This is seriously one of the best albums I've come across in a long time. The combination of the music and the lyrics left a haunting impression in my mind that is evoked every time I go back and listen to it. The lyrics are pretty much a summary of the thoughts we have all had at one point and forced out of our heads in denial. Scary shit, but increasingly true...

After 30 years of being a death metal fanatic I have arrived to the conclusion that immolation is possibly the band with the most unique and brutal sound in death metal only they play with such technical proficiency and brutal ferocity more than any other death metal band they are jazz players that play death metal,I hate overly technical death metal but immolation do it in a way that doesn’t take away from their brutal sound but complements their intense ferocity! No one does it or can do it as immolation does it.

Any Immolation fan that doesn't like this should be ashamed of themselves. Immolation are growing as song writers, and the drumming is awesome. I tried to like it. Immolation is one of my favorite bands. Todays production values really don't help bands these days, other then to sound louder and more mechanical. Immolation are still awesome live and some of the nicest people in metal.

No bad attitude here, just being honest. I commend the production work on Dawn of Possession. Instead of going to Scott Burns like 95% of the bands at the time, Immolation went to Berlin, Germany to have a unique sound for their debut in 1991. The rich drum tone on the release is outstanding. Here in After has great dynamic range displaying dissonant chords and eerie solos which give the CD a dark atmosphere. Close to a World Below is an amazing landmark release for the band when their peaked!

A good mix/mastering achievement, is way better than older recording methods ever would and could achieve. It purely depends on the person behind the mastering, or what setup you use. I use speakers worth 3k euro myself for listening music, and good monitors, when it comes to my pro tools setup. I often hear people speak about sound, quality and so forth, withouth any insight in audio structure and gear. Generalizing for easy consumption by saying "modern" is againsty my opinion :)

(Continued) Failures for Gods has a raw production since Paul Orofino (legendary producer of classic rock bands like Blue Oyster Cult) had never produced a death metal release before working with the band. The raw production ended up working in the albums favor having a bleak atmosphere of say an obscure black metal composition. Unholy Cult has a full dark epic sound continuing the sound of it's predecessor album. Lastly the work on Shadows in the Light has a great dark militant sound overall!

This is sad and I agree with you! I can´t describe better than you. I also don´t know it´s just my impression but since Alex Hernandes left the band they were never the same. Steve Shalaty is a good drummer but limited compared to Alex (also Craig Smilowski). The feeling is that they could offer something much better because obviously they are a very talented band. I hope that Vigna don´t allow the band go from "Majesty" to "Decay"... ;-)

While I do not like the production, I do like the composition. This sure isn't any Here in After, but it's a good death metal song on it's own. I also liked Alex Hernandez better than Steve Shalaty (still like steve a lot though, one of my favorite drummers). Again, I wish they would go back to the good ol production of their Alex Hernandez era albums :)

My favorite is Here in After (1996), but Close to a World Below (2000) is my second favorite release. Father, You're Not A Father is an excellent song! Immolation is a great band, I just find the new CD not up to Immolation's high standards and downright boring and generic. Morbid Angel is a joke releasing an Industrial/Techno/Pop release for Marilyn Manson and White Zombie fans to rave at dance clubs.

I remember picking up here in after in 96 as my first Immolation encounter. I understand the urge to keep the somewhat raw mix/masterings, from earlier releases. They kind of settled their sound in a certain manner, as other bands from that era :Morbid Angel as a example. Sometimes i just think that there are certain metal fans out there, afraid of moving on from the older school of production habits. A slight pan or eq of the kick, could make people raise their fists. Overreacting i call it.
