@@andregon4366 They're ridiculous, but they do seem to struggle against magic. They go into battle against Malekith (on Sulekh, his old dragon) and save Caledor the Conqueror, reigniting the flames of Asuryan in his body. A small group- with help from Tyrion- holds off N'kari long enough for Teclis to pull out an Asuryan death star laser. Caradryan shows that almost no physical attack can harm them. They have a kind of foresight which lets them dodge almost everything by just a hair, saving as much energy as possible to fight almost endlessly. Only N'kari's magic, Malekith's magic and Ka-Bandha's extreme rageforce 2000 (magic) have been able to harm them seriously.

Pretty sure the high number of heroes was for the resistant trait. +3 Melee Defense, +5% Spell Resistance, +5% Missile Resistance for infantry units.

Armies that don't rely on ammo are great if they have the sustain to grind through multiple stacks. The fire resist helps a bit against armies like Tzeentch or Khorne daemons who have magical flaming attacks.

One of the things that could have been added was a lyminark of hysh. This also gives a 10% ward save to allied troops but its the same buff as the spearmen. The other allied unit could be chaos warshrine for the +20% physical resistance once enough people died.

I suspect the Fire Wizard is there for dealing with artillery. He is not needed in the blob to buff the guard and is free to roam and deal with threats

I wonder if the fire mage isn't there because of the high fire resistance of the Phoenix guard would mitigate damage from bad casts from flamestorms etc.

Its probably there because of the fire weakness it gives to everything with every cast. Flame resistance is fine and all but the crazy good fire weakness can help phoenix guard delete large lords or large monsters that much quicker. That in combination with rhuin would really help.

Just a little tip from a trick I learnt. If you need to leave a flying unit for a few moments while you do other things, draw an S curve whilst holding shift. Ranged units always fire on the vector the unit is travelling on at the time. so if you draw a curve, the vector is changing every frame. So you can draw the curve and leave your flying unit for up to 10 seconds while you do other things, and they will take minimal damage. after practice they will take no damage. If you draw an O, the units will blob up also. You can see it demoed in the infinite winds video i did a while ago for Mercy (i dont do many vids so it will be easy to see)

phoenix guards- Mute Unbreakable warriors who have foreseen their own death and yet quite possibly the most unreliable units in the lore.... what if the phoenix king sends them to defend a vital port/ city etc and they are destined to die there? Well.. they cannot tell their king that the vital destination is already lost... he will just have to wait until after the Dark Elves have gained a Foothold..

In how much detail do they foresee their own deaths? If all they see is getting stabbed by a dark elf on the walls that doesn't mean they know the city is going to fall.

That's not how it works. They are unreliable, but not because they can't communicate. Their unreliability comes from the fact that they may simply refuse to obey the Phoenix King, as their duty is to guard the Shrine. Phoenix Guard very rarely die against other infantry, but Caledor the Conqueror only managed to get them to defend Ulthuan with great difficulty when Malekith and Morathi were ravaging the outer kingdoms.

iirc fire weakness can stack, so Handmaidens use their root skill and the fire wizard spamming burning head for debuffs would make them even stronger. Not sure if Armour of the stars is still in W3 but if yes then you can give it to the fire mage for stalk and still have the utility of flying unit.

Phoenix guard don't have flaming attacks. So inflicting fire weakness on the enemy wouldn't help

@@jamiehaslam1465 he has fire banner tho, which he put on 1 handmaiden, and since the game plan is blobbing everyone will have fire attack. Not essential to get fire weakness going but burning head also applies -8 leadership debuff which is nice I guess

I did this with Imrik in WHII. If you do a bit of exploiting you can stack the rewarda for thounds pf turns. It’ll give a 30% phys res, speed, perfect vigour, and a ton of AP dmg both flat and % based. (With the lesser dragon rewards) Basically you wouldn’t need the spells so be cast, and they’d deal out so much more dmg. Not sure if you can still exploit the encounters tho, never tried in WH3.

Maybe that fire wizard with dragon is to give them occational flaming sword of rhuin for magic attacks and the dragon for Siege attacks. Also if you want to burn them with flame storm, it won't damage your own troops much if it goes avry.

