@BuntUndStereo8 ай бұрын
Same. The first place I'm usually looking for updates is if there is a pinned comment on the most recent video or a message in the community tab. The community allows sharing images which is nice. Its not the greatest platform for images as I can't seem to properly zoom or enlarge them on mobile. But its better than having to check a different social media platform altogether. I personnally don't use FB and IG only very rarely. Also, Twitter/X is dead to me since Elon happened.

The visual of the lava right up against the wooden fence is just crazy!
@Impassion9 ай бұрын
Whoever built that fence is damn good at their job! 😄
@opalishmoth85919 ай бұрын
That fence legitimately gives me hope Because it proves there is a stage of a flow where it still can creep forward. But the heat is well insulated. And the forward push is weak enough it can’t even push over a humble picket fence, and instead follows the fence line. Granted that clearly happened as the flow stopped, but it still proves an important point. A regular garden fence can act as an effective barrier against slow moving flow front. Which sounds freaking ridiculous and dumb but we can see evidence it undeniably happened. And based on everything I’ve seen with the ingenuity, dedication abs bravery of Icelanders, I know they can use that fact to their advantage.
@1nm18 ай бұрын
@@opalishmoth8591 I think the primary reason the fence "worked" is because the lava vent stopped pretty fast, so by the time the lava reached the fence line it didn't have the weight/pressure of additional (liquid) lava pushing the cooled down lava forward through the fence. Conversely, that is also what makes the current situation so alarming. The town's barriers were ONLY made to stop a SHORT-term lava flow like the previous eruptions, rather than a continuous flow that occurred repeatedly during the "tourist" eruptions to the NW in previous years. Obviously, with the 3+ months they have had those city barriers could (should) be a lot more robust by now, but as to the reasons why that wasn't done, this isn't the time or place for that discussion.

It’s good to hear from you Gylfi. I watched the quarry filling up on Thursday on Isak Finnbogsan’s channel. I may have misspelled his name. He had lost his drone on Wednesday and had to borrow one from a dealer. The weather had the drones using up their batteries in minutes. It was quite spectacular to see the lava actually melt away the ridge above the quarry and finally he was given permission to go to the quarry where he didn’t have to fight the winds. You should watch his last video. I’m happy to see you are back to work again. Bye for now from Ontario Canada 👋🇨🇦👋

Thanks Gylfi. It was very interesting seeing the drone footage from before November. It's amazing how much has changed - cracks through the town, berms all around, lava flowing into town, the quarry now completely filled and then some, and all the land around the berms completely changed. It's amazing that the south coast road survived, especially when we saw on Isak's footage how much lava was on the move when it inundated the quarry. I look forward to you having a chat with Shawn Willsey when he gets back from Europe.
