In this episode of the Imp And Skizz podcast, we discuss the concept of Swagger and how it relates to confidence and success. Of course we dive into the moments where swagger goes too far and evolves into arrogance.

the last story that skizz told about the Artist who brought the kid up on stage. that is amazing. that Artist gave that kid so much Confidence in what he was doing, by recognising his enthusiasm. I met Rodger Dean at one point, the artist who did the Album covers for Yes, Asia, and a bunch of other bands. and when i told him i was an artist, he looked at me and said "tomorrow, bring your sketchbook. i want to see your work." I was so embarassed and unsure but my mother made me do it. and he went through and pointed out all the things that i did really well, and how i could improve them to be even better. I will never forget that moment.

I think the difference is when someone has swagger they are not actively thinking about how well they do their thing, they are just doing it without any fear that they won't do it well. Arrogance is when you are actively projecting the aspect that you are the best at doing what you do.
@Trauma284

@crystallilly1814 exactly that. Swagger is still humble and arrogance is justified bravado *correction is usually justified bravado. I've seen arrogance that has no reason. Empty confidence.*

Hey guys! I just graduated from a high school in Colorado with a very similar situation to the band/drumline situation you described, and I was the percussion captain, and I relate to the band thing so much. Our band used to be elite, and they've been declining a significant amount, and this last year we didn't even have a percussion caption head (teacher). So the responsibility was mine. It was a student in an adult role and I just want to say I'm so proud of what I was able to do. The band got 10th, but we had the best percussion in the state. It's just been pretty cool hearing the drumline stories and It's cool to hear that people like you guys cared about it and it impacted you as much as me.

Oh man! This reminded me, I used to walk up to the plate and stand squared up, but wouldn’t bring my bat up to wiggle around until the pitcher was ready to throw the pitch. I just held the barrel of the bat in my left hand and stood there, waiting for them to step onto the rubber and frame up. Rather than stand there waiting, wobbling the bat around for as long as they wanted to delay on the mound. I didn’t mean it as a swagger or intimidation tactic but it really pissed some of the pitchers off, and once I knew that, I never stopped. I was the reliable “single” hitter so not like I shattered confidences by then hitting one deep into the field, but I didn’t want them jerking around so it was like, okay when you’re ready to throw, I’ll get ready to bat. Ball’s in your court, literally.

I think confidence as knowledge of your skill and a projection of that knowledge in a positive manner. Therefore, one can be confident in tasks they they may not be "good" at, e.g. being new but also going to have fun and learn is still a bit of confidence because its an accurate representation of ones skill in a positive manner. I hope people considerate this application of confidence as well. Stay positive my friends.

I love the story's of their old drumming days, I play Alto sax and I'm currently a senior you impulse talking about you being last on the line, and them saying you can only be as good as the person next to you. I'm 2nd chair in my band class and it's making me realize I need some more swagger in my playing I need that confidence that I am as good as that first chair person next to me. I can get that solo because I am going to work hard for it and earn that swagger. If I biff it I'm do it with swagger. PS I know this video was uploaded 7 months ago I just can't get enough of this podcast.

I love you guys talk about your marching band experience. I was in a really good high school marching band too, so i really relate to a lot of your stories. I definitely learned confidence from my own experience, and i dare say even swagger. As a freshmen, i won the "most improved marcher" award which the band directors give to the best freshman marcher that year. By junior year i was a squad leader and senior year i was one of the drum majors. I gave it my all, was always improving, and i felt so confident and secure. I've been chasing that high ever since 😅

Mr. Skizz ... the power of confidence is awesome. My child had it and still does 28 years later, it was a lesson I taught her years ago. One day I said I wish my kid would fail at something just once so she could learn from it, my ex got mad at me and in time she did fail though she did not fall down the path of failure. She learned about adversity and how to cope, as a result she excels and is full of quiet swagger that is more felt by others than seen.

I think I should say before I forget. But I just noticed in this one. That whenever Skizz says an opinion of his or just something he believes he often ends it with “I really do”. I’m not sure why, but it’s something I’ve noticed. And that made me think of you guys mentioning that when you were in school together Skizz would point out little idiosyncrasies about the teachers that made Impulse crack up. So I thought I’d share the small idiosyncrasy I noticed about Skizz.

I have kinda an intresting perspective on this because i don't consider myself a confident person but yet I've quite often had people go "oh i wish i had your confidence" I always make sure i know what I'm talking about when discussing things and if i don't know something i do what i can to learn. But apparently to others that is enough for them to perceive me as confident. However they're misconstruing competence for confidence. I always make sure to be competent but I'm almost never confident. Another thing that people perceive as confidence is I'll go up to people and just talk to them. Which i didn't think was unusual till i knew someone with social anxiety and i learned a lot from them about it. It's just facinating that you can be perceived as confident when you aren't.

to me Swagger is a mix of Confidence and Charisma. Not necessarily "Involve" other people, but more of an "Acknowledgement." But Arrogance is also an acknowledgement of other people, but more in an Condescending type of way. I work with an old guy who is so skilled, so confident. but he doesn't have Swagger, but he also isn't Arrogant. He just doesn't acknowledge other people, or their skills really. He just quietly goes to work, and does what he does, sometimes to a fault. If he had just a little bit of Swagger, he'd be such a better team member, because he is so skilled. Charisma is definitely part of the equation.