Flaming sword is useless as it only buffs the non Ap damage they do which is less then 10. If you want flaming attacks on them there is a banner of flame on a hand maiden.

I am wondering, could you have used a flame storm on top ofr your own troops? If I saw that correctly they would have had something like 30 or 40 ward save + a bunch of spell resistance + fire resistance and flame storm does not have too much armor piercing in the first place. So I guess just casting fire magic where your troops and the enemy troops meet would actually quite good.

This army seems fairly vulnerable to daemons, especially Tzeentch and Nurgle soul grinders and hellcannons since the magic attack ignores the thick phys resist.

Tzeentch at the very least would be equally resisted by the very high fire resistance of the Phoenix guard. You’re right about Nurgle though

@@pythax1567 the fire resist wasn't nearly as high as the physical resist. the difference between taking 40% damage and 10% damage, and that doesn't account for infernal gateway which doesn't do fire damage.

There's a button in the lower left corner of the screen when you're in a battle. Pressing that opens the stat display until you close it.* It might also show up on the campaign map, but I can't remember, and I can't check right now. *it can get finnicky, but it can generally be fixed by re-selecting a unit.

Locking the formation will make it so the units will all try to stay in the same formation. So if you set up a checkerboard, lock formation, and then move the group, the entire group will move in the checkerboard. Otherwise they will just go back to standing in a line

The two fighting Heros were difficult to see in action not being able to micro into duels using their counter large or hero puts abit too much bias on just the guards units. some testing is required separating a unit type- Fire users are because the area has many vamp or tomb units vulnerable to fire due to regen?

The fire wizard makes sense....they all have fire attack thanks to item - so every cast lowers enemy fire resistance = bonus demage....the life wizard is strange to me, but maybe just a back up healing, dwellers below extra MR boost??

The general rule of thumb is, if the bonuses comes from a passive buff like Shield of Saphery, and that the buff appears on the list of status affecting the unit, it does not stack with other instance. The buff is either ON or it is OFF, you can't activate it multiple times. If the bonuses comes from a trait or skill with no passive aura involved, then it should stack. Example given, multiple "Crushing" Handmaiden will stack their buffs to charge bonus and weapon strength. EDIT: On the subject of passive auras: Auras with different names should stack, even if they give the same effect. For instance, Wood Elves have two tiers of buffs for their heroes, that stack together even though one hero can only have one of the buffs up at once. Hence, a very optimized army wants two heroes giving the first level and the second level of the buff.

Is it me or is this much dumber than the historic total war games? I am playing Rome 2 at the moment and I have to do more with my units than finding items and blobbing.

It sure as heck is. Rome 2 is also the first entry into the shallow and dumb iterations of the fRaNcHiSe. Attilla is the slightly better, yet very flawed "fixed" version. Problems with those games is the same as with WH. Rigid tier systems and stat-wankery just without endless stacking of magic items/skills/crap. I'd suggest Shogun 2 or if you don't mind the old interface, old CRAPPY camera & old af graphics - Medieval 2. Much deeper tactical and strategic depth in the older titles. If you can play and learn those games you'd probably have a blast.

It depends what you call dumber. Warhammer Total War titles are strategy games with a lot of RPG elements (items, level up, etc.). Minmaxing your unit can be a much bigger part of the game than the historical titles. It's easier to learn but if you watch top tier players going against each other, it seems much harder than Rome (units from different races are much more different than in the historical titles) Apples and oranges basically 😁

I enjoy the warhammer games but find myself raging at them a lot whenever I outplay the AI but then still lose because I can't kill a level 20 vlad or some bullshit lord on a flyer darting in and out the games are infuriatingly unbalanced in that regard.

@@MrJeanlebonjambon in my observation the units and especially the lords are more important than the maneuvers on the battlefield you will almost never see a mass rout after a devastating flank, you will see mass rout only after the army loss penalty. And if you are unlucky you'll still loose because vlad von carstein or some other bullshit unit is unbreakable.
