The entire movie is in DCI full container, so depending on what your IMAX theatre's screen aspect ratio is, it will probably be completely filled throughout the movie. Prasads imax located in Hyderabad was the largest 3d imax screen when it launched and was second largest till it was no longer called the imax. The transition from film to laser didn't go well in the sense that the laser projectors were creating letterboxing and my understanding is that it never converted to imax digital. The days in which it flourished it was magnificent. I've seen movies shot in imax film, iconic movies such as the dark knight, the dark knight rises and the interstellar.People travelled from far away cities just to watch the dark knight rises in the prasads imax since Nolan used imax film camera for select scenes and there was no other theatre in the entire country (India) which had imax film projectors. The experience is out of the world and i've not come close to something like it. Spider man 3, Harry potter, Baahubali 1 & 2 (though imax branding was dropped at that point) were some of the immersive cinematic worlds i've travelled into in that theatre. The bank robbery, sky hook, the dark knight, the plane crash, the rise, docking scene which filled the screen and made me experience like I was right in it.

An IMAX screen isn’t just big. It’s also closer to the audience and is slightly curved instead of being flat so the movie fills your field of vision better
@MovieUniversity4 жыл бұрын
The screens are closer to you because they reduce leg room which I do mention in both of my IMAX videos. They’ve done this to a) cram more seats into an auditorium, b) it give the illusion of a bigger screen all while adding discomfort to their patrons. Their curved screens are mentioned in my last IMAX video but I don’t buy the “immersion” factor they claim. Much like curved computer monitors or TVs and the companies who make them claiming immersion, this is not possible with only viewing an object in from of you. This is why PC games like Battlefield allow triple screen set ups to give a true wrap field of view offering a real sense of immersion. Movies shown in the Screen X format help in immersive feels.

@davidtich2 жыл бұрын
I work in post sound. IMAX's statement that the audio teams create a "special IMAX mix" is only partially true. What actually happens is that we do the mix, over weeks or months, in native Atmos or 7.1. Then once the mix is completed, we have only 1-2 days to adapt THAT mix to IMAX. This only gives us time to apply broad strokes changes to the mix, and doesn't let us get into the nitty gritty. Depending on the mixers and the nature of the content, some of these mixes do translate well, however often they translate as being very boomy/bass-heavy due to the extended low end. Perhaps if there was more time to craft the IMAX mix, I would be more of a fan myself, but I almost always prefer the native Atmos mix.

Watched "Top Gun: Maverick" 3 times in theater First two were in IMAX with my kids, 3rd time was with the wife after IMAX showings had stopped. 1. visual clarity is noticable between the 2 formats, but actually a hindrance when looking at the 'flashback' sequences where Maverick is remembering Goose's death. I thought the older footage actually looked better on the standard screen. They looked grainy and weird on the IMAX screen. Must be something in the translation between the formats. 2. IMHO the reason to see this in IMAX has way more to do with the sound quality. The jets RUMBLE THROUGH YOUR CHEST in IMAX. On the regular screen they are simply 'loud'. While yes the visual quality is better, it's a small difference and I'm not sure this adds to the film. Yes the audio is better, but the audio doesn't require a better camera, merely better sound in the given theater. So, until they put top shelf sound in every auditorium, I still think IMAX is worth the extra money.

You have to understand that "more power" for the sound system doesn't mean it's going to make your ears bleeding. The thing is that you need way more power to produce those low frequencies which will not be experienced as "too loud" but more impressive (literally). I watched Top Gun in the biggest IMAX there is and it was _not_ too loud but incredible earth shaking especially in the scenes where they show afterburners and such. To be clear, it was the best audio experience I ever had. I'm very happy that IMAX is in control of the volume. Many times (especially in smaller theaters) it was actually too loud, the sound system couldn't handle it and it was awful. But in an IMAX (and I didn't know they are in control of that) it's always perfect. The loudest parts are really on the edge of what is still pleasant but also super impressive.

Yeah, my experience with IMAX sound is that it is usually just a touch too loud. The screen is great but the deafening audio is not better. I also think that for IMAX to flourish they need to encourage or enforce home media production to use taller aspect ratios when displaying IMAX content at home, such as on Bluray disc. Many movies shot in IMAX crop the video display to 2.39:1 which may match the rest of the movie, or what was shown in theaters, but it doesn't allow you to really appreciate the use of IMAX at all which is incredibly stupid and lame.

