Thought is purposive and thinking is ideation, we think in terms of images, concepts or symbols. Language means a system of symbols. Knowledge emerges from our need of communication. Communication is fundamental to the existence and survival of humans. Knowledge was supposed to guide our intellect to differentiate right from wrong. This civilization couldn't teach us how to Love too. Not talking of love as any kind of personal exchange - because that invariably is driven by individual motives, some safety - security - matter of convenience type calculations are always there and so on. But the basic idea of love ... it teaches us how to expand our ego to accommodate others in our world. The more respectful a person is he automatically becomes tolerant about others. The more sensitive a person is he will never harm others for his own sake / will obviously be unselfish to a large extent and will work for greater good. Ethical behavior also cannot be taught to anyone. As J. Krishnamurti says, to understand love - we need to understand what love is not... "Love is not hate, love is not jealousy, love is not ambition, love is not violence. When you negate all that..." empathy is left, when that is sympathy to all - we call it compassion. What Swamiji said, what Ranganathanandaji maharaj was saying here - at the heart of that service is compassion. Actually, being impersonal is much wider a concept that requires great depth of understanding. And of course the quality of our life cannot be raised unless we raise the texture of our thoughts and the depth of our understanding.
