Immersed - Should I buy a Quest 3?

Meta recently released their next generation consumer grade headset: the Quest 3. After using the headset for about a month, I share my thoughts about what it's like to use this device specifically in Immersed for productive work in VR. At the end of the video, I share my suggestions on whether or not you should buy one.

"I don't understand why they don't invest more time and effort into producing a headstrap that will make using the product more comfortable". They do. It's sold separately. This is their business model, they sell the headset at a loss, and then recoup some of that loss through sales of massively overpriced accessories. While I also wish it would come with a better strap, at the end of the day I'd rather pay less for the headset and get the accessories I want from 3rd parties than pay more for included accessories I'd probably end up payig to replace anyway.

I've been getting more and more used to work/code/design in VR for the past month and taking the time to adjust myself to the changes it requires (taking breaks, eye exercises, etc), let's see how that continues to go. I have a Quest 3 and a subscription to Immersed. I have one issue that's been a bit of a problem. I use it sitting on my couch while I work. If I take the headset off (like going to the restroom, etc) when I put it back on all my screens and portals are all much lower and not in the same place they were before. It's almost like I set them up while sitting down, and then stood up. Except I'm not. So I have to set them up again to get them back in a usable location. Any idea if there's a setting or something I need to change that can prevent this? I found this video as I was searching for a fix for this but haven't found one yet. I used to have a Quest 1 with Immersed, but it wasn't useable at the time for me. Pass thru wasn't good, and screen door effect was too pronounced. When I got my Quest 3, I felt it was finally ready for prime time. As long as I can get this workspace setup issue fixed, I'll likely use it most of the time.

Dave, thanks for the great comparative review and sharing your insights and recommendations on Quest 3, Pro and 2. I'll be investing in a Quest 3 to replace my Q2 early next year. Professionals that work in Immersed VR will be watching the Immersed Visor VR glasses later in 2024, which should be the next generational step for hardware and working in VR for extended periods of time. Did you run into any issues with keeping the Quest 3 charged while using immersed? I've tried many different cables and chargers while using tethered and my battery still drains in a couple hours

Thanks! I'm glad this video was helpful for you! It's a great idea to elaborate on the screen door effect (or "SDE" as many of us call it). When you get into this stuff and start learning about it, over time, it becomes second nature and you get to a point where you don't know what other people don't know. My apologies for not explaining that more thoroughly. That would actually make a great topic for a stand-alone video! 🤔 But anyway... SDE arises because the resolution of HMD's is not yet high enough to match the visual acuity of the human eye. Tiny gaps of darkness around each pixel creates a lattice work of dark (or less bright) lines over an image. The net effect of this is nearly identical to what it looks like when you look through a screen door or window. Future improvements in headsets will undoubtedly make the screen door affect imperceptible, but we are not quite there yet.

The best comfort mod for Quest Pro I've found was the VRPanda halo mod. For Quest 3 I'm happy with the BoboVR M3 head strap, though I'm still waiting for someone to make a better facial interface.

Wow, great video You explained things very well. Being a DevOps guys, I'd love to work like this. I have a question about reading glasses, as I gotten old I found I need reading glasses for my monitors, but not for the TV since its further away. Can you set the "virtual screen distance" at a distance that you would not need reading glasses ? Also, how is watching movies or KZbin it this type of set up?

VR is very interesting in the fact that *everything* you see is actually projected on a focal plane that is approximately 4 ft away from you. So, in VR, whether you look at a virtual watch on your wrist, or a virtual mountain miles away, you are *always* actually focusing your eyes approximately 4 ft away. For this reason, reading glasses are terrible for VR. They would only make your vision worse, even if you were looking at a screen in Immersed close to your face. So if you do not need glasses in real life to clearly see things 4 ft away, then you do not need glasses in VR. If you do need glasses to see clearly, detailed stuff like text at a distance of 4 ft, then glasses in VR will help you. However, if you have to have glasses in VR, I highly, highly, highly recommend getting prescription inserts. Physical glasses inside a headset are horribly uncomfortable. Prescription inserts are the only way to go for comfortable viewing over long periods of time in VR. Check out reloptix.com/

I have the Quest Pro and Quest 3... the Quest 3 is my favorite for working all day in. Once I added a BovoVR M2 headset... I removed the face gasket and it is pretty much the same form factor/comfort as the pro. For work I don't need the face/eye tracking (yet) so it is Quest 3 for me. Hopefully they will release the next quest with that added back in (especially with the popularity of the gaze control systems in apple vision pro). Great video! Subscribed.

@@WorkInVR I actually was going to get that one but it was backordered for like 4 months... so I went with the existing one. It seems to be working fine so far. I also got it with the dual battery/charger system they have. You can't make it all day but it works great up to lunch where I leave both charging and then do it all again. You can pretty much make it all day using it that way. I looked into the VISOR you mentioned at the end of the video as well... I may actually go for that as well. That form factor looks amazing. Going to be an interesting year for spatial computing. :)

Have you tried any other headsets with Immersed? Or is it that Immersed is only supported on the quest & pico headsets right? Too bad they don't have an app available for PC VR as that makes way more sense to work in than stand-a-lone since you need your PC anyways. Have you ever tried Teams Immersion/Microsoft Mesh? How does that compare to Immersed? 1 feature that I think is good is that with Teams Immersed (I haven't tried since I use linux and its not available on my platform) is that flat screen users can join a meeting. The vast majority of remote workers won't be using VR so I think that is a good move by M$ to include those users (M$ is leaving out Mac & Linux users atm).

