Hey, so I just tried doing this with very hard bots and I ended up making it to top 3. Very hard bots aren't able to expand as fast since they are actually good. So if you can get a good bit of free land then you can be competitive. I tried doing a single pixel off of Indonesia. The main issue is that if you don't become the biggest in Asia then you are toast. That's how I ended up dying. The best place to start and be able to take over is probably the Americas. Just wanted to let you know so you can practice.

The thing with bots is, don't pray that you aren't attacked. Have anyone else around the dangerous bot have lower troops than you. They will always target whoever has less troops.

I tried this with very hard bots, 512 players. Took a while but I won. The start that ended up doing it was an Indonesia start where I got a good number of big islands in there to myself then got Japan. Took over cheap territory from weak guys in Asia and Australia. Took over Australia. Then took over Asia and the rest is history.

I managed to pull this off on very hard. Here's my summary how it worked. First of all "every pixel counts" is a false. I'm not sure of the % but you'll be burning extra % of troops whenever you send, so those single pixels mean it takes way too long to get into solid numbers. Only focus on bigger islands. Small and single pixels only to setup a landing. Just don't land anywhere you'd be neighbouring a bot. Near Indonesia looks like the best start. North America might be good also but then you're really far from Asia so that's a risk. Also because of the extra % of troops used for each send keep that at minimum. So don't spam that send button but think ahead instead and take your time. Once you've gotten as much land as possible, then comes the hardest part. What you need to do now is: nothing. Just wait up until you get near red interest (100x your pixels) and only then start your conquest. If there's a chance to make a killshot on a bot that doesn't take too much of your population that should be ok. Other that that, just wait (you need around 2x of the enemy population to take it out in one attack, maybe a bit more). The idling part might take up to almost 2 min so it's hard not to do a thing in that time. Once you're all set and ready for the attack, just make sure that you don't land anywhere the bots (after the one you take out) outnumber your troops. They like to attack the weakest so if you ever get into that position it's gg. That's why the idle part and not taking single pixels before attacking is super important. So always try to make sure you got the highest pop or that your neighbours have a weaker target than you. For the attack, imo the patient cycle is the best. Make a send, wait until you're near red interest -> repeat. If you're taking Australia first you should look for opportunities for a killshot. Otherwise grind them down evenly. You want at least two of them on low numbers before taking them out. If there's a weak one and stronger one and you take out the weak, all of a sudden you'll be sharing an island with a bot and it's 100% sure it starts attacking you. So grind down the strong one and then take them both out. Same thing when landing on Asia. You don't want to land in a place where you corner a bot so you'd be it's only target. As for the targets, the ones you can take out with a few attacks are nice. The best ones though, are big ones with a low troops/pixels ratio. So if you got a weak small target and the crown with decent troops but nothing too crazy compared to you, then go for the crown. I'm going with a bit of a "tunnel vision" but if you're a fast multitasker you could go for several targets simultanously. Just keep the cycle, always stay close to red interest and repeat over and over.

Alright I know I just commented yesterday but I beat the challenge on Very Hard! Here's my strategy if you want to read it, though if you'd like to figure out how to beat it yourself then you can ignore it and just know that it is 100% possible! - I actually started on a 1 tile island off the coast of Borneo, after restarting a few times to make sure there were no bots on that island. - I seem to get the best early expansion by starting out with sending half my troops, then gradually reducing down to a quarter after every send, so that my last attack on Borneo used a quarter of my troops - My path was to first take the larger unoccupied islands in the west pacific, so things like Java, Sulawesi, Hainan and Taiwan, north into Japan and Sakhalin, and then east to New Britain and New Caledonia, as well as a few more in Indonesia and the Philippines. Sometimes New Zealand is really weak or even empty, which along with having more angles of attack for New Guinea or Australia is the main reason for taking New Britain and New Caledonia. Sri Lanka is also good if it's empty. - At some point during the next steps I sent boats to islands off Madagascar and Antarctica, so that I could quickly attack them later. I did this once I had enough troops that I could send a small enough amount not to notice that would still make it to the islands. Also, keep an eye out on your islands near Asia: sometimes the AI likes to send a boat there, you should kick them out or they'll start fighting you, draining precious resources. - Once I had all the free land, I kept an eye on Australia but mostly focused on New Guinea and Sumatra. Usually, the Sumatra bot will attack Asia and get crushed so taking over the island will be a cakewalk. New Guinea is also not too bad, there's usually a couple weak bots duking it out to scoop up. - Next is Australia, pretty standard stuff, target the weakest ones and such. Once it was just me and one other, I found it to work best if I am more aggressive. Previously I was waiting for the numbers to turn red to attack in Australia, but taking over the rest of Australia quickly seems to outweigh the benefits of saving troops. - From there you should be in a decent position as if it was a regular game, my one tip is to avoid the strongest enemy AI! Better to race them to gobble up the weaker ones than make yourself a target. That's the benefit of having Madagascar, Sri Lanka, the Asian islands, and something off the coast of Antarctica - plenty of options for attack!

