Basically 3200MHz being advertised is actually 3200 MT/s which is equal to 1600 MHz so it’s clearer what you’re getting, since DDR means double data rate

This. They way they measure speed currently is actually twice as fast. A 3200mhz ram is actually 1600mhz ×2. But mt/s is the same old mhz we used to see

Ok these 2 nerds above me were quicker than me to the comment but yeah (and why people place rams in a2 and b2 is a type of topology which is known as the daisy chain basically the 2 slots are faster but if all 4 rams are added they are a bit slower while t topology is all the same speed unless ram is different)
@NickDoesCMPE
@NickDoesCMPE 2 ай бұрын
Although this is right the actual read speed is half the "DDR" speed, this is because reading the data actually destroys it. The second (negative) clock edge is used to re-write the data just read (and destroyed by reading). This is because ram uses capacitors to store bits, reading causes the bit charge to be lost. Quick note, Double data rate does apply for writes, but not reads

A RAM module with 1600MHz clock cycle and 3,200MT/s data rate may be advertised as 3,200MHz, which is technically incorrect. The practice has continued to this day. Some manufacturers fear the switch will make their RAM modules look half as fast without any change in specification. This is the easiest explanation I found from Google. Hope this helps.

@@ermac81 Yes 1600MHz Ram with 3200MT/s data rate is advertised as 3200MHz which is incorrect. If they fear about there RAM modules looking half as fast if they told the truth, they should just change MHz to MT/s. Like rather than saying that tthe RAM is 3200MHz(irl it is 1600MHz), They should say the ram is 3200MT/s

latency literally hasn't gone anywhere for decades. When the frequencies go up, so do the latency cycles. Still in the range of about 8-12ns or so regardless of data transfer speeds. Has been that way since first generation DDR (or maybe even "single data rate" SDRAM, which I'm more than old enough to remember). Do something about the latency and you'll impress me. Until then, it's just half a scam.

When DDR was invented the main feature was that it could transmit data twice per clock cycle. So the actual Mhz were effectively doubled. Since there was basically no difference for the longest time manufacturers used the effective transfer rate as Mhz on the box while the actual clock speed was half. With Ryzen it became important again since cpu functions are now based on the actual clock of the ram.

The issue here is that "3200 MHz" runs at 1600 MHz, but as it is double data rate... they just multiply that for 2 to get a bigger number, aka a marketing bs... which isn't 100% correct nor 100% wrong. Using mega transfers is way more honest, imho.

Yeah, MT on ddr5 is limited by processor speed. So it doesnt matter if its 6000mhz, its still only going to have the same transfer rate at the processor clock. In a round about way. I just went through this and proved it to a freind of mine with ddr5 4800 and ddr5 6000 with a I5 13500, the mhz rose, but mts stayed the same....

DDR4 stands for Double Data Rate 4, meaning that on every cycle of the clock (Hz), the module transfers 4 words of data. so, 3200MT/s ddr4 would have the click ACTUALLY running at 1600MHz. but, lower Numbers tends to make companies less profit so they went with advertising it as 3200MHz. glad the shift is being corrected

From what I’ve been reading, basically, RAMs nowadays transfer a megabyte of data per cycle?
@SeeJayPlayGames
@SeeJayPlayGames 27 күн бұрын
no, they transfer 64 bits (8 bytes) per channel on both the rising and falling cycles. But they do it (hundreds or thousands of) millions of times a second. Which ends up being several GIGABYTES per second. For a current example, a 6000MT/s (3000MHz) DDR5 stick could thus transfer 48,000,000,000 bytes per second, or, dividing by 1,073,741,824 (because that's the actual number for a honest power-of-two GiB and I don't care what storage manufacturers think, besides we're talking about RAM anyway)... 44.7GiB/sec. Double that for dual-channel mode, for about 89.4 GiB/sec. Of course, that's theoretical; in practice it's a bit (probably a LOT) less because the CPU has to request and process that data and it can't just burst all day. But that's what a synthetic RAM speed test would say. Keep in mind that there is no storage nor any other devices in your PC that are that fast; that's strictly the CPU memory bus speed, which is (regardless of generation) the fastest link on the motherboard. The example I gave was for DDR5, and earlier versions (DDR4, DDR3, etc) are slower, but that's relative; all of them are blazingly fast when you think about it. Even decade-plus old DDR3-1600 (in dual channel mode) can move 23.8GB (25,600,000,000 bytes)/sec. And yet, they all have about the same latency... but that's another post.
@Donzaloon

Engineer here… it’s because hertz (frequency) doesn’t change unless the source changes. Just like a 60hz TV will always be 60hz, doesn’t mean you are getting 60 fps. Same thing is applied to RAM speed.

If you're buying ram off the big number on the box, you're doing it wrong anyway. You rly wanna focus on what speeds of ram your specific cpu/mobo likes best and then focus on timings. 6000mhz cl36 is slower than 6000mhz cl32, but most ppl don't read the cl number

Basically Hertz is a unit for frequency, which is partly time based, but the problem here is the differential of time to voltage changed (so voltage changes over time). But in the end you want to know the actual speed, so you want to know "data over time", which results in mega transfers. Key for that is, DDR (double data rate, ehich is achieved over using DOUBLE the frequency) which uses the same data lane at a the opposite frequency, so 1600 mhz would actually (important ESTIMATED) be 3200 mt/s and so on. I mean, technically you could also change the GHz on CPUs to Flops, but seriously why should we? :V

DDR means double data rate, when it was introduced for marketing purposes they "doubled" the advetised frequency to make it look better than similar clocked SDR RAM. using "MT/s" instead of straight up lying about frequency prevents a class action.