I live in Sheffield in the UK and the Cineworld here has a great IMAX screen. I think it's the 6th largest screen in the UK at around 23Mx12M and was only the 2nd to have IMAX with laser installed. Once that laser projection was added there was a noticeable improvement in visual clarity. But in terms of the audio, I agree with the video that sometimes it is just too loud. I saw John Wick 4 in the IMAX recently and the opening scene where he's punching the wooden dummy was deafening (and went on for ages lol)

The resolution of a 70 mm film can be likened to a digital 12K. The Arri or the Sony Venice can film at 4K or 6K, but the resolution in the theater (all Disney movies certainly) will be no more than 2K; therefore the 4K resolution of an home DVD player is higher than the resolution in the movie theatre. But... The DVD image is a simply upscaled image. And the quality of the vision doesn't come from resolution, but from the colour and the postprocessing. The IMAX film cameras and projectors are a legend. Thanks for the video...

I guess that the special thing about IMAX really is the format of the screen. The format fills your whole field of vision, both horizontally and vertically, I was amazed how close it was to my own limits of my peripheral vision. Just the whole perception is the movie itself. And then the size and distance to the screen. Because the rooms are so large, you get a better viewing experience. Especially with 3D, it's all about the distance to the screen, because it's so much better and less stressful to your eyes when the screen is farther away and also fills more of your vision, than if only a small horizontal strip is the movie and it's so close that your eyes really have to work to see the 3D movie without having blurry pictures. And also without 3D, it just feels better. So I guess, it doesn't have to be IMAX. But it needs to be a big screen that's far enough away.

6:40 When you cut down 1GB+ per second RGB film scans normally saved in CDNG/DPX to Intermediate codecs and eventually get down to final mastering TB's of footage gets condensed down to a measly 100/128GB BDXL disk the scope of data loss is amazing not only in bitrate, but going from 16-bit colour to 10-bit 4:2:0 for HDR BluRay, Film Kit costs nothing, developing & scanning that in one run correctly and consistently that's where the costs cut deep, It's a shame we live in an age where the capture mediums quality potential far exceeds the consumer's distribution medium and only those who edit the original footage will ever see the fully potential of it.

I saw Top Gun: Maverick this week at an IMAX theater in Osaka, Japan (possibly even the facility whose wall is shown at 11:18). The only reason was because they weren't showing the subtitled version (as opposed to dubbed) in normal theaters at the time of day I wanted to go. The volume wasn't as bad as Dunkirk (the only other movie I've seen in that theater, which gave me a massive headache), but it was still louder than I think it needed to be. That said, I do like the deep sub-bass - the rumble in my chest does add to the experience. The screen was probably better and a little bigger, but not dramatically so. I think the only "real" IMAX theater I've experienced was in a science museum, not a cinema multiplex. As for price, it wasn't bad. The standard price for movies in Japan is ¥1,800 (about $15), and it's lowered to ¥1,200 for me as a senior (and for everyone on certain discount days). IMAX adds ¥500 (about $4) on top of that, which is not unreasonable. At the same cinema there is an MX4D theater, and it's insane, adding ¥1,800 on top of the base price! (I've never tried it - I can't imagine it being worth over double the price!)

I was in Osaka last year during Thanksgiving and saw the first Harry Potter movie. . . subtitled unfortunately.

@@MovieUniversity Cool that you were here - I hope you enjoyed your visit! First Harry Potter was in a theater in 2021? Interesting - I wonder if that theater was running through the whole series over time. Why do you consider it unfortunate that it was subtitled? In Japan, the only other choice is overdubbed (Japanese voice actors instead of the original dialogue). Even on Netflix you can't turn it off completely - subs or dubs are your choices. If you live here, you get used to ignoring subtitles, and occasionally it's even helpful if I didn't catch something that was said in English (I can read Japanese, but not full speed - once I tried to watch a Finnish movie with Japanese subtitles!).

If the primary distribution of a movie is framed for 2.39 (most every movie), then opening up the frame to 1.9 or 1.43 does nothing to change the framing of the shot... which can be seen as too much headroom for shots with people in them. It was not the director's original intent, usually looks unnatural, and doesn't necessarily improve the impression of the movie except in dramatic action scenes with lots of wide shots. Don't automatically assume that just because you "see" more image that this means you are getting a better movie experience. If you are watching an IMAX movie and the aspect ratio keeps changing... be thankful.

I wish we could say a fond farewell to 70 mm just on the basis of the expense and bulk alone. Overwhelming advances in film technology resolution gave us the likes of Star Wars A New Hope and Bladerunner, now we depend on digital sensor. This now of course this too has the potential of being as good as standard 35 mm in 16.9:1 aspect ratio or just broach any 15 perf standard, with slickly grainless results.

In the Philippines we have only one theater that's 1570+D, it was the first IMAX in the country back in 2006 and it's also still the biggest screen in the country at 72 x 96 feet. I don't think they use film anymore though. I watched Alita Battle Angel, Avengers Endgame, and Rise of Skywalker there. My most recent IMAX viewings have been in an IMAX with Laser (only one in the country), that's much closer than the other one but the tickets are twice the price. The actual theater itself is much better though so that kind of makes up for the higher price.
