I figured out a way to create and import full patterns into Marvelous Designer using Blender. I wanted to share my discovery and tell you how I want to make this available to everyone.
PatternMaker PRO is coming back!! Tell me what you think about all this in the comments.

Very interesting even though I don't use MD lately but my wife is trying to learn pastern making and sew clothes. Advised o take a look at MD, showed one time a older video of how to sew pants and she really enjoyed it the techniques, learned more then the courses she took in our country.

I don't know if you'll answer this but before buying your book for a year recently, I was manually going in Blender and measuring my character. Took a book on patternmaking and after getting your book that's what you encourage too, so, yes, I would use pattern maker pro every time I am done making my characters measurements. Don't know if you know it but Measure IT is how I measured my character, made it easier.

MD is definitely the fastest and easiest way to measure your characters. I'm glad you found the video helpful.

Thanks for sharing that video. I found a way to put every patterns at once but that means a lot of work fixing the UVs and the mesh have to be clean... However, really all you need to do is import a picture of your patterns as a texture and use it on a square of the same siez. You can then use that as a guide to draw the patterns... Wayyy faster/easier ;)

Have you tried writing a Python addon for Blender that does the same thing as Pattern Maker Pro, but directly with geometry? Each .svg line would be a mesh edge. It's also possible to use curves in 2D to create a flat face.

If you want to release it for free, but have a chance to make money, try the Blender Market, and release the code as open source. That's how the excellent RetopoFlow is managed.
@LoriGriffiths
@LoriGriffiths 5 жыл бұрын
The Blender stuff will definitely be free. Actually, we're talking about running a headless version of Blender on the back end. Then PatternMaker PRO can make the pattern, convert it using Blender and just spit out the OBJ for MD. You won't even have to use Blender at all. That would be very nice and convenient.

I would like to see a tutorial about how to create a bow in MD! Can MD perform thickness on the clothes?
@LoriGriffiths
@LoriGriffiths 5 жыл бұрын
You can't perform a 'tie' of anything in MD. Bows are totally faked with multiple pieces. MD can add thickness to your patterns in the 3D window and for export. You may find it easier to add that thickness in another program though. Thanks for watching.

I'm still working on it. It is HUGE. You can print from a catalog or open patterns in an editor and make changes. If you are familiar with AccuMark you know where I'm going with this. @LoriGriffiths
@LoriGriffiths 5 жыл бұрын
That's very strange. I have never heard of that happening. Maybe it just put it way out of view in the 2D window? Right-click in the 2D background and select Zoom Extents All. If the pattern is there, it will find it.

Wow this is an amazing upgrade! What version of MD is necessary for that feature? I have md 5, I guess I'll have to upgrade but would I guess that's ok. I'd love patternmaker pro for it, and perhaps you should really look into whether you can sell it or give it for free if you'd really feel like doing so (I'd suggest you try to make some money out of this. At least give US the option of giving you money if we so desire, I'd feel bad making money out of YOUR stuff without at least offering something in return ; however that doesn't mean it couldn't also be offered for free for us newbies to experiment). As far as I understood the website you had opened up which included the utility to create the patterns is no longer available but will be again soon enough right? It would be a shame to not be able to use such tool. I am finally getting into a point in my pipeline where I need to model several clothing outfits and had bought MD5 to do so. I hadn't really had the time to take advantage of your website yet but I was certainly planning on subscribing at a certain point (that being pretty soon as of right now). I am working on a character system for a video game and we need lots of clothing sets, although we are licensing some we would like to create quite a few ourselves and a utility like this would streamline our workflow incredibly. I think through websites such as roadgum you should be able to let people donate if they wish so in order to download your add on for Blender, that's how I've bought free addons in the past by contributing as much as I was able to. I think this is probably a good way to make money off of it without commercializing it. However this is seriously worth at least a one time payment of 30 dollars, and that's if you're being modest in my opinion. Please keep us posted this is very exciting.

Thank you for the great feedback. Yes, I did take PatternMaker PRO down quite awhile ago. No one, except me of course, has access to it now. I think I will release it for free and then ask for donations. I've tried that in the past and not many people actually donate, only good people like you do. Since I put this video up we've done some more research and I think we will run a headless Blender on our servers. Then we can do everything in the back end. You would choose a pattern in PatternMaker PRO and then it would just make the OBJ for MD. Super cool!
@EnriquePage91
@EnriquePage91 5 жыл бұрын
Lori Griffiths that is amazing Lori I honestly don't understand how you can do all of this for free. It would be an amazing time saver for all studios, not just indie studios. I'm really looking forward to it and I certainly will put my money where my words are. You deserve a good donation. One side question: Do I need MD8 for the new UV system? Or which version of MD do we need? I have MD5 and so far other than the UV feature I haven't heard of anything that has made me want to repurchase a permanent license (MD is quite an expensive software). Thank you for all your help and info! Really looking forward to seeing more about this. PS: for characters in Unity, check the free asset store plugin "UMA", it's a procedural mesh generator that you can generate custom "races" for so that you can have infinite varieties of characters.
