(Actually bigger than Canada's 😂) and so they had many cultural and familial ties to here, South Africa was very politically and economically stable at the time and actively encouraged European immigration which attracted many Portuguese (but specifically Madeirans looking for a better life). If you come to South Africa you'll see many people who manage and own grocery stores that sell fruit, vegetables, meats, etc. Are usually Portuguese. We even have our own festivals lol
