Having watched this as a kid, Superman TAS is the definitive version of the character to me. This iteration perfectly encapsulates everything about the character you know and love. Having both Jonathan and Martha Kent around to be there for him is a nice touch. What Darkseid does to him the two-part series finale and it carrying over to Justice League and Justice League Unlimited just expands the characters growth beyond what I thought possible when it first premiered. My favorite episode to date is The Late Mr. Kent. I won’t spoil it, but a killer thought he took out Clark Kent. Now Superman has to use his intelligence, wit, and investigative skils to solve his own murder while trying to prevent an innocent man from the death penalty.

I always thought that Clark had three identities: Clark Kent, Superman & the Last Son of Krypton. Where the Self-Image is Clark Kent, the Ideal Self would be Superman and the Self-Esteem would be the Last Son of Krypton. But I can see how one could mix & match to suit a story's need
@Tyler_W
@Tyler_W 2 жыл бұрын
Same. I always kinda took Superman as Clark's attempt to craft an ideal self that reconciles and harmonizes both aspects of his identity, the best of what it means to be human and Kryptonian. Perhaps subconsciously, he projects that idealizatiom to the world in a way to not just help people, but also to gain some sort of acceptance and belonging.
@sabishiihito

Really, Smallville Clark is who he is, the boy that grew up on the farm with his adoptive parents and learned small town, Midwestern American values. Finding out he was Kal-El from Krypton and having powers didn't change who he was at his core, more like added extra layers to it. "Superman" is just a public persona he employs so he can use his powers to help others while being able to maintain his normal life.

Superman TAS (and beyond) really did him justice. People often focus on the Super part and not enough on the Man, missing the point. They see unstoppable powers and not enough of the person using them, why he uses them, and how they affect him. That Kill Bill speech is actually brilliant, you just need to flip your perspective and look at the character saying it. Bill is a person who kills people for money. Lives in a big house and considers his philosophy and skills so great he takes on students. Couldn't care less about "normal" people. He can't view Superman as a normal person, because he fundamentally believes there are two kinds of people. Masters and cattle. He is the perfect example of why you should pay attention to the subtext of dialogue, not the dialogue. Also, Superman is the mask, Bruce Wayne is the mask.

@@Galvatronover you could say Batman is play acting a bit when he's in full costume, fighting a bad guy. People often say the truest Batman is Bruce Wayne in the batcave. Superman might be true to himself in all scenarios. But he's also getting a lot of attention in costume, and he's aware of it. You could say he's paying attention to his actions when he's in civvies. But that's also when he's comfortable. But when both are in private or with family. Well all people act differently depending on the social circumstances so who knows. I think Clark visiting his parents or with his family or friends is his truest self.

The Late Mr Kent really made me wish Clark Kent became a lawyer later in his life. I kinda love the idea of Superman saving people directly in both sides of his life, especially trying to help avoid death row for villains he brought down Not to mention that it avoids the narrative issue of Clark and Lois doing the same thing in the plot. In this way we can get Clark content AND Lois can create major narrative impact
@DSan-kl2yc

Superman TAS is one my favorite series and the best exemple of how to make adaptation of Superman in more modern world (besides Superman vs Elite and Superman & Lois).Not only the show had adventures that put Superman in situations where he couldn't solve by just using his powers but the series was able to have more mature stories without giving up on what makes Superman so appealing as character for so long (his heroism, kindness and good heart). That's why episodes such as the Darkseid arc are so impactfull in the series, since the show established Clark as this inspiring hero, making it shocking when his conflict with Darkseid reveals this dark side, how this villain is able to get though Superman skin and tempt him into breaking his moral code (showing how Darkseid is the biggest villain in DCAU, since he is able to damage Superman not only in physical level, but emotional one as well)..

@@DarkKnightofAnime oh yes, I definitely agree! I only watched it all the way through for the first time a few years ago when I bought it on DVD. It really is just as good as BTAS or Justice League and really does a great job of balancing Clark and Superman. Not to mention, it does a great job with his supporting cast, and his villains. Most depictions of Superman don't seem interested in any villain other than Lex, but this version does a great job of establishing a solid cast of recurring enemies (plus, Lex himself is amazing, obviously).

