Great video, and really applicable to a beginner who is price conscious. My only concern would be, if the previous owner used all the good shots in the club(s).

You can get a deal in the clubhouse shop, usually a 10-15 good shot package deal. 🤙

spec is absolutely right. Ping is a great example - don't just go and buy a Ping set of irons and ignore the dot colour - work out what colour dot you are and get the right ones. I'm yellow, so getting red dot would be pointless!

I’m just getting back into golf. I’m going to buy a set of second hand Callaway Hawkeye VFT, they were the best when I last played.

Super insightful, however I have one question. To what extent are deviations from the norm still okay? For example, is 0,5 inches crucial or still viable? Same goes for lie. Can I buy Ping blue dot (+1° lie) or not?

First thing I check is grip. Do the grips need to be replaced? If so, that could cost more than the clubs themselves.

Great advice. As someone who has never really had the budget to buy new clubs or go for a fitting, I have always wondered how much of a difference a fitting would make to my overall game. Anyone got any insight?
@tomstuppence605
@tomstuppence605 3 жыл бұрын
I would say it depends how good you are and how often you play. The gear you use doesn't really matter if you're a hacker like me who plays 4 times a year. But if you play regularly and want to make a meaningful dent in your handicap it might be worth it. Beware though because they will try to sell you expensive clubs. I would go just to get your spec figured out and then see if you can get a better deal elsewhere

@@tomstuppence605 thank you so much for the helpful advice and sorry for the delay in replying. I have recently got back into the game and try to go to the range at least twice a week. I have noticed improvements in my ball striking over the last few months and played my first round in 15 years about a month ago (shot 95). I'm keen to invest a bit of money on some new equipment but was wondering if its better to just get some second hand clubs (that are newer than the ones I have), or to go and have a fitting for some mid level irons. I think your answer pretty much sums up the next step. Thanks again.

If I buy used I’m probably going to replace the grip anyway to match my other irons so that isn’t a huge deal for me. I’m more concerned with spec, groves and overall usage or looks. I tend to pass on clubs that look like nail beaters or have scratches everywhere but that’s just me

OK, is probably the accurate descriptor. I play a set of knockoffs, and I figure they were a good starter set, but hopefully if things stabilize to the point I get to actually work on improving, I'll want to upgrade to better clubs.

@@robertomercer I've seen rick review a few old clubs from time to time, and come to the conclusion the part on the top makes more of a difference than the part on the bottom. which is to say, the club is about 10% and the guy holding it is the other 90%. unless it's a really odd club, that is. for recreational, I get the impression that if a club performs well for you, then it's a good club.

Bought a fake TaylorMade driver a few years ago and it played as long as the real one that a friend had. Same loft, same shaft, etc. I didn't know it was fake until a guy in a pro shop ran the numbers and they didn't match. I still have it as a back up driver and at my level, I seriously doubt that it makes any difference.

First thing to check is are they right or left handed.Golfers have been known to miss this vital point, and it can be annoying if you don't check this at the beginning.

My biggest fear is buying fake equipment. I have become a huge believer in investigating that club or bag I'm looking to buy. Mainly because I cannot go out and buy new. I usually buy clubs that are 2-4 years older. So just be careful when buying on line. Thanks Rick

I just realized (after playing with it since May) that my second-hand driver had a shaft that is 1.5" shorter than my spec. I've been struggling with driving distance all year and I'm inclined to think the shorter shaft had a part in it. My new shaft (from the club manufacturer) arrived a couple days ago and I'll be heading out tomorrow to see if there's a big difference.
@BLUESILV
@BLUESILV 3 жыл бұрын
Shorter should be easier to hit. The catch is finding out where they trimmed it. If they tipped it the shaft could be much stiffer than noted on its spec sheet. I learned the hard way buying a second hand shaft. It was tipped 2” and was stiffer than a TX shaft. I was blocking it all day and found out why. Find the measurement from tip to graphics and see where it was cut.

Always take your second hand clubs to your local professionals. Lofts/ swing weight should be tested to ensure you are playing with right lofts/bounces/lie angles.

Guy - can you ask Rick about regripping clubs and what his advice is ...
@mn240s14
@mn240s14 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not Rick but regripping depends on number of rounds per season. I'm cheap so I only regrip when I start to see wear or if most of my rounds are played in high heat and the sweat has the grips all greasy. No right or wrong answer. Is it on your mind? Regrip. No wear and not on your mind? You are fine. How often are you regripping? If not very often, you should just bring them into a shop and pay a small fee. If you want to regrip more often, you can get a home kit and it really isn't that difficult. You will need a vice (preferably bolted to a work bench), a shaft protector (so the vice doesn't damage the shaft), tape, liquid glue, a pan to catch excess/drip from the glue (paint roller pan works), a grip (obviously), and a box cutter or specialty knife for removing the old grip and tape. Plenty of videos on procedure.
