I f@ckin love this show. One of the most realistic depictions of what people would do if they were granted powers. The Boys took a more cynical approach and it worked for their context of parodising how ridiculous a justice league would REALLY turn out. But this is such a beautiful way to present that majority of the population do want to live amongst each other though sometimes we don't get along very well. The way the writers wrote Jessica's internal and external conflicts with Trish, Malcolm, Hogarth is truly one of the best writing I've ever seen put to television. Especially when season 1 truly opened my eyes you can write dialogue that you almost forgot they are fictional characters because what they had to go through is sooo familiar, especially for those people who actually had to deal with some sort of trauma.

Not going to lie Krysten Ritter's portrayal of Jessica Jones made me recognize a lot of myself in her, and made me much more confident with who I am. Not going to lie it's also probably the reason I bought a black leather jacket. She'll always be my favorite superhero even though she probably doesn't consider herself a superhero. I think that depiction of trauma and also the bond between her and Trish is really really well done in this show all of the emotions and relationships are complex and they don't make anything black or white, so you genuinely recognize a lot of your own complicated human relationships between these characters because nothing is ever easy when you love someone but also hold resentment for the entire world.

I liked the first season. It went sadly downhill hard after that. Like, they basically undermined everything they did so well in the first season, where they were clear that obsessive behaviour in men is not heroic (only to turn the message into a heroic dead in the second season), that toxic relationships need to be avoided (only to have Jessice bring Trish to the women who is largely responsible for her drug addiction in the second season) and the portrayal of a friendship between two women without the usual toxic rivalry which is so often suggested on screen (yeah, that went out of the window, too....)
@Sofiaode183 жыл бұрын
@@swanpride I am struggling to go through the first season because while I'm liking it so far, I know a bit about what happens in the later seasons and it kinda ruins my perception of Jessica and Trish. They really had something good going on in season one and I especially loved Trish's supportiveness towards Jessica. Even through Jessica keeps shutting her out, her stubbornness in caring about about Jess is precisely what Jess needs. I really hate what happens in the later seasons.

I thought series 1 was amazing, but series 2 and 3 were just okay. This video has given me a newfound appreciation of Series 2 and 3 and even the Defenders series. You have a point. There was something special about the Netflix MCU series. They are all about characters and their motivations. Daredevil, The Punisher, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Defenders had some brilliant character development. Heck even Iron Fist (as woefully bad as that series was), did place the characters on a journey. I think the key theme of all of the Netflix MCU series is trauma. Each of the characters deals with trauma in vastly different ways. The weighty themes for the most part are handled well. Granted, it is probably a good thing the series came to an end. The quality kept diminishing each season, however, I think what we got was pretty good. I'm glad there are people like Implicitly Pretentious that examine what worked since so many people were trashing the Netflix MCU offerings. It is a shame that they are no longer recognized as part of the MCU. Still, at least these series were made. I'm actually glad I watched them, which I can't say for all superhero shows.

Season 2 is one of my favourite MCU things period. I get it isn't everyone's cup of tea since it's mostly just characters you like doing shitty (tho entirely grounded and believable) things to each other. Jessica NEEDS a new Killgrave to orientate herself and give her purpose, but season 2 denies her and forces her to reconcile with a mother who genuinely loves her, but also has done VERY bad things to her and others. It's super heartbreaking.

@MadameTamma Жыл бұрын
I love what this show says about the old debate of "Should superheros kill their enemies?" The answer is a complicated one. Season one has Jessica do everything she can to bring Killgrave down without killing him. She does this both because of a pragmatic reason; she recognizes that the killing him wouldn't help his victims as much as exposing him would, and also for an emotional one. She has been forced to kill before. It was horrible and she never wants to do it again. Ultimately she runs out of options and does end up killing him but not without also exposing the truth. She goes to the police and with Hogarth's help gets off by proving self defense, taking accountability and accepting the heavy weight of those actions. Regardless of whether or not she was justified, there are consequences and she deals with them, not just legally but also with the reputation she now bares with everyone who's heard about it. Contrasting her are people who are willing to kill their enemies and don't take that weight seriously. As a result they make more and more moral compromises and create more problems than they solve. It's not as simple as "Would the world be better of without this person?" Killing creates consequences that ripple.

