My mom made the decision for me and my brother one summer to do volunteer work at a local Catholic food bank when we were teens. While the food bank thought we were volunteering out of the kindness of our hearts, my mom's intentions were to actually get free food boxes when picking us up at the end of the day. She had a full time job at the time, and we were financially stable, but that immigrant mentality of not having food really does stick with you if that was a struggle in the past.

My Polish millionaire aunt was on her death bed. She called us to come to the hospital because she wanted to give our family something. When we get there, there is a giant duffel bag next to her bed and she tells us to not open it until we get home. Now your probably thinking what I was thinking, it's gotta be filled with money right ? WRONG. It was filled with towels from the hospital.... 🤣 🤣. We laughed so hard. This lady also used to make us take extra condiment packets from restaurants and squeeze them into the bottles in her fridge. In the end she got scammed into signing a fake will by her Indian caretaker in Florida 2 weeks before her death, just after she left us a voice mail stating she was coming to Chicago to sign over everything to us . After 3 years in court, that dirty caretaker took all $1.6 million.

My dad is an immigrant. When I first became a ER nurse my Slovak grandparents immediately started asking me to grab things from the hospital whenever they needed certain medical supplies. One of the first things my grandpa ask me for was an ace bandage because of a blister on his hand. It's crazy because he could have went to the Walgreens around the corner and bought an ace bandage for like five bucks, but instead he would rather wait a couple days for when I worked again and bring it to him for free. Now every so often when I'm at work I will stand in the supply room and think "what supplies could they be asking for next" and grab whatever that thing is. I have a box at home dedicated to things that I grabbed from work in case my grandparents might need them sometime in the future
@ashleylala42932 жыл бұрын
Hey man, with the prices of things nowadays, that’s a smart move. I went to buy an Ace bandage the other day and when I saw they were damn near $20 at the drugstore I figured I would forget the bandage, toughen up and hope for the best 😂

My girlfriend is an immigrant from Taiwan, she’s got like a whole immigrant network of other Taiwanese people. And if she meets a new Taiwanese person and they find out that they went to the same elementary school, forget about it. They’re basically sisters, immediately. I gotta say though, I do like dealing with the Taiwanese network because their prices tend to be way more reasonable.

i have korean friends that are rich and even though they're not 1st gen immigrants, they still won't buy anything until they find the absolutely wildest low pricing. i have no idea how they find the deals, but they get things criminally cheap. i'd swear they were buying illegal stuff but they are very rules/laws oriented, they are just relentless in searching out deals and never ever buy until they find the absolute dirt cheap pricing.

It's not a stupid scheme it's a way to have a lifetime warranty on a product, that Wal-Mart/Target/Freddy's/etc makes more than enough off of each one. Also if you steal it straight up, it makes the products price go up since they pad the price for knowing they will have a percentage stolen.

Imagine it this way: An alien comes to earth and offers to take you to his paradise planet for 3 days, after which you must return home forever. He says all your needs will be taken care of and you can just relax. When you get there, you get into your room and realize there are gold nuggets and diamonds being used as ice cubes for the drinks and in the lobby every morning there are complimentary free-energy batteries for guests to take to charge their alien things. None of the aliens care about these things because they are super commonplace, but to you its unfathomable and you want to take as much as you can before its all out of reach forever. Thats resource poor mentality, and most of the world struggle every day to meet their basic needs and they pass that trauma down to their children who hold onto their whole lives, even if they eventually "make it" out of that resource poor life. Once that second generation has kids in the resource rich life, the parents seem insane to the kids because "why would mom steal bottled water and towels from the hotel? We have all that at home" when mom was conditioned from birth to never let a resource go unused, otherwise you might find yourself in desperate need of it and wish you had it. I know Tom and Christy are just shootin the shit for comedy on a comedy podcast, but its surprising how few people realize the cause of the "stingy klepto immigrant" stereotype.