Hi there -- I've used Immersed with the Quest 2, Quest Pro and the Quest 3. Immersed also works with the HTC Vive Focus 3 and Pico 4. I have not tried Teams Immersion/Microsoft Mesh. Some people who have said that Immersed is still a much better experience. You are correct that flat screen users cannot join Immersed. Horizon Workrooms has a solution for that. In Immersed, I just use Zoom and use the Immersed Webcam so other meeting participants see my avatar. But there is nothing like collaborating with all participants are using Immersed in a collaboration room. The sense of presence for that is amazing!

Ordered My quest 3 yesterday before watching this, and this made me so glad to hear and learn about your review. I plan on using it 90% for Immersed and 10% for games. It may be a little awkward at work (I'm in a role that requires physical presence in the office), but I plan on putting a sticker on the front that says "Gear 5" which our office staff knows means focused attention on project work without interruptions. If this experiment goes well and I can replace my monitor with this headset, I may revisit the Visor after they are in the wild with independent reviews. I really wish I had facial tracking, but I've benefited from hundreds of hours of immersed on my son's Quest 2 so I imagine I'll get over it until I start co-working with a bunch of people that have facial tracking. Overall, this video was incredibly helpful for me, and I appreciate the time and attention you poured into it.

That is fantastic! Definitely let us know how it goes using it in the office. We are early adopters, but over time, as the devices get better and cheaper, they will eventually become ubiquitous. "Ron_noobtastic", one of the Immersed regulars who works for Microsoft, regularly uses his headset in the physical office. He said that it sparks interest in other people and now a few of his co-workers are using Immersed too! I'm so glad this video was helpful for you!

We’re in a busy season at work, so not many people have walked in while I was using it, but those that have I’ve let them see it and they seem more excited about it rather than finding it weird.

After watching numerous reviews however I think I’m going to purchase one for Christmas. I’m coming from a pico 4 so was unsure if the upgrade would be worth it but I think the lenses are going to be a bit better. I have the option of a Quest Pro or a Quest 3 at the same price, currently using a Quest 2. However, what's not clear to me is the need for passthrough when the Quest Pro does not block any light by default, isn't that enough to compensate for the lack of the more detailed passthrough of the Quest 3? I'm however not sure how much you can actually see with the Pro without the light blocker. Not able to return the Pro unfortunately when I buy it.

Interesting problem! Honestly, I would suggest going with the Q3. The text is a little sharper and the pass through is much better on the Q3. The only real advantage the QPro has over the Q3 is facial tracking. That is fun, but not the most important feature. Both headsets can have light blockers added or removed so that's a wash. For practical working in vr, I would take the slightly greater resolution and clearer passthrough of the Q3 over the QPro.

I am actually not planning on that headset for a few reasons. First of all, I'm not really much of an Apple guy. But that alone wouldn't stop me. Secondly, the price is going to be extremely high. I'm used to paying a lot for bleeding edge headsets, but that is going to be a really hard pill to swallow. But the biggest reason why I am likely not going to get an Apple Vision Pro, is that I have already pre-ordered my Founders Edition Visor from Immersed! 4K per eye resolution in a tiny, lightweight form factor that is optimized for productive work in vr? Yes, please!! 😁 I can't wait!

I can't speak to Xbox cloud gaming, but the 128 gig quest 3 is more than enough if immersed is your primary use for the device! That's the one I have and it works just great!

Previously, I've purchased two of these: a.co/d/94dzEeb However, I really only use them for power. I keep my headset plugged in and charging all day every day. However, upon the advice/recommendation of some friends in the Immersed public rooms, I recently purchased this cable: a.co/d/4d8EqV9 I also purchased this USB-C hub: a.co/d/51swed9 With this new hub and cable set up, I should be able to get power AND data to the headset so I can take advantage of Immersed in USB-C wired mode, while still staying plugged in and powered/charged to 100% all day long. Others have said this combo of hub and cable work great so I'm going to try it out!

I've been working in Immersed for several years at this point so they are definitely legit. That doesn't mean there won't be potential problems with the Visor. I certainly hope not! But, I agree! The lightweight Visor cannot possibly come soon enough!

Let me help you understand, why, Its because in order to ship them at the low cost that they did, so more people can now enter the vr space for under $1000, they cut corners on the strap so you could be able to afford it. They are actually loosing money on every single headset they sold, just to get the marketplace and build thier exp system to be more sustainable in the long run. Trust, they knew, it sucked fpr comfort, but they also knew, once people try it, that point is moot, because its easy to fix with third party solutions.

@@robskey You may certainly have whatever opinion you like. It's fine if we disagree. But "Trash headset" doesn't help anyone. What don't you like about it? What alternatives would you suggest to other people? Is there another headset in that price range that would be a good option for other people? I apologize for saying "Also not true." You are correct - that is your opinion and I can respect your opinion. But if you're going to leave a comment, make it useful to other people. "Trash headset" is just name calling with no helpful information.

@@WorkInVR l gona be honest resolution is not best batery not best 2hours no more via cable still batery going down strap is poor as well to sorted this hedset you need spend anather 200 pound....l return my after 2 days use l will stay witch my reverb g2 for now .. evry one is exited about hedset but is not perfect....
