I love this game, but you're absolutely right when it comes to the wonky control bugs and weird collision. As someone who's played 1000+ hours of this game, the occasional bit of bullshit can really make me mad. I was also pretty angry when I learned the PS2 & PC special stages are glitched up the ass, and it turned out running without boosting is the fastest way to go. I think the games strongest points are the Stage themes and Music. (Also, only now have I learned from the comments section that Team Dark can manually start time again, holy shit)

It was the son of one of the other Voice Actors (I think it was Vector's), his sister also played Charmy. They were hired because it was cheap labor. Why pay for professional voice actors when one of your existing VAs has 2 kids he wants to have in the game?

Same. Even though some stages made me regret being alive, when I finally finished the game I realized how much I enjoyed it. In fact, it's been years since I've sold my Playstation 2 but I still have my copy of Sonic Heroes. It's the one game that started my journey with my Playstaion 2. I've promised myself to keep it forever.

Sonic Heroes is probably the most nostalgic game in the Sonic series in my opinion or any game. It was the earliest game I can think of in the series that I played. And the song "Sonic Heroes" brings me back to 2004 and the main menu music too.

Just a few nitpicks: gold turtles are easily destroyed with the tornado jump to turn them upside down. The 3 switches can easily be pressed with flying formation leaving behind one character at a time until only Tails remains and is not as tricky as with Power formation, and lastly you can simply homing attack to flowers to start flying after you get to level 3, or more importantly, to blow torches with team Chaotix.

Yes! I just tried it to make sure. The level 3 homing attack has the same effects as the tornado jump, which is why it also allows you to disarm robots from their shields.

Shadow isn't edgy, that's just a common misconception that started based on his appearance and how SEGA handled him in his spin off game, before Shadow The Hedgehog in 2005, Shadow was a well written character that had an arc and wasn't extremely angsty, but his own spin off ruined his special character so that it could appeal to more mature kids and/or teens. Sonic 06, the game that essentially ruined the reputation of the franchise, fixed Shadow as a character. He wasn't overly edgy there, he had goals, he actually helped Silver see the truth about Mephiles, and played a huge role in the story, more than that of Sonic. After 06 however, Shadow was sadly reduced to the stereotypical edgelord the fans saw him as, leaving the character in ruin and in serious need of a rework to this day.

Good to hear from you again. It's been a while. Welcome back! I always loved Sonic Heroes as a kid. But I'm not gonna let nostalgia fog my vision and tell you it's _perfect._ It clearly isn't. There's so many things wrong with the physics and level design that, it almost makes me think that the game is rushed, or incomplete? I can recount so many bullshit moments from my experiences playing the game too. Still, there's no denying the bright tone and cheesy charm, that...it's still one of my favorite Sonic games. The soundtrack and creativity of it still puts a smile to my face! The final boss is still one of my all-time favorite Sonic moments too. ...It's still better than Sonic '06!

Haha, this video nearly killed me. I'm fairly certain I worked on it every day for 3 weeks. At least 80 hours poured into it! I don't think I articulated this as well as I wanted to in the review but I actually like the levels. It's the controls I think are really borked. Had this used the same engine as the Adventure titles it might have worked out a lot better. As for the game, I hated it when it came out but after finally properly playing it and beating it twice... my hate has subsided. Your comments sum it up nicely, love the art direction, love the cheese, and the finally boss didn't make me want to throw my controller :D

13:30 - Just to note, Shadow was never confirmed dead at the end of SA2. He fell down to Earth and everybody assumed he was dead but uh, as we can see, he wasn't. Izuka wanted to do more with Shadow after SA2 and so left his "death" ambiguous. Since Shadow as popular enough he was able to bring him back and expand his story. If Shadow wasn't well-received, we likely would've never seen him again and SA2 would've just been left as a semi-closed story (the question of why the Eclipse Cannon was built in the first place is only answered in Shadow).

despite their mass of technical shortcomings I appreciate the older 3D Sonic's infinitely more than the post 06 games. They just had so much more ambition and they dared to try to make something of the series. New titles are mostly the same thing over and over. (Iizuka has actually said he wants to remake SA1, so hopefully your wish comes true)