Honestly speaking, I prefer the more "grounded" (ha ha) version of Superman presented in TAS. It evokes the feel of the John Byrne and Max Fleischer era of the character. The power creep in the comics is one of the reasons why its hard to put him in a video game, because by now, this is a character who can fly through suns and donkey-punch an entire planet. So it becomes more difficult to put him in situations where there are veritable threats, unless you start giving everybody red sun weapons, kryptonite missile launchers, or Harry Potter wands. That's not to say he should be _too_ weak, either. Which is why I think the Fleischer cartoons and TAS found a good balance, where he was far stronger than any normal human could be, but could still be beaten down or put in a tight spot in the right circumstances. It's a bit absurd, perhaps, but the scene where Fleischer Superman gets knocked out of the sky and into the ground by Not-Lex-Luthor's beam cannon, only to get back up and start punching his way up the beams _as_ they're blasting him is such a great visual that entices the viewer to get invested.

Superman’s ideal reality in JLU is what I love. He just wants to be normal. Love a woman that is human, have a farm and family, have his parents and his home planet back. Not to be worshipped, not to be more powerful, not to be a god. He just wants to be a man.

When I did a first watch of BTAS, I enjoyed it but wasn’t overly impressed. However, once I got to STAS I had so much fun watching it and seeing how well the creators understood the character of Clark Kent/Superman

Very nice introspection. And while S:TAS is certainly the best incarnation of the character to date, how could it not be as the second entry of the DCAU? Nothing these guys put out was anything less than incredible. That it all culminated in Justice League was the crowning achievement for the ages.

I only got into DC recently so OF COURSE I hopped on the Batman train first like everyone else. But as I've learned more about the characters, Superman has absolutely taken my heart. He is my favorite JLA member now by a landslide

Got the bluray set recently. I don’t know how I skipped it originally but it must have been in the overrun of the BTAS and Batman beyond years. Enjoying it and makes me wish all superman interpretations were this good

The thing I like most about this show that I feel is missing from other interpretations is how sassy they made Clark. I'll never forget the episode where he straight up tells Lois he's Superman which explains why he's always the first on the scene and she just shrugs it off

Superman when written as he should be, is really good as a character. he's sadly not done very well most of the time these days. I mean, Batman too, a lot of beloved characters are done dirty by poor writers now. Clark was what superman WANTED to be, what he was inspired by. Superman was inspired by people without his incredible powers, doing the best they can even though they can die a whole lot easier and can't throw skyscrapers. I mean they also aren't usually allergic to rocks, but aside from that.

I grew up reading superman innthe late 80s and the Richard donner movies and the super friends along with the short lived lat e 80s animated series. I even watched the old black and white shows in syndication as a toddler but superman tas is my definitive superman. I also forgot to mention the live action superboy show.

I hate the Kill Bill quote for 3 reasons: 1. It's a villain explaining Superman, which are always casting The Man of Steel in a negative light 2. It's solely for Bill to tell Beatrice Kiddo that she is a killer no matter what she says/does 3. It's so Bill can explain his place within the social pecking order of society...*SPOILER ALERT* Bill thinks he can do/take whatever he wants and pretends to be a harmless human being.

I really enjoyed watching superman animated start to finish Not every episode was a complete banger and the formula. You mention does show through sometimes, but the fundamental understanding of the character is what makes every episode enjoyable and really showed me that superman’s villains are really cool Also, I am many things Kal El, but here I am God shook me and I think about it all the time

I genuinely prefer STAS over BTAS. The joy, fun, and hope is great! The building plot of Darkseid and the fantastic conclusion. The brighter colors and animation is a lot smoother as well. The one thing I wish they would've done is have Clark reveal his identity to Lois.

The “too good to be interesting/relatable” narrative is just for assholes or people with self esteem problems or people than can’t comprehend good storytelling. They need the characters too be flawed so they can feel better about their own weaknesses. I despise that.

I take Bill's speech about Superman as Bill's interpereratation. That's what Bill has to believe about Superman because Bill is ultimately a bad person, and he can't figure out how a man like Superman can actually just be the way he is
