Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.bbtv.com/collections/forg...
Adopted in 1983, the “Galatz” (a contraction of the Hebrew for Galil Sniper) is a DMR based on the 7.62x51mm Galil action. It was fitted with a 23” heavy barrel, rear-m mounted bipod, folding stock, cheek riser, and a Nimrod 6x40 scope in a detachable mount offset to the left of the action. Only a very small number came into the US commercially before importation was banned in the late 1980s.

Galatz = Galil + Tzalaf (sniper) I've used one in training. The accuracy, even on the battered and neglected training rifle is very useful. Can hit man-sized targets in the critical area up to 300m. Actually feels more accurate than an M16, although I never tried both with the same scope and same level of ammo quality. It isn't a tool designed to split hairs; more of a combat situation, where lots of bullets will be flying around both ways

The heavy weight is a good thing for marksman purposes. It sucks from a tactical standpoint, but that's only a problem for people who're actually at war. The rest of us just hump it in the car and go to the range and enjoy being able to fire 500 rounds in a practice session and still have a functional shoulder the day after :P Also, a 4x scope for 1.5-2 minute of angle is, imho, plenty for everyone who isn't an army trained sniper. Sure, at every gun range you'll find the chubby guy in the cammo pants, who never did service, insisting that mounting the Hubble Telescope on a battered surplus rifle is the right thing to do... but... we try not to laugh :P

@andersjjensen
@andersjjensen 3 жыл бұрын
@@jankaas4504 Strictly speaking it's a designated marksman rifle and not a sniper rifle. Effective fire out to 700-800 meters is what you can realistically expect. 4x power is plenty for that.

@@andersjjensen i get that, but you point all of the points as if it is intended as a range toy, which it isnt. It is a dmr/sniper/counter sniper rifle intended for military aplications. Im sorry that i bring it up and in Holland we would say im ant fucking now.
@andersjjensen
@andersjjensen 3 жыл бұрын
@@jankaas4504 My remarks were in the context of this particular example being a semi-auto only version being auctioned to the general public. I'd personally like to own this rifle for range use, but I wouldn't want to carry it to battle. Because it is heavy AF and outdated by modern standards. It was fine at it's introduction in '89 though, but nothing special. The Swedish variant of the G3 with picotini rail would be a lot better rounded DMR for instance.

I am curious about the DMR designation. I served in the Yamam, the anti-terrorist unit of the Israeli Border Guard from '86 to '88, and one of the sniper rifles we used was the Galil Tsalafim presented here. Generally, hostage rescue sniping takes place at shorter ranges than general combat sniping ("ballistic advantage" is not typically exploited in such scenarios) but we still thought of it as a sniper weapon. I describe one of our operations in this article: www.timesofisrael.com/when-shots-rang-out-again-we-knew-we-had-to-storm-the-bus/

I am familiar with the M1A / M14 because that was my service rifle in the fleet and as an MP . I didn't know atthe time that the IDF used Nimrods on M14s as DMRs. My Nimrod is now mounted to my Bergara B14 Ridge chambered in .308 Win . I have to make some handloads before testing the rig at the range . The guys at the shop that sold me were impressed by my Nimrod , had never seen one before . Shalom !

Regarding the Nimrod scope, Nimrod was a person mentioned in a single verse in the Book of Genesis as a great hunter. In a Bugs Bunny cartoon, BB referred to Elmer Fudd as a "great Nimrod" sarcastically. The audience, unfamiliar with the Biblical figure but knowing that EF was an idiot, thought that "Nimrod" meant "idiot." The meaning stuck, and now many more people know Nimrod by the new definition rather than the original meaning.

Mounting the bipod that far back also means you can get away with shorter legs. LMGs often have longer legs mounted farther out to avoid rocking with recoil. If you're floating the barrel, it's also lighter to mount them on the frame than adding a pier for the bipod to extend on. Not that they seem overly concerned with keeping the weight down here with the 2x4 furniture.

@@yuvalbeery2493 dagnabbit, my bad (lol!). I should read better. I thought you meant that in general, the Galil platform is still being used by the Israeli Parliament Guard. So I asked you specifically which version. Seeing your comment again I now see that you specifically said the Galatz version was the one being used. So my reply is rather silly. 😅

@@yuvalbeery2493 and btw, the Galatz is still made and sold by IWI, now with more modern furniture. The Philippines' Police and Coast Guard for instance, use this updated version.

In 1984 I attended an armourers course on the Galil, UZI & Desert Eagle family of smallarms. We were instructed by none other than the designers if the Galil, Yisrael Galil and Yacov Lior. The Galil sniper was part of the course... my opinion was that it was not terribly accurate and as heavy and awkward as using a MAG58 as a sniper rifle! Strangely we sold around 12 in the UK before all semiauto rifles were banned!

It's rare that I find Ian using a word in the wrong way, but Ian, you used cantilever wrong. Canting isn't short hand for cantilevering, canting is offsetting something to one side, whereas cantilevering is using counterweights to support an overhanging structure, i.e. a lot of Frank L. Wright's homes, Falling Water comes to mind. I love the video, i just hope this finds you before someone corrects you in person, i feel like this is less awkward

The book from SOF Magazine /Sniping from Paladin press writes much about the Israeli snipers og system used. Author suggestes use the Galatz with a Art 6-18x as making the Galatz more suited for various scenarios and tips and tricks to enhance the system to be more accurate.
