Gina is one of those characters that just clicked for me at some point. I think it partly came down to a small but meaningful step-up in her writing/a change in the writing direction they had for her character, and partly came down to me just accepting her for who she is as a character lol As for what makes this show work - it's similar in terms of absurdity to Community, which is one thing I like about it, and both shows typically have a new plot each week. Both shows also have a fantastic cast of funny characters that all fit different archetypes and can be paired up to play off of each other in interesting and funny ways. But I think that Community draws its strength from its ability to constantly genre-shift to tell whatever crazy story in whatever crazy medium it wants to, or to pay homage to whatever movie or cinema meta element it wants to, whereas Brooklyn 99 is more consistently a police procedural with a crime to solve or some other issue to overcome, and that allows it to riff on the tropes of classic police shows while also capturing a lot of what makes those shows fun to watch - the light mystery solving elements as the show takes you through the same journey as the characters each week.

Just wondering if you've thought about or already have watched the sitcom Abbott Elementary? Its similar to Brooklyn 99, in that its that same "Office" style mockumentary, but it's set around an inner city elementary school in Philadelphia. It's got a majority black cast, is hilarious, super cute and all around entertaining as hell! Season 4 is airing right now.
