I need to create a video for an important school assignment. I'm in my senior year and I need to showcase complex and movie editing features. What is the best software for me to use? I can purchase software with a 30-day trial as I won't be needing it for longer but I need to know the best software where I can showcase different complex features of video editing in my video. Which software should I go with?

I remember when I first got a Mac, I felt iMovie was too difficult and preferred to use the iPad version, when I learnt it, I felt the iPad version was limited, and when I got FCP, I struggled at the beginning and usually went to iMovie, but when I learnt it, I felt iMovie was limited, and now I realize the iPad and iPhone app is too basic 😅

Great video. I've been using imovie for my channel for over a year. After watching your pros and cons I'm convinced to stay with imovie for the time being. I've discovered several work arounds that you mention as limitation, (adding multiple screen effects to one clip) e.g. blue screen and picture in picture. Also found you can make multiple changes in an audio track. Hover over the audio line and press the option key it will but a marker add several and the audio can be moved between the markers. Great content thank you, subscribed.

There is the option / workaround to create titles etc. in keynote and either export those as movies / png / tiff for import to iMovie to enhance your titles options. Keynote will even export movies in 4K.

I used Final Cut Pro X for a year, then had to go back to iMovie because I no longer had access to the account that had the license for it. I did find that it was relatively easy to step back, though you find yourself looking for ways to compensate the video tracks etc. As I am doing more explainer videos and cycling videos, I am now considering taking the plunge and buying it myself. I think the improved workflow is probably worth the money just in time savings.

Hey Pete, yes iMovie is great. I use FCPX mainly and when I went back in to film a new turorial series this week, I realised just how good it is, so many featues! In the older version of iMovie, you used to control the aspect ratio and transition of the text. In iMovie 10, you can’t. iMovie 10 is okay but not as good as its previous version. I currently have a new MacBook with extremely limited space. As much as I want to get Final Cut, my Mac’s space is almost really low because of moving my iMovie projects from my old Mac and installing Adobe After Effects. I wish we could be able to change the SSD for the new MacBooks. Sadly we can’t...
@RogueRail
@RogueRail 2 жыл бұрын
@Nich do-in stuff Thank you for the advice. In fact, I've already moved my iMovie Library into an external drive. Now that you mentioned it, I told dad about my limited space, and he told me I should try external SSDs. You know what apple should do for future Macs? They should put some kind of slot for the internal SSD on the motherboard, that way we have a way to change our SSDs

Great video!! I have not yet graduate to using FCP but I have been able to get around some of the iMovie limitations that you mention albeit for non-professional video by using some work arounds. For example: 1) additional title transitions can easily be created in Keynote using a transparent background and animations and imported into your iMovie project. 2) I can export a movie from iMovie bring it into Photos and crop into a different size e.g., square and c) for layering I just export my 2-layer video in pro res format and reimport back into iMovie and add another layer. I recognize size that these are just simple workarounds and I'm sure there are others but it is a 'poor mans' way of doing AMATEUR videos without the expense of FCP. IMHO

This video was really helpful! I’m a student and there’s a new bundle with Apple where it’s $200 for all 5 pro apps including final cut. I’m a very new KZbinr, had a gaming channel w/ no editing prior and recently switched it, I wanted to capitalize on that deal but this made me realize that I really do need to start with iMovie. Thank you for the video, I do use iMovie and I absolutely love it for its simplicity. I’ve been a music producer for almost 20 years and one thing I learned is that simple is always better. Whether it’s simple with editing, or music, or video, simplicity is key. When things are simple, the artist can focus on being artistic and creative - it allows the mind to flow. When things get technical it just wears down the brain and can be seen in that persons work... I do have to admit that iMovie limits you to many things like for example something as simple as the last fade-out, I want to be able to control the length of it to adjust to the feel of the music but I simply cannot do that, however, with everything in life there is a give and take. Have you used adobe premier by chance? How would you compare that to Final Cut Pro?

I am enjoying iMovie as I learn editing and grow my channel. But, the one concern I have is that my laptop slows considerably if I don't delete footage and movies. I bought a MacBook Pro with 1TB and an M1 because my Mac started freezing, but now the laptop does it, just taking longer to happen. Maybe I'm not clearing out all or enough of the duplicate files? If I leave the program and restart it seems to work much better for a bit. I'm wondering if Final Cut would be better or worse in this regard?

Good video! I've been using imovie for quite a while now but I'm thinking about buying final cut pro, especially because nowadays the program is much more affordable. In my opinion the first versions of imovie had much more options; you could also make 4:3 ratio movies and they had much more film effects and extended audio editing capabilities. The downside was that in the older versions the editing was "non reversible" and the redering happened during the editing process, which made the process quite slow. For me the earlier versions felt also much more intuitive to use. and seems to me that with every new version of imovie, Apple tries to change all keyboard commands.

I'm sure it's already been answered somewhere in here but do you have any kind of preference of Final Cut Pro vs Adobe for editing Drone videos?

Thank You for such a clear understandable description of both iMovie and Final Cut Pro. Even though I have used iMovie for years your taught me things I did not know. I plan to get a new Mac and needed to decide if I needed or wanted to add Final Cut and your have the first review that really helped me get the difference. Great job-

thanks for pointing out that "Final Cut Pro X can do a lot doesn't mean you can do a lot with it." - this is exactly what I am struggling with right now hahaha. Good Video :)

Hi! Tanks a lot for the video! I had a question regarding amount of space in the hard drive you use with every program. I have the impression that Imovie tends to use a lot of space of your hard rive and you can't really get rid of the material you out in the program very easily. And it seems to me, that is not possible to put that material in an external hard drive and work with it in order to save space in your computer. Is ist possible Tod do that with Final Cut? I would be very grateful if you could give me some orientation about this topic!

Hey Eduardo Open the Movies folder, then drag the file named iMovie Library to your external hard drive. When the library file has finished copying to your external drive, double-click the library file on the external drive to open it in iMovie. If an alert appears asking you to give iMovie access to a removable volume, click OK. Hope this helps

Hey ! I just bought a Mac book pro and edited my first movie on Imovie, I loved it. However when i came to export and save, it just said failed. Do you have any advice. I literally bought it yesterday . So not sure if its an update. All the cameras used etc, are on the list of Imovies editing list. So not to sure why its not working :( Can i copy everything over to final cut pro, or would i need to start again from scratch? Thanks in advance. x

This might save you four hours of hassle and support time - when exporting your video, choose quality as on't export as High, NOT Best (ProRes). Worked for me

Thank you for your great tutorial. iMovie is outstanding…especially for free with Mac. If anyone needs more video layers, they could export the edited clip out then back in to IMovie & continue adding another layer & build a composite when needed.

I've been having a lot of trouble with iMovie recently and was wondering if final cut pro was also can be very laggy at some times?
@editorskeys
@editorskeys 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Cole, i think each editing program has its lagging issues at times, it all depends on your computer/laptop quality and what size footage you are using. Final Cut Pro is definitely more advanced than imovie so it will indeed be laggy at times, but you can also do a lot more in it than imovie. i hope this helps, feel free to ask for any more help. Thank you.

Good presentation I prefer still travel/street photography shooting RAW and enhancing in Lightroom. I occasionally run into a video clip scene and shoot that with Sony A7. As part of my stay at home project I find importing enhanced stills works really well with the small clips as needed to tell my story with the iMove program, sharing that on sites like FB, Flickr and KZbin. No burning desire to use Final Cut Pro but can see how useful it is for the video pro advanced community. Thanks for the easy to understand information well presented. Enjoy the Holiday Season and greetings from Northern California Richard
