracks it’s kind of hard to get rid of it later.
@L33M_03 жыл бұрын
Is using the gain plugin the same as this technique?
@mattshalash3 жыл бұрын
Kind of. It's always better to change the level of the sound at the source (that means in alchemy or Q-sampler, etc), that way you make sure the signal path is as clean as it possibly can be. Don't know how much of a difference it makes in the digital realm with software instruments, but either way it's one less plugin in the chain.

QUESTION: Other than gain staging, leveling your tracks, and doing basic eq work (mainly cleaning up the low end), I don't see you doing much more to your tracks. Is this what you do on all your tracks that you send out to artists for placement? Does this mixing approach differ from that of mixing a complete song with vocals vs just a beat to send out for placement?
@imamusicmogul3 жыл бұрын
It’s pretty much the same from track to track. It just may change what the focus of the track is. There would be compression stuff if I had vocals or live recordings. If there were vocals that would definitely take up its own space and I’d cut out or space out my instruments more. Mixing is really a dynamics balancing act. Things need to have its own spot to live in frequency spectrum. Think of it as lego where every block is a frequency band. And everything will come together if you have all the pieces in the right place. Hope that makes sense
