Fun stuff. Cherry is one of the woods that I work with the most. Because I have Black Cherry growing behind my house. Even before I started turning, I made bowls out of it, and boy was that hard work. Now with the lathe, the bowls are much deeper and rounder. I really enjoy the lathe. Between you and Phil Anderson l, I've learned a lot about this stuff. So thanks for the free education. Of course, I learned even more by making mistakes and having to figure out what to do with them. But having examples on KZbin is such a blessing.

Good job, buddy! This Cherry gave you some resistance but, you overcame it like a champ! I have a Cherry bowl coming up and it has some of those same dark areas. I've turned a lot of Cherry but never seen that before and now yours has it, too. Almost looks burned. Anyway, I really like the live edge on this one and the finish is great as always! The crotch feather is another great feature, too! Just a really nice turning, my friend, keep'em coming! 😀 Phil

It's amazing how the figure of the wood can be turned and dislay feathers, faces, animals, etc . This bowl is no different. I like turning cherry and still have some in the wood pile under a tarp. Some of it has crotches that might allow for interesting turning in another week or so. Tell the wife to make more room on the display shelves.

This piece was very hard and cutting across the crotch grain can be a lot of fun (work} Some times I will bring a piece in and set it in my computer room. That's a lovely bowl. Where do you find the space to display them all. I only get small bits of tree so make small bowls and I have to hide them in boxes. Can't bear the thought of selling them so end up inviting friends to rummage in the boxes and take a few that they like !

What is the advantage of the negative rake scrape over a positive rake scraper?

A negative rake scraper is less likely to get a catch. Where as a scraper just ground on the bottom will catch much easier as the location of the edge is very important.
