It's more than that. The witches draw on the raw powers of chaos to cast magic. Doing so takes a toll. Magic doesn't come without a cost as we saw in the episode. The girls fuel a font of raw magic and their essence is as such sacrificed to fuel the power of the mages. It's a cleaver work around, I believe in the games the mages had a fragment of the fountain as a piece of jewelry that linked them to it. I wish they had shown it here more

Both swords are for monsters. Some are just only vulnerable to silver, like vampires, strygas or dopplers - creatures of magical origin. And having a separate sword just for humans doesn't make any sense. Witcher's job is exclusively to kill monsters, why would they carry a spare sword just in case they run into some asshole? For all I know, humans die equally fast from any sword, doesn't matter if it's steel or silver.

They drop hints here and there regarding the timelines so you have to pay attention to the dialogue. For instance (not a spoiler) when Princess Cirilla was waiting for her grandmother when she went to war in episode 1, Mousesack mentioned they would lock girls in towers and they would die back in the day. Then back in Geralts timeline Stregobor the sorcerer mentioned the girls born under the black sun and being locked in towers recently.

A piece of advice for you both. This is a show that you really have to pay attention to what's happening and especially the dialogue. That's because of the different timelines for each character. There's usually a throw away line that clues you in on where in the timeline the scene takes place. This is especially true for the next episode, so pay close attention.

Elves and other humanoid races like dwarfs, halflings, gnomes are generally called nonhumans in Witcher world. There is deep seated hatred between humans and them a lot, especially elves - unlike Lord of the Rings universe lets say, where they are mostly friendly. Nonhumans usually live in ghettos in human cities, there were pogroms done upon them (like the Great cleansing mentioned in the episode) A. Sapkowski - the author of the books took inspiration to this aspect from treatment of Jews in middle-ages European cities, probably. There are huge parallels.

You were wondering what elves did to deserve all the hate from humans, simple...they did nothing wrong. In this world, Elves and other non-humans (dwarfs and gnomes and some monsters native to this planet) were the original inhabitants of the planet. One day during the "conjunction of spheres", the planet temporarily merged with another, allowing other beings (humans, monsters and ancient magical forces) to enter this world. Elves were kind and taught the humans (who they saw as new neighbors in their world) how to use magic to defend themselves from monsters, but humans being humans, killed most of the elves out of greed and racism and drove all non-humans from their cities and into the wilds. Since then, humans proclaimed themselves as the new rulers of the continents while erasing all evidence that elves and the other races were the true rulers. In short, humans are the "invasive species" not the elves. This adds to one of the realistic morals of the story that humans can be/are more monstrous than an horrid creature Geralt has faced in his 60ish years of traveling. And yes, at this point of the story where he meets Dandilion, Geralt is around 75 years old.

I believe that humans honestly began the war with elves because they were afraid of a community of people that were that powerful with separate interests than humankind. They were trying to make sure the Elves wouldn't use it against them, but by committing genocide against them guaranteed they had a powerful enemy.

Man, I thought I was into the show, but you two have the ***best*** attitude towards it that I've seen so far in reaction, especially since you have not played the games nor read the books. I thought your post-episode comments were really lovely, particularly when you said (to paraphrase): "I felt like the language and story were really eloquent, like you were reading a book". Really insightful for someone who's never read them (me either I should say). One thing I've picked up is that there are two basic parts to the books: A series of short stories, and an Epic that follows. The show seems to keep this format in that it's revealing the epic but letting it 'fall out' of a series of short stories. Personally I love that they (the showrunner is awesome, watch her interviewed) didn't even bother trying to stitch the short stories into a narrative. Sometimes a collection of stories (See J.D. Salinger for the very best example) has it's own merits and you don't have to know everything to appreciate each on it's own. With the Witcher I think they've tried something very new: A series of short stories out of which a continuous narrative reluctantly emerges. Think of it like a bunch of adventure stories you hear at the pub from a retired adventurer: They don't know it's an epic story. You don't know it either. But someone, with the grace of history, picks up these stories and weaves them into the greater whole.... eventually. Also, I love how much you both love Yennifer. Anya is doing an amazing job, and though I'd have cast differently I think the casting pays off because the actress is such a good pair of hands for the part.

The first part is to help clear up confusion for fans of the books, the games and you, the reactors, when reading comments. Spoilers further below. Jaskier, the bard's name means Buttercup. In the games they changed his name to Dandelion in order to make it less feminine. The girls who failed the lightning test were turned into eels. The girl who the glass shattered in the face of, the girl who successfully caught lightning, Yennifer, and the girl who successfully levitated the Rock but whose hand is deteriorated are the only ones left from that initial series of classes. Just standing on that platform alone would be enough to fill them with electric chaos, but since the other girls weren't able to bottle the lightning, or absorb it like Yennifer, they were turned into eels so that the electric chaos could then be used to power the school. Effectively, since they failed, the only use they had were as batteries. The effect of her being bought, after the first night, is that the head mistress has effectively taking Yennifer in as her Ward and adoptive daughter. A similar relationship exists between the wizard from episode 1 and Yennifer's boyfriend. However Yennifer's boyfriend is nowhere to be seen during episode 1, despite there being that connection.

