To be fair, this vocal style has been Immolation's style practically since the bands' beginning. The style they play both instrumentally and vocally has set them apart as having one of the most unique death metal sounds to this day. I don't personally think he should work on anything except more albums. Just my opinion though...

You should try out melodic death metal bands first if you're looking for melody (Amon Amarth, Insomnium etc.). Immolation was, for me, one of the hardest dm bands to get into

Idk, thats one of the things I like about immolation is Ross Dolan makes death vocals sound natural whereas alot of death metal vocalists (especially nowadays) sound like they are trying way too hard. One thing all my favorite vocalists have in common, (regardless of genre) is that they all have UNIQUE sounding voices, where it sounds like that's what their voice sounds like when they raise their voice as opposed to being a 'try hard' & coming off really pretentious.

sloppy? I find singing well articulated 'couse I can actually understand most lyrics without reading the text. For a death metal growls this is top. Mikael of Opeth has awesome voice and deep mushy growls that sound very cool, but aren't as clean as Ross does it.