First I wanna say I’m American and I also know effy from skins. And secondly I wanna say thank u for making such a great video essay about my favorite superhero. I read comics and I’ve seen every marvel project but none come close to the connection I feel to Jessica. Like u said she gives me hope that I too can give my trauma reason and function as I seek to better my life and provide for others. Her stories always feel unique because it isn’t the strength of the bad guy that’s she’s fighting that matters it’s the magnitude of the internal strife she must overcome that does. Some of my favorite moments with her in the comics are usually when she is sitting down with someone about to begin their own journey of giving their trauma meaning and her saying words only a character like her could. Never minimizing but acknowledging the pain and the struggle, and providing hope that they too can pull themselves over that first obstacle. The one u must climb first to be able to want for urself again, the obstacle that is the foundation to rediscovering purpose and self compassion. I really love how u describe trauma because in the psych field they say traumatic memories are traumatic because they aren’t processed as normal memories are. Due to the heighten survival state of the brain during a trauma. Memory and reasoning are lessened during this making ur own current life hard to process and comprehend. This is why reprocessing therapies are so helpful in the treatment of ptsd, we must be able to face those traumas and process them fully, so they lose their hold. Anyway thanks again. I’ve definitely subscribed

I can't believe I watched this whole thing. Good on ya, IP, and you clearly understand what trauma does to our minds. I remember a line from Jessica in (I think) season 1 that's stuck with me because it's simple yet profound, and pretty much sums up what my trauma as an adopted kiddo with an NPD-ravaged momz who basically dragged me around the country like sentient luggage (11 different elementary schools in 5 states) until I was 15, introduced a psychotic and broken older sister (that I loved intensely) for just a few years before ripping her away, and expertly gaslighted me into being the "golden child", the "mascot", and the "scapegoat" all at once. Good times. Anyway - that line: ""I've gone through life untethered, unconnected. I wasn't even aware that I'd chosen that." Yep.

Excellent essay as always! Wondering if there would be a Luke Cage video essay coming up next? As for JJ I always have an appreciation for season 3 for how well it wrapped up season 2 (and made it better), acknowledging what didn’t work with its character developments and went on with it till it reaches a much more satisfying end than I imagined. They even gave Oscar one single appearance to give some closure to his story (though it’s still odd in the narrative why he never showed up again). What Trish did in season 2 to make her unlikable are not glossed over in order to make her Hellcat as in the comics, and she is able to reach this tragic yet satisfying ending. It’s sad not a lot of people actually got to experience season 3 as it is really a decent surprise to send off the Netflix series.

the second best character in the series imo has to be alisa jones. the actress was just so perfect at playing a kind of frankenstein's monster version of someone who used to be jess's mom, but the only other person who knows what jess is going through, and alisa appeared to be getting better the more jess and her bonded and understood one another and their triggers. the best part is alisa is supposed to be a villain, but she isn't really. she's just damaged and unwell, doesn't know her powers, fighting ptsd, unknown cognitive damage and impulse control, isn't always aware what she's doing. she wants to be good in the end, and that was so bitter sweet with that arc ending in her death on the ferris wheel, in the end choosing to save her daughter's life and to take responsibility for her past actions by staying behind on the ride while jess escapes having faced the realisation of their circumstance on the run from police. it was so complicated and heartbreaking, and jess goes through yet more trauma- even though she somehow has a bit of closure? we guess? being able to talk to and say goodbye to mom after sharing memories.

Is that yellow dress at 1:23 the only time Jessica dresses in something other than black leather jacket? The color are so dramatic and she looks amazing. I don't remember what the scene was about.
