I read somewhere that the Big E honestly thought Mortarion would roll over on the traitor legions once push came to shove, probably because of all the psychers and tyrants in their midsts, and them emerging from the Warp as Plaguemarines enthralled to Nurgle is what made the Emperor finally execute the last resorts. Don't know if it is true but I hope it is.

Anyone can defeat Custodes, they kind of suck. That's why they were consigned to the Palace forever, they can't handle a real war but are far too expensive to just get rid of so and it'd embarrassingly require admiting that they're maintaining these 10 thousand jerks for literally no reason when their job can be done by a CCTV and no one feels like doing that.

Some of this is very wrong. Perturabo was Nurgle's first choice. Mortarion didn't choose to join Nurgle until there was no other option. Also, as noted in the comments, it was Albion, previously the UK, not south eastern europe. Iron hands, Iron warriors and death guard are all from Old Albia.

I'm pretty sure the opinion among all the other primarchs of Mortarion was that he was an ignorant clown and asshole. If Sanguinius was beloved by all the primarchs, Mortarion was reviled by them. He was no hero, even in his life prior to meeting the Emperor.

I kind of got the sense that it was more of a self-fulfilling prophecy. His brothers were likely wary of him and avoided him based on his appearance and demeanor and he likely picked up on it and was further embittered. Given how we've seen other primarchs compete and rebuke one another, he likely also felt resentment and insecurity because he didn't have the same achievements or particularly excel or stand out at anything in the same way as his brothers (aside from maybe physical resilience).
