Some updates or clarifications: 1) The DTS:X mix is not available YET on Disney+. However, DTS and Disney plan to have DTS:X available to stream within the next 6 months. 2) I misspoke in the video when I said Infinity War and Endgame were the only two movies shot entirely in IMAX digital. Shang Chi and The Suicide Squad were also shot entirely in IMAX digital. 3) If you stream from an Apple TV device you will not be getting the DTS audio mix regardless. Apple does not pay for the license fee for DTS. Behind the scenes, many of the audio technicians and engineers at Apple previously worked at Dolby Labs and of course they don't want their former competition streaming from their device if it can be helped.

What about bitrate? We watched the IMAX Enhanced version of "Doctor Strange" on Disney+ this past weekend, and I swear the picture seemed to have a bit more detail than the standard Widescreen version, which I chalked up to maybe having less compression or higher bitrate. So I was surprised to not hear that come up in this video. Maybe placebo effect?
@FelicianoKevin3 жыл бұрын
I want to know this answer!
@MovieUniversity3 жыл бұрын
Definitely the placebo effect. This is not uncommon. A lot of people will also say the DTS-MA sound track will sound better than the Dolby True HD mix but they're both lossless sound tracks and the file sizes is the same, it's just the prestige of DTS makes people think it sounds better in that instance. Bitrates are the same for both formats on Disney+. A reddit user took screenshots of this recently. www.reddit.com/r/DisneyPlus/comments/qry03u/bitrate_of_imax_enhanced_movies/ What might have happened is the internet connection where you live. Depending on where you live and the time you're streaming something there might have been less bandwidth for the regular version to buffer. Happens a lot to people living in apartments or in the suburbs.

It is superior because it is a unique master, with Imax colour grading. The visual differences from the mass-theatrical versions aren't *just* the aspect ratio. Basically, It's all a marketing scheme where IMAX reserves exclusive rights to the fullest content that can fit in standard 16:9 format that studios distribute in order to inflate costs for consumers for a more exclusive experience.
@MovieUniversity3 жыл бұрын
Marketing, yes. Nefarious scheme? No. It’s about the camera sensor size in imax cameras. Watch the video I made on how aspect ratios work in the description.
@AsadNazif3 жыл бұрын
Yeap. Sensor size is one. But another thing is you have to remember, IMAX design their screens to sit nearer to the screen to fill your peripheral vision. So the story is still meant (in IMAX’s perspective) to be told in anamorphic, but the extra screen real estate fills your peripheral vision as if there’s no end to your eyes and feels larger. The extra real estate wasn’t exactly use for story telling (although some filmmakers have taken advantage of that). From the years after filmmakers have used the the extra real estate for more than just peripheral vision, IMAX enhanced on consumer level is just giving ppl whatever fully was shot. But I do agree that it’s not meant to be the way normal IMAX is and my own opinion, IMAX is reducing is quality of name by doing it with Disney although it helps bring the brand more known.
@armpauloferreira3 жыл бұрын
For me it has other perspective. Movies are really awesome in cinema with an 2,35:1 aspect ratio and when something is made just 16:9 it looks not very cinematic. Nowadays we live in a streaming era, which is something even more serious than just watch tv channels. So in a streaming service a movie made in pure 16:9 aspect ratio does not look so cinematic but 2,35:1 is starting to feel too much wide for all rigid 16:9 home screens. If TV has to evolve 18:9 would be a way (and not so far wide from everything) In my opinion, for streaming 2,0:1 would have been the best of both worlds but then it does not come as a standard branded like the prestige of IMAX. For me IMAX enhanced is just a clever new way to standardize a proper aspect ratio for streaming services which is 1,9:1 (one that still looks cinematic and fills much more a home screen) and clearly supported by cinemas too. I hope that Disney + and more streaming services bring this aspect ratio to their offer. Looks great!

It also helps a lot with smartphones too since they're close to 18:9. So media in aspect ratios close to that would be great for almost all devices

It's still a compressed as hell video stream, doesn't matter what the marketing said.
@MovieUniversity3 жыл бұрын
almost all video streamed is compressed because of internet speed limits with today's technology. not sure what you expect.
@interdimensionalsteve81723 жыл бұрын
uh huh, which is why 4k blu rays are still the way to go.
@MovieUniversity3 жыл бұрын
No one is arguing that fact. On my channel I have advocated for people to continue to buy physical media quite a few times. However, the reality is that many more people stream movies than buy physical today.

You wouldn't be able to tell the difference if it was a 4K disc or stream.

4k ultra HD is soooo much better sure you get more picture but the color and lighting is faded looking. Too much godamn blooming on home screens and HDR is gold colored trash. DOLBY vision gives it a vivid color and on oled screens the blacks contrast with light beautifully. I don't like this update on Disney plus. The dolby vision stuff is miles better

Interesting viewpoint. Thanks

Couldn’t disagree more. I did a direct comparison yesterday with DV on the ATV4K(the ATV4K forces DV on IMAX enhanced D+) and IMAX enhanced on the Sony A90J internal app. It was the Sony app with IMAX enhanced that looked sharper and more vibrant. DV by comparison was muted and looked extremely faded. The difference was jarring to say the least.

Disney plus just updated their shit and they brought back that dolby ultra HD. So u can relax ur tits.

Uhhh...listening to him talk about his IMAX tech to me sounds like a bunch of BS lol. It feels to me that this Marvel IMAX enhanced is BS lol! Maybe some clearer imagery but nothing to run home and tell mommy about. Smh.

Movie companies need to make their movies to work with home oled screens and remove the annoying crap black bars from blu rays because cinemas are dead to me. I won’t pay their prices and horrible food and if they keep making political statements and make me hate their actors I’ll not only stop buying their movies in cinemas I’ll go back to pirating their blu rays until they learn their lessons. They ruined the MCU and Star Wars and I’ve not bought a BR for 2 years. I just got an 83inch oled so they need to wake up because every I know hates the American left wing film industry more than ever and I’m not even from America

You need imax enhanced reciever as well to enjoy this tech or it will work just fine with imax enhanced tv and normal denon Dolby Atmos set up

Just watched Doctor Strange Multiverse, imax enhanced, fills the full screen and the color and quality is far superior to the Uhd 4k I normal watch on Netflix, the quality is maybe too good and you can see every spot and blimp on the actors face.
