Are Russia & China imperialist like the US? Will the decline of the west lead to more fascism in the global north? What is sovereignty? Is every country entitled to it? Where do sanctions fit in? What does it mean that the Global South is refusing to get on board with them? And what are the alternatives to the current so-called rules-based international order?
To discuss this and more Rania Khalek was joined by Bikrum Gill, who teaches at the department of political science at Virginia Tech.

The lesson of China is socialist revolution. The CPC abolished the power of the bourgeoisie and once it got political control, it was able to direct its development and then allow its economy to open up. Unlike capitalism, the new bourgeoisie in China has no political power, so a significant part their capital surplus accumulation can be used to help develop the poor parts of central and Western China. The CPC’s political monopoly and control of the economic commanding heights of the economy enables its rapid development. It’s socialism with Chinese characteristics. Genius.

However the West cannot stop China's rise in economic power just due to the sheer size of its economic market size.

Russia is standing up to the expansion of NATO, contributing to the end of US hegemony, has rebuilt their economy while maintaining public ownership of natural resources, military manufacturing, and large sections of social welfare. They have continued to be economic and political supporters of socialist Cuba, Bolivarist Venezuela, indigenous collectivism in Bolivia, anti-jihadist Syria, socialist Vietnam, and many more thorns in the side of imperialism. They have developed alternatives to the almighty US $. They have collaborated in economic development between advanced economies and the global south through the SCO and Belt and Road Initiative. No they are not a socialist society, but their actions are encouraging much of the world to that goal.

Neoliberalism is not fascism, but it leads to fascism (elevation of "Nation" to the sacred, but in a profane way.) A great irony because the Mont Pelerin Society was established precisely with the goal of preventing fascism ever again rising in Europe. The neoliberals were however using neoclassical economics thinking, which led to austerity programs, precisely the sort of macroeconomics that empowers fascists. People vote for the monsters to protect them from the financial parasites.

Some like the US,UK,Germany choose which UN resolution to follow or not and when to break international law.
@Barlin-d2j
@Barlin-d2j Жыл бұрын
which UN resolution/international law isn´t followed by Germany - or the US/UK for that matter ? European powers followed to Afghanistan when the US triggered articel 5 after the terrorist-attacks, so: calling their allies to help. It was a war against an organisation but not against the country. Most western countries didn´t have anything to do with Iraque or Syria. The US tried to apply pressure - for example on Germany but Germany refused to go to Iraque. Same for most other NATO members. The evidence the US had was too lacking and an undemocratic system is no reason to start a war- especially since Saddam Hussein was the guy the US supported and used before... ;) Same with Syria btw. Germany and most other european countries didn´t send fighters there. Germany instead took in millions of Syrian refugees and spend billions of dollars yearly to house them, educate and feed them - and suffered from terrorist attacks and violence as a thank you... Most people in Europe, and probably also most common people in the US, are not supporting the warmongering policies of the US btw. - the problem is, that the people in power get rich through wars and the US economy is focused on military... International law would be to respect the borders and integrity of countries. None of the land in Iraque, Afghanistan, Syria, Vietnam etc were kept. They could have stayed or claimed the resources - like the oil fields, but they didn´t. Russia is taking the land and keeping it. They did that before- also doing ethnical cleansing. Millions moved or killed - look at the old Poland, Prussia etc. They use people from the poor eastern part of their country, often from specific ethnical groups, as cannon fooder- while the people in the west - like in moskau, st. petersburg etc. profit from it. So... no keeping land, no ethnic cleansing. That is VERY DIFFERENT to the wars from the "west" (or to be precise: from the US, since most other western countries weren´t involved at all). Rich people/people in power making a profit though wars is sadly the same as in the US or everywhere else.....Putins argument for sending soldiers into a neighbouring country to "protect" the ethnic russians in that country is btw exactly what Hitler used before. Same with the logic of ethnical cleansing- so yeah.... pure hypocrisy Before this gets too off-topic... In my opinion the comment as well as the interviewer and interviewed guy lack a deeper understanding of the topic and critical thinking. Too much generalisation and populism is used to argue- which is dangerous in itself. History teaches us that this pretty much always ends in blood shed.... I do agree that everyone needs to be hold responsible- including the US and european countries- though

In the 80s, Malaysia was independent for some time but British companies still controlled a considerable part of key colonial industries like plantations, which allowed the companies to not respect sovereignty of the country. The Malaysian government managed to effectively nationalise the plantation giant Guthrie through a sudden share buyout on the LSE, giving it majority shareholder control, ie using the West’s own capitalist rules, fair and square, rather than by decree. Of course after that they changed the rules on the stock exchange to prevent a repeat. They change their rules if they’re losing. Global South countries have to struggle to assert sovereignty against a stacked deck, all the time.

