You do NOT have to remove the airbag or steering wheel. If you didn't know, well you did more work than required but got it done. Once you remove the lower panels under the dash remove the lower cover of the steering column by removing the two T20 torx fasteners on the bottom and then separate the lower cover from the top cover. To remove the top cover you must look directly up at it from the floor board. You will see one external torx bolt on each side which requires a size E5 torx socket (These fasteners will look like the end of the tool you removed the other fasteners with). Unscrew those and the top cover comes right off. After that just remove the two fasteners holding the switch to the column and undo the two electrical connections and remove said switch.

I also just replaced mine in a 2002 impala, just turn the wheel to the left to get behind it, DONT TAKE IT OFF!! also, you do not need a inverted star bit, I used a 6 point 5/32 bit and it fits perfectly. Also, no videos show you how to easily remove the metal plate that blocks the wire harness for the switch, there are 4 Philips screws and then 4 10mm screws that you can see real easy if you look for them, you’ll need a 6” extension and a drill/ impact driver... this guy is making it way harder than it should be!!

A nice video. Teaches, in general, how to remove the Air Bag & Steering Wheel, but for the 'Turn Switch Removal' it is not necessary although it gives better access to the switch. A video publicized by '1A Auto' shows how to replace the switch without removing the steering wheel. Thanks anyway, I liked this video.

Great video. EXCELLENT camera work. I'm hoping I can get the switch out without pulling the steering wheel since I don't have that puller. robinsonauto video shows it being done. Tough angle but he broke it loose - position the steering wheel top hole, at the 9:00 position to give you a shot at the lower screw. Thanks for helping out the do-it-yourselfers!.

To replace the turn signal switch on your 2001 Chevy Impala, you can follow these steps: Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent any electrical shock or damage. Remove the upper and lower steering column covers by unscrewing the screws or clips that hold them in place. Locate the turn signal switch on the left side of the steering column. Disconnect the wiring harness that connects the switch to the car's electrical system. Remove the screws or bolts that hold the switch in place. Install the new turn signal switch and secure it with screws or bolts. Reconnect the wiring harness to the new switch. Reinstall the upper and lower steering column covers. Reconnect the negative battery cable. You can also refer to the following videos for more detailed instructions: "REPLACING 2001 IMPALA HIGH BEAM TURN SIGNAL SWITCH" 5 "Impala Multifunction Switch Removal" 6 Note: The multifunction switch controls not only the turn signals but also other functions such as headlights, wipers, and cruise control. I don't know if you mentioned it , disconnect the negative battery terminal and disconnect the air bag connector in the right I/P junction box. its bright yellow.

I have switched out the multifunction switch on my 2004 Impala twice within the last 7 months. I didn't remove the airbag either time. I only disconnected the Neg battery cable. After replacing the multifunction switch this last time, the problem still remained. Changing the switch fixed it the first time, and the symptoms are exactly the same as before. It IS possible that the new multifunction switch is defective, but if replacing the new switch doesn't correct the problem, I'm at a loss for the reason the lights won't come on at all. The high beams will only work as long as I hold the dimmer switch in all the time.

were you able to correct the high beam issue? I just pulled my switch out but haven't bought a new one yet. I also have to hold my dimmer switch in all the time for the high beams to work. Let me know what your fix was if you fixed it...thanks

while this was a well done video, i JUST watched another that didnt remove the steering wheel at all. I feel like that was an extra step that wasnt needed at all and if not done properly could cause a TON of issues

These instructions are for the 2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala (Eighth generation) Turn Signal Cancelling Cam replacement. Once you use a PowerBuilt Streering Wheel Removal Set RENTAL from AutoZone to remove the steering wheel, after you removed the airbag, then you must use "snap-ring pliers" to remove the snap-ring from the Steering Air Coil Kit GM part # 26089982, 26088931, or 26092622 aka "Clock Spring". The next step is that one must use the Lisle 57340 Steering Wheel Lock Plate Tool and a small vicegrip to compress the turquoise/emerald spring, which pop the "Lock Plate Ring" GM part # 05694191 up from the lock plate. You can use picks - mine were from AutoZone - to move the lock plate ring from the lock plate... Once removed, then you'll be able to slide the "Turn Signal Cancelling Cam" GM part # 26086061 off the "Upper Steering Shaft" GM part # 26064247. You must be very careful NOT to disrupt the connection of the "Bearing Spring Set" GM part # 15231641 and "Bearing Kit" GM part # 26001827 from the "Upper Steering Shaft" GM part # 26064247.

There are 3 plug in connectors I found I have one that isn't plug into anything with only 2 wires in it. Does it go anywhere?

Didn't have to remove the steering wheel, just used a torx bit and a 1/4" box end wrench to get the horizontal retaining screw. Also may be right may be wrong, but I cut the green and the brown wires and crimped on bullet connectors as I'm not enough of a contortionist to get to the plug on the steering column

the horn on my 2002 impala stopped sounding UNLESS the steering wheel is turned 90+ degrees to the left, then works perfectly. would replacing multifunction switch solve this as well or is there a horn ring and contacter as in older cars?

at 8:33 there is a connector that you are removing. I took mine out and it was a few days before i got to install my new one. I can't for the life of me find where it plugs in. It is the 2 wire connector. What switch does it connect to? Thank you

Have you ever heard of the multi function switch causing the car not to start? We have no start now and erratic fuel gage from day one. Car had been in the shop for three months from the day we bought it over this issue. Turn signals seem to work fine but the high and low beams are hard to change you have to force the switch to work.

I'm not expert but a multifunction switch wouldn't cause the car to not start.. That's a whole other circuit. The circuit for the multifunction switch runs the high beams (on/off), the windshield wipers, cruise control, and turn signals. (solving a turn signal issue right now) The problem for switching high/low beams would be part for the multifunction switch. The erratic fuel guage could be a bad stepper motor inside the dash instrument cluster, or the float is somehow damaged. The float is inside the gas tank with the fuel pump.. electrical issues are very hard to find. That's all. Did you ever get the car fixed? lol.

Water in the gas tank for one, two replaced fuel pump and fuel sending unit as it's all in one. The mechanic they were using was just not fixing things right. New mechanic, better results.

Lets not make it harder than can be DO NOT REMOVE WHEEL OR AIR BAG can all be done just removing panels under street and top cover and lower panels... its a 2 hour job for sure but take Torx 25 bit (NEW BIT IS BEST) on lower switch screw set on torx bit and use 1/4" wrench open end to break the screw free then thumb it off by hand... save lot work from removing wheel.
