She's using the wrong grip on her serve. A good coach would've picked up on that error in an instant.

It’s not the wrong grip. A good coach wouldn’t put her in the continental grip before she has developed a coordinated throwing motion. Watch my latest video.

@@TomAllsopp There's no point re-inforcing a forehand grip on the serve. It's just going to build into her muscle memory, create bad habits and take longer to correct.

@@ANa-ln2xp such a ridiculous way of thinking about how progress works. Continental grip at her stage of learning would make it far more difficult to develop a coordinated motion, and more importantly play the game of tennis to the beat of her ability. Blows my mind that people don’t understand this.

@@TomAllsopp I don't know any elite tennis coach teaching a beginner to use a forehand grip on their serve. Being called out on this error and continuing this charade, that's even more ridiculous. Just take the L and use the feedback to improve your teaching skills or don't.

@@TomAllsopp whats hilarious to me is the notion that you never clocked "the wrong grip". I remember being a young coach and striving for idealogical purity. That lasted all of a month! It was only when i started exploring the forehand grip serve myself that i realised that it wasnt that bad if you have good fundamentals. in fact i could get a lot of functionality out of it

Tremendous progress in one short lesson. I'll be using this trick. Love that even with that grip you got her swinging smoothly and hitting decent serves. Excellent job Coach

Tom as a coach I really like how you use progressions rather then “let’s learn a perfect serve right away.” I have certainly been guilty in the past of trying to get beginners to do great technique too early. The tube looks like a great feel drill btw

Thank you! I am a big believer in incremental adjustment. I'm about to publish my book on this subject, and many others.

Trained as a physical education teacher, the concepts and practice of progressions,(part vs whole), especially with beginners is the foundation of effective learning. Most KZbin tennis instructors use analogies and progressions. Many if not most local tennis pro instructors use the “do it like this” method which is much less effective with discouraging results and is expensive.

What a remarkable technique to transform the frying pan serve! (FPS) Until now I’d no idea how my daughter would kiss the FPS g’bye. Was making baby steps over 2 ninety minute sessions teaching a kick serve progression: grip change, swing path, string angle, high arc ball path, etc. She left town, but I’ll share this video to her! Thanks a million!

Very nice tennis service drill. It will definitely help to pick up the right service motion. BTW what is the length of the ball picker you were using for this drill?.

Might be a surprise for some but having a weak upper body strength can help to learn tennis better. My kids learn tennis in 2 months better than I did in 5 years. They rely on hip rotation to throw the racket around.