I actually really liked the conversation Geralt had with the elf king in the books. It was like a more elongated version of what they had here. He told the elves they would be better to let the past and land go, to leave and go somewhere else to rebuild their civilization. That so long as even one of them lives, the culture lives. And if a culture lives, then the civilization lives on. Because here they have that talk then in the very next scene we see the elf skulls and it's like " well, should have listened to Geralt"

#spoilers maybe?? Oh trust me, you'll ship Geralt and Yennefer hahaha. The timeline stuff was an interesting choice for the show but it's ultimately helped flesh out Yen and Ciri even more I think. The first two books are a collection of short stories that are supposed to be set in the past (Geralt's timeline in the show) before the events of the main saga of 4 books that is Ciri's timeline. It actually allowed them to introduce Ciri sooner in the show which is cool.

People that spoil always get defensive and never admit it. It just comes with that selfish, narrow mindset. Just preemptively defending myself for the 100% record of that happening and I was right. The only mistake I made was giving a heads up. Usually the person makes an ass of themselves but this gave you the initiative to try to pin that on me. I'll go back to asking politely and watching the meltdown happen.

@@RomanyGypsy92 "oh trust me, you'll ship geralt and yennefer"....definitely hints a plot point. Dont play dumb to advance a point. Theres a whole thread on another reactor's comment section where someone revealed the same thing as you and had 8 different people claim that it was a spoiler. I see this everywhere. It's like watching a playthrough on twitch and some dude says "oh man, my favorite part is coming up!" When people say "shhhh" they always say "what?! I didnt reveal a plot point!"

i’m continually torn between finding you guy’s comments hilarious and being scared you’re going to miss important dialogue. i guess it’s both but could i recommend watching with subtitles if you aren’t? everything is explained in the scenes themselves if not by words and if you miss both while talking then you won’t really understand what’s going on. that being said, i’m really enjoying your reactions and i can’t wait for the next! hope you don’t take offense to my comment, i honestly mean no harm💕 edit: the girls that were turned into eels became power sources for aretuza. they weren’t good enough to ascend but they couldn’t be let back out into the world with the magic that they do know.

"It's a stupid reason to commit genocide for a whole Mass species?" There was the endangering of indigenous people when their land was stolen from them, the holocaust and slavery because of race....it's because of racism, hatred, intolerance and stupidity. That's why the elves were killed off in the show. It goes back too the historical fiction meets fantasy part of this show in this world or universe.

i think about the jumbled timeline..yes, it's a surprise, but you'll only notice it if you pay attention to the dialog... and so far so good.....probably the writer want us to feel smart if somehow we figure it out...

The elves are essentially the indigenous race of the Continent, who have been genocided and had their land stolen by humans over the centuries. No spoilers, but this isn't the last time that's going to be, erm, "discussed."

Toss a coin to your witcher makes me almost cry when i hear it because its literally a retelling of a story in order to give credit to the man who deserves it, yet his whole life everyone he meets hates him by default for what he is and not who he is. Its tragic when you consider his incredible lifespan

The eels are basically girls that have the ability to do magic, but arent good enough to become a sorceress. Becoming a sorceress is more of a political position. Only the "best" become sorceresses. The ones that dont make the cut are turned into eels and used as a power source for Arituza (the school).

Those three girls failed and were transformed into eels that were still magical. They were put into a pool that is used to draw Magic for the school which keeps the building magical. They were basically sacrificed because they were not promising sorceresses. It's funny that you guys decided that the teacher wasn't so bad at the same time that she was forcing yennifer to shove her friend into the pool

The 3 girls were turned into eels because they didn't ascend. They couldn't control magic, so they are now used as power source for the school. Tissaia taught them magic, but they cant control it, so it would be way too dangerous to let them go freely, since they would abuse it and cause chaos. Tissaia sees potential in Yen that's why she didn't turn her into an eel. She's a good teacher, she just wanted Yennefer to learn how to control her anger in tough situations. She knows she's the strongest mage at the school.

Witchers want people to think they are ruthless. It's not ascending, Ascending for Sorcerers is being paired up with a King. Those that don't fit the bill, are used for power to defend the building Also the Bard is necessary to balance out Geralt. Yennefer in this state it to weak of a person to thrive off of love and care. She needs the extreme tough love to become what she ultimately does. Great Vid again, this is Arguably the weakest episode, so sit right, it gets better! 😇

Through all of Season 1, Ciri's timeline is the latest. Geralt's timeline starts at about 30 years before Ciri's, while Yennefer's timeline starts something like 70 years before Ciri's. Geralt and Yennefer's timelines converge just past the middle of the season, then all 3 converge at the end of the season. That relationship between timelines isn't demonstrated here, but in next episode you'll meet a character who is a bit past middle-age in Geralt's timeline who is a little kid in Yennefer's timeline (if you pay attention, there is a portrait that gives you a hint who to watch for :D ). I love how the first 3 episodes are built around themes with the cuts between timelines examining those themes from different perspectives - Episode 1 being destiny, duty, and choice, Episode 2 being the conflict between humans and the elder races, especially elves, and Episode 3 being less strongly theme-based but with the scenes kinda rhyming in theme on either side of each cut between timelines. One of the tropes that The Witcher subverts is that in a lot of fantasy anyone telling backstory knows what the truth is and relates it honestly - The Witcher isn't like that. It is generally a bad idea to take the views expressed by any character as actual truth, which is why we are shown so many perspectives on the conflict between humans and the elder races in this episode. All of the views expressed in this episode are true but none of them are completely true - all of them filter truth through what their character knows and what their world-view is. These episodes are so packed with detail that they are great for rewatching.