You are both so right about the importance of multipolarity. Brian Becker criticises the notion on the rationale that a multipolar world in the early 20th century lead to two world wars. I digress, however, because both those conflicts arose in a pre-nuclear weapons era, which have been a real game changer in global power conflict. Moreover, I cannot see how any room for the emancipation of the global South can occur without multipolarity. I agree, a multipolar world is not the end goal, but it is an essential first step towards construction of a better and more just world.

That’s why they hate China so much and so irrationally. I think they expected China to become like them once it industrialised and modernised. Converted to neoliberal capitalism, like Japan. But China kept their own worldview. And that worldview makes an escape hole for the captured countries in their economic imperialist design.

Imperialism is the highest stage of capitalism. Read Lenin. It is the US-led system since world war 2. Russia is not imperialist, it is the resistance against imperialism

Thank you so much for this interview with Bikram Gill. This framing of the entanglement of capitalism and imperialism and how it operates indirectly through coercive financial and institutional rules and exploitative debt is so essential to understand. So too is how underdevelopment and deprivation of sovereignty through capital control is deliberate and exploitative.

True that the West is declining but not in the same scope. Western Europe was doing fine until they have been dragged into Anti Russia and China conflicts. It is the US that will decline the most. The US is the sole imperialist. In 15 or 20 years the poor in the US will get poorer, small and medium sized businesses which is half of the US economy, will shrink. As people become desperate for food and shelter there will be more crimes and violence and shootings. Cities will become more like those in India or Brazil where billionaire mansions are surrounded by slums. Probably the last companies to remain super rich are banks, oil companies, weapon manufacturers, Big Pharm, Big Coal, and the media, i.e. the mighty military industrial complex. The military bases will be the last thing to give up to protect their empire of dollar and oil. But they aren’t worried. When the time comes they will be the first to exchange their dollars into digital RMB, sail their yachts to Monte Carlo or private jet themselves to the golf courses on the Italian Alps, lay back and live happily ever after.

Not so sure if the USA still has another 15 to 20 years as the domineering superpower it is currently. Tha madness in trying to stay the top dog by stirring up wars with Russia and China + Iran, Venezuela etc. eith by proxy or by itself will see USA sinking faster. Just like someone stuck in a pit of quicksand or swamp.

"The US is the sole imperialist" Lol don't make me laugh. I can almost guarantee that you're European espousing that drivel: always pointing the finger at the US, as if countries in the EU didn't help along the way or set the foundation for the US to rule. By the way, doesn't France still practice neocolonialism out in the open in West Africa? Didn't the French and U.K. help in overthrowing Gaddafi in Libya? Don't Europeans test their weapons in the US' regime change wars? Oh yeah, right.

Just clarify an often asked question why China is socialist. China is a socialist country in a few important ways: 1. All urban lands belong to the state and rural lands to the co-op. The ownership of land is the ultimate tax lever in the hand of the state - or its people 2. China’s economy consists of 60% private and 40% public. State enterprises including banks do not have profits as its sole goal. Instead, they are anti-cyclical tools for managing economic cycles. Thus it misses the mark when some say China’s banks are insolvent or its 40000km high speed rail system is operating at a loss or the hundreds of modern bridges reaching into mountainous remote regions are a waste of money. They may only appear to be not profitable when measured in the narrow scope of the entity but beneficial in the societal perspective. 3. Its governing body has long range state planning every 5 years. Each planning cycle has extensive iterative consultations with many stakeholders. Capital has a role but doesn’t / can’t dominate the state policies. Capital is not above the state, as often seen in the west. Last year the state ordered Ant-group to stop its world-record beating IPO, dismantled an entire industry of school exam preparation, ordered online gaming to be limited in hours for teenagers are good example. Other success stories in long range planning includes Beidou (Chinese GPS), its space station, its C919 civilian aircraft competing with airbus and boeing, its military rapid ship building capability, technologies such as ultrasonic weapons DF-17/21/26 that achieves A2/AD against American aircraft carriers i the region. The list goes on. 4. China’s state governance makes a distinction between public opinions and public interests. The public opinion can change on a whim, easily manipulated by media narratives and limited by peoples knowledge and skills. They can deviate from what is in the public interest significantly. Good governance means do what’s good for the public interest, not catering to the public opinions as often is the case in the west. 5. China’s civil servant sector has an extensive talent scouting and promoting process to ensure the smartest people with extensive work experience to gain important responsibilities. The process not unlike a big corporation promoting from within. Many politicians in the west would simply not make the mark in the Chinese system. China’s politicians are generally dull in their speech but focused on delivery because public speech skills are not valued as in the west. See this TED talk: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qWG8m39vp7-siJI
