I posted this video years ago as a quick video showing a cool wood technique, but it is only recently that so many comments have been left about the music. I think a lot of viewers don't understand that this is a satirical protest song by Pete Seeger from 1964. It is a warning about how we brainwash our children. Everything the boy has "learned" is a lie. I think it is even more appropriate today: the government is NOT always right.

@truebluekit10 жыл бұрын
sausagebob grett The song was written as an anti-war song. But I believe that Steve chose it - brilliantly, I must say - not to remark about war, but on how we are deceived by others, and by ourselves. Rather, the song is about the lies - or rather, gross inaccuracies - that we grew up with, that we are surrounded by, that we repeat to ourselves and to others, to the point that we unthinkingly accept them as them as truth. Sometimes we even glorify the very people who lie to us. Even worse, sometimes we believe them even when we can't hear them. If we were to believe everything we are told, just as the "boy" in the song believed, then: - Soldiers rarely die in battle, even on the losing side - Policemen and officers of the law are perfect human beings, free from human flaws - Justice is always upheld without fail, and that crooks are not allowed on the streets - Our governments and leaders never lie, not about that woman they never slept with, not about weapons of mass destruction, or who knows about what else - It is impossible to drive a nail into a block of wood without leaving an entry hole Yet, the vid shows us how to drive a nail into a block of wood without leaving an entry hole. In my opinion, the invaluable lesson here is that: Is the truth that we know really the truth? Question and think about what we believe, then act, and maybe we could achieve what we had always thought impossible.

+Angel Diaz I have been learning to speak spanish and this makes no sense. very good you job, if you see that you like and enjoy what you do. Could I get a better translation please?
@jaybird18049 жыл бұрын
+Colebug99- Muy bueno tu trabajo literally means: Very good your work. Or as we would say in english: your work is very good. There appears to be an error in the second part. Ves should be ve. Se ve doesn't have an exact translation but it could be: it appears or it looks like or it shows. The latter half is also a little redundant. It translates as: It shows that it pleases you and you enjoy what you do.

Very clever. Reminds me of when I learned how to make boomerangs and wooden barrels. I knew wood becomes highly flexible when steamed, but I never suspected boiling it could let you compress it. Seems counter intuitive as wood resists compression very well, and water is non-compressible. Seems like boiling the wood would make it harder to compress, not easier. What really threw me for a loop is that the process also lets you decompress the wood, returning to its original shape. I wouldn't mind learning the science behind how this is even possible. I suppose the cells/fibers act like a sponge, becoming rigid when dry, but flexible when wet, and as you compress them, water freely exits. Probably more to it than that, but that's my guess as to why it works.

The volume of comments and likes in this thread that didn't recognize Tom Paxton wrote this song in protest at American society, is doing my head in. Go listen to another of Tom Paxton's songs "Daily News" and you'll maybe better understand where Paxton stood.

+DN 13 What did you learn from news today, Dear little boy of mine? I learned that the Clintons never told a lie, I learned that soldiers seldom die, I learned that everybody's free, And that's what Maddow said to me, And that's what I learned from news today, that's what I learned from news. I learned that Mexicans aren't my friends, I learned that prejudice shouldn't end, I learned that Mexico will pay for the wall, Even though we armed their druglords all, And that's what I learned from Fox today, That's what I learned from Fox I learned the president we must fight; He's always wrong and never right! Crime and riots are alright; If we're protesting the racist right, And that's what I learned from news today, That's what I learned from news I learned that war is not so bad, I learned about the great ones we had. We bombed up Syria and Iraq And some day I might get my chance. And that's what I learned from Times today, That's what I read in Times I learned the Atom bomb was good; Remember Pearl Harbor we always should. I learned trade sanctions weren't why the Japanese said we must fight, And that's what I learned from news today, That's what I learned from news I learned the Russians are just as mad; so we should sanction them just as bad. I learned that Putin hacked our votes; though to Britain we traced those nodes, And that's what I learned from news today, That's what I learned from news I learned that whistleblowing is a crime; Snowden and Assange should do some time, Telling the truth is not okay; if it exposes the American way. And that's what I learned from news today, That's what I learned from news I learned crude oil is in high demand; we should drill for it, water be damned. Native Americans should accept their lot; give thanks for the turkey they have got. And that's what I learned from news today, That's what I learned from news

It's because no other country has the level of protest against their own country in music like the US does so they cant comprehend that it's a protest song.

I met Pete in the 70's at the National Folk Festival. I was a volunteer and it was in a small room where the performers hung out between sets. Very approachable and down to earth. He was talking about in the good old days the food at State Fairs and such would be corn on the cob, ect. Anyway, being part of the folk scene back then we all would gave understood that this was a satirical song about the government and the perils of trusting our leaders at face value. He would be appalled at how we have become sheep and the threat of loosing our hard won Democracy. Folks, this did not happen overnight just like fascist Germany did not occur in a short span. This has been a well calculated demise of this Great Experiment that begun over 200 years ago and all of us are to blame for our complacency.

Dude, the vibe of this music takes me back to living in a little house in California back in 2006-7, visiting my grandparents with their massive jukebox, eating pop tarts, drinking chocolate milk, chasing the dog in the backyard. I miss those days, I'm glad that my grandparents are still around, at least for a while longer I hope...
