Listen as Dr. CI breaks down the difference between implicit bias vs. explicit bias!
Implicit bias is something that is unconscious- you don’t know you are doing it. An explicit bias is a conscious bias you are aware of. There is a difference- an implicit bias can transfer to an explicit bias when you consciously aware of your prejudice.
Have you ever experienced an implicit or explicit bias? Comment your experience below

I am a Latino, and I was associated with the NYPD, I have been retired for a few years and during my tenure there, I experienced discrimination and bias for years, and dealt with it to support my family. It has left a very sour taste in my mouth and I wish there was something that I can do about it. I have all the documentation from during that time that it occurred.

I’ve been trying to be more conscious of when I myself am engaging in implicit bias. In doing some research/exploring in the topic i came across your video. Thank you for this and for the work you do. My example is of myself engaging in a bias. I was waiting in line to pick up a kiddo when I saw a woman join the line wearing a hat that looked like it had an Army Calvary hat cord added to it. Instead of thinking, “oh, she must have searched as Army Calvary” my thoughts were “oh, I wonder if that belonged to her dad or grandfather”. Just one of MANY ways implicit bias sneaks into our minds.

I had an implicit bias situation yesterday with my anthropology professor. I attended a HBCU and my professor is caucasian, and there is nothing wrong with that. I find it beautiful that even though we have pro dominantly African American student, we have a mixture of races willing to teach us. My professor made the statement in in our virtual lecture that his friends, who are caucasian as well, found it funny that he works at a HBCU. He said that they had a joke and that he would tell us, but he never did. He never told the joke. I feel he realizes his implict bias and decided not to offend is 10 out of 11 students that are African American. We have great conversations in class, but sometimes I will catch my professor catching himself from say certain things. I chose to not entertain ignorance. I do not know how my professor feels, but I can sense that he may believe that we are not intelligent enough to hold a professional conversation with him. Whether his bias is implict or explicit it will not detour me from what I am working towards but will push me further into proving him wrong.

No, he's probably just scared of someone like you coming down on him so he doesn't speak his mind. You'll basically have a safe one sided course. You can then go on in the real world where there are actual racists (you know, explicitly biased people) and realize you are ill equipped to face it properly. Instead of deciphering whatever your professor is hiding, why don't you listen to the actual course instead? And don't assume my group.

Implicit bias - i assume the people in a group take a similar position to that of the leader by their group identity (is this now explicit?) explicit bias - i become slightly more vigilant near a group of drunk men, more so than i would around a group of drunk women

Thank you for putting it so simple. I love the fact that you broke down how implicit bias can be explicit but explicit can't be implicit. Because once you know you know. Can't act ignorant to the concepts when you are aware of them. You asked for an example from your audience. I once worked in an OR and was responsible for inventory management. I was responsible for bottom-line numbers quarterly and ordering enough supply. I reduced cost significantly and worked with other departments to assist with cost savings. Once I received multiple reports, I presented recommendations for changes to our workflow to increase the cost savings. He took the information and did nothing with it. When I later brought that up in my review, he stated that "Women were not good with money". This was clearly explicit bias. He refused to use any of my recommendations because it came from me, a woman.

Once, I had a kitchen worker and I had a couple of issues in the restaurant and also in my own life that I was trying to seek help for through some of my friends that I thought could help me. This kitchen worker was from Sri Lanka and was a refugee. A couple of months later I realised that this guy used to be a fairly high rank in the army, a software engineer and also a very good photographer and good in fixing electronic appliances too. Now I did not have any other refugee or Sri Lankan friend before so I can't say that my prejudice was explicit. Surely the reason behind why I did not seek help from him was at an unconscious level. At least that is what I think.

Why do I keep finding videos like this? You know there is no scientific evidence whatsoever that points towards an effective way of dealing with implicit bias? It's an emotional response, it's faster than what your rational brain can process because it comes from lower layers of it. Can you change an emotional response in someone? Usually not that much... It takes a lot of practice, meditation and patience to find the right balance that enables you to be an observer in your emotional process. You can't expect anyone to have that kind of commitment into a problem they can't control, that's stupid.

I dont think i would even realize an implicit situation if it were happening to me everyday right now thankfully i work at Kohl's now for the past two years and i have to say i am really impressed with the people skills of my company they really are good to me and where most of all the jobs i had had in my life were deploreable in their general treatment of people across the board and the fact that i can count on one hand the places that had parted with me on good terms that i would gladly return to working at i am thankful to find one more. Srry long sentence i kno. The point i took a hella long time to get to is that i had this one boss and from the moment i started under him i knew he was explicitly biased against me because the very first shift he had changed the way the sections were broken up taking one machine from each of my coworkers sections and putting it into mine doubling my workload on my fisrt day when before that the sections never changed i asked my coworkers and they confirmed. At this place you work one section for one week then move to a new section and so forth until you work all 8 sections at whichpoint you start over. Well every week he changed the sections this same way for the entire two years i worked there and not once did i complain lol there were many other things as well. Every day he would do a team meeting and let everyone go do their work but after 10 or 15 mins he would call me to the back office and scream profanities at me for 20 mins not even work related and give me some crazy task to finish by the end of the day i never said one thing back and finished the task everytime. The most blatant was once he was walking the floor and i saw him go into my section take a medical part off the line of one of my machines with an ungloved hand which that in itself was a very huge no no in a place producing sterile medical parts that come into contact with live patients and then throw it on the floor he did not know i was walking right behind him to maintain that very machine at that very moment well he grabs his walkie and screams for my "20" meaning location for those unfamilar with cb radio lingo i was not even two steps from him when i yelled at him for the 1st and only time working with him screaming i saw you throw that down!!! It was worth it to see his shocked face knowing he was busted for casting shade ( I knew from the first day) as the young gunz would say 🤣🤣🤣 i had to throw that batch away and do paperwork as a result so i did. It was not long after that he was sick of me and displayed his power lol but upon picking up my last check i was told to go to the front office for it which was strange but went anyway. When i got there the manegment had instructed the front desk secretary who was a big deal in there to tell me for them that "this boss and the next one up had both been fired and that they the managment are extending a job offer to me specifically that will remain valid for the rest of my life and if I had wanted i could go and run a whole plant on an island " were kind of the exact words she had said minus some specifics. That company despite my experience with that one guy is one of the good ones that i do still count on that one hand with the few that make it onto that list. Well i just wanted to share this experience with everyone and encourage ppl to tackle adversity head on never give up and endure those tough times if you do come through it the right ppl will see and you will go on when the shade casters find they are stuck in a bog of their own creation!
