Since I have good clubhead speed, all the more "helping" irons were going way too far and creating a huge gap at under 140 yds for me. Moving to a muscle backed iron improved my game. Mostly from the extra practice I had to put in, and the motivational boost I got from wanting to master something that was a bit more difficult. Not that I'll ever be a master of the irons, ha ha, but the confidence that they inspire when addressing the ball for a cut or fade as opposed to SGI shovels I've used previously.... Totally worth it. Dropped my HC from 20 to 8 in two seasons of working my butt off. Blade irons with corded grips and no glove is a great teaching tool. Old Titleist 695mb's in my bag, and no notions of swapping them out any time soon.

I'm a 2 hcper and last year, after 10 years of playing, I decided to really invest into my golf for the first time. I spent money from my summer jobs and put them into my first fitting. After fitting, those guys made and sold me ,,my ideal set of new irons" for lot of money. But after 3-4 months of playing them, I just started to feel uncomfortable w them.. they made me shorter, less consistent and also two shafts I broke or damaged just w swinging. I did feel like Lord Voldemord w the Elder Wand. They were amazing clubs, but just didnt listened to me. So after 6 months after fitting I sold them and after that I bought for a 300 dollars a second hand Mizuno JPX 850 forged.. 8 years old, little bit scratched.. but now I'm playing the best golf ever, shooting around par every round and feel so much confidence w my game and w my irons. So I have a very best proof, that second hand clubs could be the best option for you! 😍Have a nice game!

Agree largely. I've been fitted twice .... first as a fairly new golfer, and couldn't get on with my new clubs at all. Then last year, as a still fairly new golfer, but now playing off 14. Again, I was worse off and quite a few ££££ lighter for it. It may work for some people, but it didn't for me. I was also fitted for my driver, but recently swapped into a shaft that a fitter may say isn't right for my swing speeds, but my results are better now. Edit to add: I lack consistency, so seeing me swing for an hour, in a studio, with no consequences and a perfect mat lie .... that isn't how I play and swing on a course.

Here's an opinion that might not be that popular... For a lot of us, "getting fit" indoors in a studio isn't the way to go. I don't know how many people (myself included) I have seen that go get fitted for irons in a studio and they stripe them, then get out to a grass range or play a round and they can't hit them. Turf interaction plays such a huge part of your golf swing. I would prefer to get fit outdoors on grass.

But if the score is secondary to enjoying your golf, or perhaps just a by-product of it, then buying irons that you aspire to play is perfectly OK! I asked my pro if I needed to replace my Ping G5s. His recommendation was to instead replace the Nike fairway woods I had at the time. Got Taylormades off Golfbidder and they were a massive improvement.

I bought some Macgregor's from the thrift store. For $2. Just to mess around with bevause they were so cheap. Fell in love with them all the way around the board and have turned into me set. If it has looks, feel and give you the confidence you need over the ball; you may habe found your irons.

I went from older Cobra Forge Tec black set, to a more forgiving Nike Vapor Flys, man the difference is almost immediate. The 1 thing I dislike bout the Nikes is sometimes I crank one too far (normal 9 iron is 140, sent em 155 sometimes) but the forgiveness is insane

What category of irons, while I work on my swing mechanics, would help me hit more balls in play and have the most fun. Don't care about looks. 7 iron swing speed is 85-95 mph so I don't need the distance from game improvement clubs and I don't want the ball to roll forever but I need MEGA forgiveness on way off center hits, fat shots, thin shots, topped balls. I know club can't fix these things but something to make the mishits go as best as possible. Been thinking of something like the Cleveland halo but might be too long. Eleven hybrids may work but it seems like both of those are for slower swing speeds. Most forgiving clubs for high handicap high swing speeds?

Blades look way cooler but game improvements feel so much better to play (stealth 2s are some of the best irons I’ve played)

Custom fit is great and all but can get very pricey if you are fit into aftermarket shafts. Club champion in the US, you pay for heads, shaft, grips, the build and an option to pure the shafts. A $1200 set of irons can end up double the price.

By pure chance Pete I’ve picked up my 5-GW ZX4’s today. My first set of fitted irons. I’d love to see you do a review on them. Something else I’d like to see which not many content creators seem to have covered is forgiving irons for those with faster swing speeds that aren’t absolute rocket ships. I’ve been playing 2 years, have decent speed but have the inconsistency of a relatively new golfer. At the moment I’m considering after a few rounds of testing of maybe having the clubs de-lofted a little. Not every mid-high handicapper swings a 7 iron at 70-80mph but there doesn’t seem to be much in the way of equipment aimed at these. Especially as more younger people get into the game swing speeds will in general go up

Genuine question but its a piece of metal on a stick, does it actually really matter? I can understand the shafts making more of a difference from swing speeds but the metal is briefly hitting the ball in a set direction so how much of a difference can it really make?

Got the cobra mim tour 4/pw for 500 quid were up against a second hand set of p770s for 650 quid just couldnt justify the extra 150 for aecond hand irons that were outperformed. Only contemplated the p770s due to looks