I don't know if I have swagger usually. I know my limits and know what I'm good at, i know my abilities very well bc I'm logical and introspective to an abnormal degree My whole life, people usually associate that knowledge with bragging, arrogance, and swagger. My brain works different, so i never did, at least it was never my first thought nor my intention. It may be my ADHD, it may be one of my few autistic traits, but informing others of my abilities is something I don't associate with that social strut I'm not arrogant, I've never been arrogant. But I've been called arrogant for simply being aware of and sharing my strengths. I'm naturally good at math and languages, and this fact makes me happy bc I like having those abilities, so sometimes I mention it. But then people call that arrogance and treat me like I'm a jerk. So now everytime I share my abilities, I overthink how someone could see that as a jerk move, bc it hurt every time that happened and no defense i gave would change their mine. It hurts when people expect your brain to work the same as theirs and treat you like someone you aren't In short, I don't know if i can afford swagger while I'm around neurotypicals who don't understand how different I am

To me, to have swagger you need the skills to back it up. And most people I’ve met in my life so far seemingly have the skills but aren’t confident. Or they’re obscenely confident but that confidence is misplaced. But there was one kid in my secondary school. We were acquaintances. And he was weird. Not because he was gay or because he was a nerd or because he was camp. It was because one of his best friends was one of the “popular kids”. Like one of the kids that everyone on our year knew. Regardless of if they were friends with him or in a class with him. Well anyway, since he was a fat gay nerd (his words not mine). He was a common target for bullies. But he generally got a pass because he hung out with this popular kid. Well anyway. This guy had a quiet confidence to him most of the time. And perhaps because he was just good at everything. I live in the UK and we switched our grading system to be numbers 1-9. A 4/5 is a C. A 6 is a B. A 7 is an A and 8 and 9 were for A* and a level above that. This dude was good at everything. Apparently he never got anything below a 7. And in his better subjects he got 8’s and 9’s. So when one of the biggest bullies in our year punched him in the gut. One of the best things I’ve ever seen in my time at school occurred. He laughed. And when the guy in school who everyone’s afraid of punches someone in the gut and he laughs at it. Well the look on this bully’s face. Priceless. And you know how I said this dude was good at everything. Well it turns out he knew Judo. And in this bully’s confusion. The dude walked forwards with the most swagger I’ve ever seen from someone, grabbed the bully’s collar and sleeve and started to fall backwards, pulling the bully with him, and using his foot to launch the dude over the back of his head into the tarmac. And nobody knew what to say. I don’t think anyone had ever actually stood up to these bullies. So they were surprised when someone did and of all people it was this guy. His popular friend was also there so maybe that’s why none of the bullies friends stepped in. But that popular friend seemed to know him well enough that he knew he was dangerous. He just stood back and watched. Maybe he just sort of snapped, with this dude getting physical. He seemed to feel justified using his skills. If this world was a story, that dude is the OP anime protagonist. I think he’s studying nuclear engineering at Imperial College London now. But yeah, if anyone has swagger. It’s that dude.

Ooooooo a guest? Will Ms. Tango finally be making her appearance? Another great one on the books fellas. To link two podcast eps together, i think "whats stopping you" can often be confidence in ability and end product. For this, the "you go and do you" is perfect. A few things to realize is the more one does something, the better they become. Dont worry about being the best. Everyone can and does learn. Confidence comes with competence and competence cant be bought. Some get a boost from talent, but doing the work will always outpace sheer talent. Early swagger is "I did a thing and even if people dont like it or laugh at me, I did what so many others didnt... I started." Mid swagger is "Im learning and getting better. Others may be better, but i can get there." High tier swagger is "You might have ecplised me this time, but you wont get me with that again." Swagger is the confidence of self -- knowing you are moving forward. Eye of the Tiger, baby!

I think you guys should reconsider not giving out names. There’s a difference between not giving a name of a personal friend or boss, rather then someone who is in a magazine or a national company you previously worked for. But for many in the audience it’s like handing us a cookie, and then at the last moment saying, “never mind you don’t need that cookie.” I don’t think I’ve ever seen another podcast or talk show do that, and to be blunt, it’s annoying. I could just say your podcasts are awesome, and they are, that’s why I’m here, just giving some critical feedback from my perspective.

Stepping over boundaries of your own or another person's comfort, Is all part of getting to know who you are, what you like to do, and whom you like to hang out with. If you never go "too far", how are you going to learn? So we might better give ourselves a bit of slack. We're not rational beings. Most of our behaviour is spontane or intuitive. We've all had these moments of "how could I do this". Maybe these moments are especially irritating, when we see things our rational "me" doesn't really like about the "caveman" inside. The actions initiated by our lizzard brain do not always live up to our moral standards.
