Dontai asked how scientists know that the universe is expanding. Fair warning: This is gonna be long and “nerdy”. I learned it in Physics. Apparently, when an object is moving away from you, it produces red light (called redshift), and when an object is moving towards you, it produces blue light (called blueshift). Both of these things aren’t visible to the human eye, just detectable by wavelengths. Astronomers have applied this concept to space and have found out that everything in space is producing redshift, meaning all the other stars and galaxies in space are moving away from Earth. This is also how physicists theorize that the universe started with The Big Bang, since if everything is currently moving away from each other, they must’ve started from a single point. Meaning one day in the future, people on Earth won’t be able to see any stars in the sky since they’ll be so far away.

basically, there's something thats fucking up known equations and these theories were brought up to make sense of what we dont currently know, mainly focusing around dark energy. the "x" in the equation is currently unknown is suggested to be dark energy. also our brains can't comprehend infinity so we're probably never gonna figure it out.

The reason they know it’s accelerating is that they can determine new astronomic bodies by how planets and preexisting move as it would be different if a new geavitional force is added. For example if a new planet was added to our solar system that had a decently strong gravity, it would affect the rotation of all planets in our solar system. We can also see the solar system is as with a growing space, dark matter and dark energy are formed, we can tell how much dark matter and energy there is by working out if there is matter that is producing a gravitational pull, if there’s isn’t but there must be one. It’s dark matter. So usually that to map out and compare matter to dark matter to dark energy, we can tell that space is growing faster. If you imagine a grenade blast, when the grenade sets off, the explosion is slight but then accelerates once the gunpowder kicks in but then slows down once it breaks through the spellings and is exposed to air. Space is the grenade and is still in the grenade casing so it is still accelerating until it’s hit the breach point for it to then slow down.