I beat it too, but I used Canada's islands. Hard and Harder were a cakewalk using this spawn, but very hard took me 2 tries to beat. You actually get the crown on like 1 minute using that strat but its risky as theres a bot that always attacks you at the start and on very hard he has 8 times your troops. But it seems bots are not coded well enough to properly boat to kill an easy target and the bot just lets you live and you actually have enough free land to have the crown even after the bots attacks at the start, and after you finish saving up you just have a very good position, should still be about top 5 when you finish saving up for red interest then you can just eat everyone. Also I tried your strategy after reading this comment, this seems to be a slower but safer and more consistent strategy as there are actually zero bots that will attack you and you can just get more islands, and again because bots suck at boating a big island in Indonesia is just free and doesnt get taken by any bot in the long time it takes to get there from Japan.

Neat idea! Just to throw in what happened when I tried it, so far I've managed to win on Harder difficulty. As far as I was able to see in testing, your interest income outpaces your per-cycle income by the second cycle, so pretty much expanding normally at the beginning is best if you have a decent chunk of land free of bots. The way I won on that difficulty was spawning on a 1 tile island off the coast of Japan, being lucky and having no one on Japan or Sakhalin, and taking first those 2 islands, then boating down with as few troops as I could to Taiwan, Hainan, and the Philippines. But only the big islands!! Island hopping on the little ones is not worth it. After that I just looked for the weakest people, I think I ended up starting with Asia both from the north and the south when I saw weak enemies, but I think taking the big islands of Indonesia and then Australia could also work because it seems like Australia usually still has fairly weak bots in the mid game. Of course some of that may be bad strategy for Very Hard as I haven't beaten that yet, but it's what I've figured out so far! I really don't know if Very Hard is possible at all though. I think as far as viable starting points, Japan may be the best because you can get a decent chunk of land while remaining a low priority target for the bots, and at the same time covering a huge amount of area to maximize opportunities to attack weak bots. But I think Indonesia or the Canadian arctic archipelago might also be able to work. Finally, if Very hard is possible, I really doubt that it's possible without a lucky start that has plenty of room to expand without bots! So it's probably best to restart at the beginning until your desired island chain is free of bots if you use this strategy.

Very hard bots on islands sometimes uses its troops wrong, you can use this to your advantage. If you chose your spawn close to main land, quickly boat to main land this will give you a normal start. Very hard bots first attack the lowest troops, this will give you time for getting your army bigger.

I can get to first place but it's hard to expand onto the major continents because the very hard bots will target only you and ignore everyone else even if it kills them. So even tho I make it to first place I get stuck sitting on the islands why everyone else gets to expand and eventually I lose. Maybe if I could get to first place with a major gap it would work but that's impossible for me.

so i took me like 10 attemps but i did it. I had to wait for a indonesai spawn next to the big roundish island when it has no bots. the conquer all free islands wich made me one of the biggest players. i had to wait for troops to fill up and then invade north east russia and china. i tried the same thing while going to australia instead but that dosent work out bc its to slow. once i got my foothold in russia whilst beeing one of the top 3 i was able to win but it got very dicy at thre end since i was loosing 1 v 2 and had to almost full send the smaller one and then abuse bots not beeing able to send big into me so i can regain troops. the winning game took me 25 mins of wich 10 mins was just going from 52% to 99% vs a single bot
