If you rewatch the lightning scene, Yennifer absorbs the lightning and then can redirect it. This along with her ability to portal demonstrates her ability control chaos. The mages who failed had no control at all. They still can be conduits for chaos, and are used to power Aretuza.

@watashi No. It's the students that have (some) power, but are not good enough that are turned into eels. It's explained in the show. The idea is that they are not good enough at magic to become sorceresses, but that it would be dangerous to let them go back to the world with some magical power.

@watashi That's a strange take ..... The students with the most control pass, Serena had the most control and easily passes, Frangilla also. It is implied that Yenn should fail but Tessia passes her because she can see her power (plus sees herself in Yenn). The students who show no control fail and are turned into batteries. It is easy to see since those who failed to capture lightning are the ones who fail (Yenn captured lightning but in herself instead of the bottle).

Basically everyone hates or loves Jaskier (the bard). Personally I love him and the way his flamboyance plays off of Geralt’s stoicism. And Toss a Coin to Your Witcher is a banger, especially the “epic” version.

Love the reactions! This episode is definitely a bit slower, more of a character focused episode, especially on Yennefer. Those mages who failed and weren’t able to control chaos were turned to eels to give power to Aretuza and it’s mages. Something you should know about the world of The Witcher... The elves like to spin a magnificent sob story, but they are not at all without fault. Nor are the humans. Both races have committed horrible acts, and both have acted stupidly when they had very obvious chances to do otherwise, and both have continued to spur on the fight between them for ages. The only place that this actually wasn't done was in Nilfgaard and the other, surrounding southern countries. Down there were what were called the Black Elves. When humans migrated down there, they gradually interbred with one another their cultures became interwoven with each other. Nilfgaard is unique in that their people are technically descendants of humans and elves, their culture and architecture is very much based on elvish precursors, and the Nilfgaardian language is a fork of Elder Speech. They also have a very proud and noble history and respect for magic.

As I understand it there are 5 normal books and two books of short stories. The whole series only overs the short stories, so there is a hell of a lot more to come. I have never read the books, but I have watched the entire series, Stick with it, it is brilliant!

They explain the whole eel thing a bit later. I wanna tell ya but it's best just to take it all in stride. The show is a hell of a ride. Also Episode 3 is probably my second favorite episode. Such a good one. If possible, that ones worth splitting into 2 parts for sure.

So The teacher turned the girls into eals because they failed to control theire magical powers. Because of that they couldn't be relesead back to theire families / lives because without control they are danger to themselves and others. If that were to happen than the treat of humans turning against mages would be high! So since the girls still have the magical energy inside them, they were turned into condoits (living batteries) for Aretuza (the school Yennefer was training in). These eals as far as I know are powering the schools defenses and generally supply magic to that place. The line ''sometimes the best thing a flower can do for us is to die'' was forshadowing this eal turning. You either do it or you dont. If you do, you'l get everything you ever wanted, if not than there can still be some use for you. Tisea always knew she was gonna choose Yenn, but she had to push her buttons so that Yenn could emerge and become who she needed her to be.
