Ethical harvesting is number one priority, much respect Piet. When I hunt here in Michigan with my 300 win mag I don’t take shots past 300. Even though me and my friend practice at 6-800 yards no problem here at the ranches. Too much to go wrong at extended ranges and I believe the animals deserve more respect and an instant painless death.
@martinstiastny7679

I couldn't agree with you more. I also feel that the animal deserves more respect. They're not "targets". Having the ability to shoot distance is for enjoyment and to tax ones self. Shooting at animals at great distance removes "the hunt".

What is a too far of an ethical shot to one person may not be for another. If a person can make extremely high percentage hits at 800 yards, just as high a hit percentage as another person can do at 300, then there is no difference, right? If one lives and breathes ballistics and puts it to use on a regular basis, then hitting with high confidence at further distances, then the sky is the limit as long as the shot can be reproduced with high certainty. I hope since us hunters should be on the same side of thought then this scenario is accepted.

Dear Pieter I’m 100% for 0 % animal suffering. Your methods are efficient and respected. I love the fact that you love nature. Your commitment to ethical hunting is evident taking into account your obvious fitness and skill. I’ve always tried to limit the risk of wounding an animal by setting rules and parameters for myself. Long range shooting is great fun when making holes in paper though. I commend your commitment to ethical hunting by shooting at realistic distances where external factors like wind and mirage are manageable, and having equipment that is so accurate that a out of sync heartbeat gets forgiven. Your endeavours bring back wonderfull memories now that we are living in Western Australia.

It's great to see a marksman that understands the difference between 'Can I versus Should I' when the skillset is applied to hunting. 'Can I versus Should I' can be one of the quickest way to separate non-ethical versus ethical hunting.

I still think its unethical shots. Yes, It can go well. But the head is the most mobile part of an animal, and no matter how good of a shot you are there are infinite things that can go wrong, wind, animal moving/scared, error in shooting, weapon or bullet etc etc etc. It all takes a couple cm and you have a animal without bottom cheek starving to death, or a blown of mule.. Why not just take normal vital area shot? Its not like they can go anywhere.

Piet, respect on your principal on hunting. I wish more hunters understood the ethics of ending the life of an animal. We have too many who want to “shoot” at silly ranges; that is not hunting. I’d rather go home empty handed than wounding. Thanks for sharing your trip into the Karoo.

Let me clarify, I will never go hunting with the goal of finding animals at extended ranges. There are just too many variables that are completely out of your control. I would say that the worry shouldn’t be so much whether the animal takes one step or even runs 50yds as anything shot through the chest likely does not feel anything due to shock and adrenaline but still expires rapidly. The reason I stay away from headshots usually is that the risk that something goes wrong and you hit the jaw is too great. You can guarantee that if you blow the jaw off a deer/antelope then it will take a lot more than just a few steps and will take days if not weeks to die. I do agree that headshots have their place, the first one for example had minimal risk as it was a little closer and the animal was facing away from you meaning the chance of a clean miss is greater than the chance of a wounding hit. That being said, at 215m with a 20mph wind and shooting face on, the risk outweighs the “return” in my opinion. Also as a side note, while Pete is obviously very experienced and an excellent shot, many people on here are not and are certainly not capable of pulling off shots like that, videos like this only serve to encourage this behaviour which does not sit well with me. Great shooting, however I am afraid I don’t agree with the “lessons” in the video.

@@jaydenlagana4566 I will admit the PST Gen II has a bit better glass, at 1,340 yards, I could pick out shingle by shingle on a church steeple on the gen II, while on the strike eagle I couldn't quiet do that. I have had a PST Gen II for a little over a year now and honestly, I cannot say I've ever missed a target because of glass quality though, the locking turrets on the strike eagle and the additive of adjustment made the choice for me.

Question for the more experienced long range shooters: how is the vortex crossfire ii as a beginner scope for long range shooting? By long range I’m talking at or around 500 yards (I’m in the Midwest, it’s hard to find places with more distance than that). The rifle I’m using is a Remington 700 chambered for 300wm. Everyone has their own opinions for long range hunting. I shoot out to 600yards and will take coyotes out to 600yards. Deer hunting right now 300yards is max for my 6.5cm though I know I can take it out to 500yards easily. My next rifle is a .300wsm that will be my long range hunting rifle for out to 600yards though I’ll be practicing out to 1000yards. Personally preference great video ready for the next one. People also have issues with head shots. I’ve not taken one on a deer yet I just prefer heart shots with the occasional lung shot. But that’s based on a individuals skill. I can take a head shot I do it on coyotes often.
@grumpygramps9707

I’ll save you a ton of head ache. I shoot 300wsm with 200 gr game kings. It’s a tough round to load for with heavier billets. A 300 win mag will do long range WAY easier. give better velocity , cheaper and easier on brass. You have to max out a 300wsm to come close to the 300 win mag. Unless you build a 300wsm on a long action which defeats the purpose of a short action. A 300 win mag or 7mm mag will be a better choice. Good luck. Cheers

A vortex strike eagle nice! I have a diamond back scope, was a great scope for a recent prairie dog hunt I got to go on. Excellent shooting as well in your video.

Hi, I noticed that you have a recording device attached to the scope, which one do you use? Thanks

I would not have taken the shot on the last springbuck. I feel the other buck is too close behind it. If the projectile makes it through, you might need tracking skills

I agree, watching it back in editing I realized the same thing. So we learn and strive to improve each time we go out

How do you make sure they don't move their head? There is still several tenths of a second between the shot and impact.

Yeah, accidentally shooting them in the jaw, not really an ethical shot

Not on topic with the video, but how long do your 6.5 creedmoor barrels last? and how many more would a casual shooter be able to get?

I’m at about 3k and most of mine is PRS shooting. Will probably retire that barre but still hunt with it close range.

@@IMPACTSHOOTING Is that with N550? I've heard it's harder on the barrels so I was looking towards N160. Thanks for the quick reply btw!
