From the discussions about the port saga, I think the elephant in the room is the commitment we as a country undertook to build the SGR and the secretive agreement we had with China's exim bank. This inturn sacked in KPA, Kenya Railways, Road Transporters, and the clearing and forwarding industry. Just like in the education sector a task force should be engaged to review the relocation of port operations given the obligations we have committed to paying for the SGR as a country. This is a delicate balancing act lest we find ourselves in a big mess. Great discussion by the panelists.

A quite interactive and informative session. A clear understanding on the optimization of port operations as well as cargo haulage. The government has no choice whatsoever other than welcoming the private sectors on board in order to improve on delivery of essential services. It cannot engage in business AT ALL. The importers should have a competitive playing field where they can choose the affordable and efficient means to move their cargo. The message should be delivered straight to the Office of the President while still hot.

One thing is that the containers must somehow be cleared and stored before next haul to destination. If Naivasha this will still take some days, if cleared in Nairobi still there will be some days. All that was necessary was to increase the capacity in MSA so that these containers would take a shorter period to clear and store temporarily in MSA.

As we consinder on where the port operations should be, should we ignore the regional business from South sudan/ Uganda who are now exploring the Djibuti route as an alternative to port of mombasa? bearing in mind that moving the port to Naivasha the SGR and MGR shortened the time taken to evacuate cargo from Mombasa to Malaba by 62 percent, and costs by 58 percent because What importers consider is cost and efficiency. If the consignment reaches on time at the cheapest cost, that is what they will go for. Dr. manduku has explained soo well but i feel he only adressed the local importers which I totally agree with.

What I understand Dr Maduku is telling the people and Kenyans in general is that, if we really on inefficiency to survive, then Tanzania is coming with the is SGR and will go all the to the neighbouring countries. Then they will take all the customers and we are left with local cargo which is insufficient for everyone for survival.

Do you know how many visitors to the coast line to our hotels declined the visits when the port services were moved to mai Mahiu or naivasha ? They sent drivers instead. All the Ugandan, DRC, Sudan business owners stopped coming to Kenya to kill two birds with one stone. Tourism and business. Are there serious hotels in mai Mahiu like in Mombasa and coastal areas ? On the matter of SGR being a non performing business entity, why wouldn't the government raise an IPO where all kenyans with money can invest in sgr. With these funds this line can be extended to Central Africa and pay off the Chinese.