While I do think this was a good review, even with all the problems Sonic Heroes has and I will admit are flaws, I still love it tbh. Yeah it may be rough around the edges, and yes, I think that some things could have been refined much better, there's a lot to enjoy with Heroes like you said. The gameplay has a lot of depth to it. The team system really works in this game and the level design accommodates this gameplay type to make it work really well. The music is great. Not one of my favorite soundtracks in the series but it is a memorable one for sure. The story writers did the right thing by simplifying the story for a new audience. While I love Adventure 2's narrative I will admit a lot of it can be a little convoluted and doesn't really fit the core narrative of a Sonic title. Sonic Heroes' narrative on the otherhand does work for how it is. Basic yes but to be fair, so were the classic games right? So it fits right at home in my book. Honestly, I just love this game a lot. Call me nostalgia blinded if you want but I love to pop in this game every once and a while. I feel it's one of the few titles even now that basically asks me to do better in a stage. And in an age where most Sonic games are pretty easy, Heroes is one of the few to still incentivize better play. Now do I think Heroes could have been better? Definitely. The special stages are terrible, sometimes the controls can be wonky and weird, and it can be tiring to replay the whole game with 4 teams as well as getting the chaos emeralds just to unlock the final story. But in general, I would say it's overall a great game. An unpolished one but I think it was going somewhere with it's gameplay style.

I'm a firm believer that sonic heroes is a good example of how 3D sonics should be made. If you made one like it without all the unnecessary moves and much more polish it could make a really good sonic game, unlike modern instalments with their many features. In conclusion Sega should just go back to their roots with much more simple moves, less story and much more polish that can be achieved with modern tech.

I agree, for the most part. I think that the biggest way they could've improved the game was to remove all of the teams except Team Sonic. That way, they would only have one campaign to work on, leaving them with lots of time to polish controls, level design, etc. Team Sonic's campaign has 14 levels with 7 different level themes, which is good enough to make a complete game.

28:03 Gold turtles cannot be destroyed when tucked into it's shell. This is explained in a hint bubble found somewhere in the level. EDIT: You can also use the tornado move to flip the turtle and destroy it from the underside.

I think you hit the nail on the head on this game. I just recently bought this game to get closer to completing my Sonic collection. Sadly I didn't enjoy it the way I enjoyed Adventure, Colors, Generations and definitely Sonic Mania which I put up there with Sonic CD, Sonic 1, 2, 3 and Knuckles and the Advance series. Thanks man! There is definitely something about Adventure 2, Heroes, and Shadow that appeal to a new generation of Sonic fans that didn't seem to click with 90's Sonic fans. Finally beating it (twice) I can see the appeal and understand why the next generation of fans dig it. But like you, it wasn't until Sonic Colors that I started truly enjoying the series again. Though I wish I hasn't skipped out on the Advance trilogy back in the day. I was missing out!

As much as I adore this game (it's my personal favorite Sonic game of all time and my 3rd favorite game period), your criticisms of the game are both valid and accurate, although I didn't agree with all of them. The levels are pretty solid all around. Unlike most Sonic games, I felt the second half the game was much better than the first. The jungle levels, haunted levels, and final levels were all fun and enjoyable.

When I was very young I used to play the PS2 version with my sister. My vague recollection of it is that the level design was annoying and glitchy at times. I was too young to know there was such a thing as 'Gamecube' and 'Xbox' unfortunately.

30:46 Your supposed to use flight characters when activating multiple switches at the same time. When one switch is activated, one of characters will drop from flight formation until all that remains is the flight character, whom can activate the last switch.

The game does a poor job of telling when you to use what formation outside of flying TVs. He didn't go over (he missed it lol) it but the game treats you like and idiot then doesn't tell you what to do later on. Like that turtle he got stuck on, you have to tornado it. HAVE TO. Instead of making audio or visual clues, they put flying TVs and still poorly convey what to do.

You're supposed to play a better game. Sonic sucks in 3D, and rail grinding sucks. As does replaying the same levels over and over again.

Sonic Heroes doesn't suck, 3D Sonic games are mostly good, rail grinding is fun (granted the Sonic games need to emulate rail grinding mechanics of Ratchet & Clank series, but at least Sonic Team has shown improvement) and at least the levels your replay are actually really fun to begin with (besides they change the stages/objective a bit for each team, so they're not exactly the same).

Love your video, as always. I kinda wish that they only had Team Sonic as the playable characters. Not for the usual reasons other people do, i.e. I don't hate the other 9 characters, but because if they had only focused on Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles' campaign they would have had a lot more time to polish their 14 levels, as well as fix the controls and glitches. 14 levels along with the interesting team mechanic would've been enough for a complete game. Not to mention there wouldn't be character battles anymore. I was curious, though: Why didn't you make this review a part of your "Is It Underrated?" series? It has a mixed reception, so it feels like it would fit in that series.

