In this Chemistry video in Hindi for Class 12 we explained different imperfections or defects in crystalline solids. This is a topic from the chapter 'The Solid States' for Class 12th Chemistry.
In crystalline solids, constituent particles are arranged in a highly ordered repeating pattern.
Point defects are the irregularities or deviations from ideal arrangement around a point or an atom in a
crystalline substance, whereas the line defects are the irregularities or deviations from ideal arrangement in entire rows of lattice points.
Point defects can be classified into three types : (i) stoichiometric defects (ii) impurity defects and (iii) non-stoichiometric defects.
(a) Stoichiometric Defects : These are the point defects that do not disturb the stoichiometry of the solid. They are also called intrinsic or thermodynamic defects.
Following are the types of stoichiometric defects -
(i) Vacancy defects
(ii) Interstitial defects
(iii) Frenkel defect
(iv) Schottky defect
(b) Non-stoichiometric defects : These are the point defects that disturb the stoichiometry of the solid.
Following are the types of non-stoichiometric defects -
(i) Metal Excess Defect
(ii) Metal Deficiency Defect