I think if it only had Team Sonic I would feel more inclined to go after the A-Ranks. As is, ugh. I feel Sonic Colors got it right in this regard. One three hour adventure, and then lots of extra stuff for those that want to perfect their skills or need more challenge.

Honestly, I love the three big Sonic games of the sixth generation, which, to me, are Heroes, Shadow, and Riders, and I really think that they are really underrated, especially Shadow and Riders. Something cool I haven't seen anyone else say yet, when you're a level 3 flight character you can use thunder shoot to automatically grab rings, it's really convenient.

I like this game. I agree it can be repetitive, but most problems you mentioned I've never experienced. And sometimes they're forced like when shadow is grinding and then he falls when you had to jump and use the homing attack. But yes, I agree you can sometimes fall thanks to the controls, especially in pinball levels. So, you're just underrating this game but not that much compared to other youtubers.

...That switch puzzle you were struggling with. If you had walked straight into it head on with a power character you would have hit every single switch simultaneously with no need to even slow down. They are arranged perfectly in the power formation's...formation shape.

Kind of sad to hear that it was overall disappointing. With Mania my love for Sonic was sort of reignited. I played through the old 16bit games in preparation, and after Mania I've begun to play the "lesser" titles like the advance series to fill in whatever gaps I had. That said, I don't own heroes, but purchased it at one point used at Gamestop. I played it for an hour or two, didn't mesh with it and took it back. I've always thought maybe I didn't give it a chance, and since I love the adventure series despite the posthumous hate it now receives, I figured I might finally get to it. I guess I'll spend that time on other more worthy games.

Good review and look at this game. I agree with a lot of what you said, it's fun but it is far from polished and it has quite a lot of problems compared to other games of the time. When I first played it I did like it, even though those pitfalls are very annoying but I had no drive to finish the other teams stories. When I went to play Shadows team I was like, oh it's the same levels, that's lame hahaha I can see why people would like the game though but honestly I wouldn't play it much, maybe go through a single teams campaign for some nostalgia but that's it. Also damn!!! That took you a LONG time to go through, 23 hours for the first play through! Just DAMN!!

Those 23 hours were tough haha, and I don't think that accounts for the clock resetting when you die and return to a checkpoint either (but I'm not certain). Just finally did a full play through of this which is something I never accomplished as a kid. When i was little I couldn't be fucked to actually play those chaotix levels and I'm pretty sure the dark campaign was too hard for me to beat. I think the only two campaigns I actually beat were team sonic and rose. Also the special stages control absolutely horribly when the path starts winding around. This game could've been elevated to another level with more precise controls/smoother game play. I've died way too many times with a power character swinging me off the edge or homing attacks just being bugged in general. Too many deaths in the game felt like they weren't my fault which definitely was the turn off preventing younger me from beating the game.

I never beat this game back in the day. In fact, this game made me I give up on Sonic till Generations. This review is a bit old for me now... but I distintly remembering my feelings softening between my first and second play throughs. After recently reviewing SA1 and SA2... I wonder what my experience would be now.

34:00 Yes. Try spamming the homing attack in the PC version. The speed character won't die so easily because for some bad programming when porting the game, the animation of hit isn't present in the speed character. He/she only has the fall animation and keeps there (only jumps a little or a lot depending on the attack)

You should review Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg. One of Sonic Team's mostly overlooked games. Though it has flaws, I really think it's more enjoyable than most of their sonic games!

For all the other flaws with this game, the absolute worst thing about this game has to be the inability to turn off dialogue and the character select and power noises. There is only so many times you can hear Charmy say "I'll take the lead" without losing your mind

Unlike with Adventure 1 and 2, I am not as inclined to defend this game. Especially since I personally feel this was THE game that started the first dark age of Sonic (especially since Shadow the Hedgehog would go on to use Heroes's engine). However, I will give it credit in certain cases. For starters, I do like that the looks of the levels were brought closer to the more colorful and creative levels concepts of the Genesis games. While it was kinda cool that Sega based levels in SA1 and SA2 on actual real life locations, Heroes still made the right decision here never the less. Unfortunately, the actual level structure is a mixed bag. Especially since; outside of Team Rose, the levels last too long in general. The way Metal Sonic returned is quite glorious. He is arguably what saved Heroes's story in the long run. Without him, Heroes's story would have been much more forgettable. The original voice cast; aside from a potential few exceptions, were at their best. It is honestly a shame they were fired in favor of the generally worse 4kids cast. While they understandably needed to replace Deem Bristow for reasons beyond their control, Jon St. John would have eventually called it quits in regards to Big due to him admitting he did not like doing the voice, and Tails would have eventually needed to be voiced by Kate Higgins or Colleen, it was really unnecessary to fire the rest. By the time of Heroes, Sega of America gained enough experience and confidence to alter the mouth flaps to be accurate to the English voice work. I am not a big fan of most of the boss fights, but Metal Overlord was one of the best 3D Super Sonic boss fights and even the theme that plays during that fight rocks. Heck, the soundtrack itself is generally good.

For your complaint about Team Dark's team blast forcing you to wait, that's not true, the game doesn't ever tell you this, but if you hit the team blast button again while chaos control is active you can instantly turn it off and let time move.

This is actually my favorite 3D Sonic game, but yeah, it isn't really the best. Kinda wish they made a remake or sequel to this game so they can fix some of the issues with it, but I absolutely love the Team concept and would like to see it done again.

It's sad to see that Heroes and Colours are really the only 3D Sonic games to take inspiration from the weird pseudo surreal worlds of the classic games. That's probably the most immediately identifiable and appealing thing about sonic games other than the characters. It gives it a sense of identity outside of "cool" and other 3D titles don't live up to how creative these wacky environments are.

I'll be honest. I hate this game, like every time I try to give this game a chance, it always seems to give me a not fun time. As much as I would love to beat the game, the game just lacks polish and I really question some of the choices this game made. I still will say it's a better game then Shadow The Hedgehog (I'm not sure if you've played that). Also btw not sure if the manual says this but you can cancel Team Dark's time stop by using the team blast button again, too bad the characters in the game never tell you about this. This was a pretty good review, I really enjoyed it!

I've been trying to give this game a chance since it came out in 2004. I remember being excited to finally have a Sonic game on the Xbox (my console of choice after the Dreamcast died). I just couldn't stand it haha. After finally forcing myself through it, I can honestly say it isn't so bad. I think you really have to play through it once to get any sort of enjoyment out of it. The clumsy controls really make hard to get into. It lacks the immediate pick-up-and-play characteristics most 6th gen platformers possess.

You're the very first person that I ever saw disliking this game. But when I played in around 4 years old, then 11 years when I got my copy and a Wii with a GC controller I can say I enjoyed this game. Hell, I even got all 100% on all four teams and did the final story too! But I will say this game did have some problems... The key to unlock the special stage without getting hit, Some of Team Dark stages go hella long (30 minunts to finished Mystic Mansion act 2...), Rail canyon rails are clunky and can easily thrown off of the rail by random chance (But that happens not so often to me), Game characters models are shiny... So shiny... AND YOU CAN STOP CHAOS CONTROL BY PRESSING THE TEAM BUTTON AGAIN? Wow, and I thought I know more about the game. I still like it to this day, but not as much when I was 11... Like a good rating. And I rather play this game again and get all fucking A ranks then Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic 2006 or Boom.

Shadow did not die, it is explained in STH, after 8 minutes of the final boss Eggman will say he is the original, but maybe the one used in Heroes *MAY* be an android.

It's still my shit and isn't a bad game it does have it problems One of them being the controls now I've always played this on gamecube and even still the controls sometimes seems to want to work on its own time. Along with the collision as you said. Now I wouldn't say this is the start of the downfall of Sonic. It was to me at least the last good one before the downfall. Edit: while most of those issues you faced I never faced them but it is true most of my death if from wonky controls and fall off the stage but the issues you've had I can honestly see those kind of things happening in this game but I still love it

I remember enjoying Sonic heroes when I actually played it for the first time in the late 2000s. Yeah I got the game much later than when it was released even though most Sonic games during the 2000 I had actually played not long after they came out. For some reason I ended up waiting really long on Sonic heroes. anyways I do remember enjoying the game when I first played it but it did feel repetitive and I just kind of lost interest. I agree that the game is a bit underwhelming.

I certainly enjoyed this game a hell of a lot more than Adventure 1 and 2 despite those games having better controls
