Swamp coolers are made to humidify and cool a space, AC systems are made to dehumidify and cool a space. Not sure if that matters where you live
@IrrationalDiversions3 жыл бұрын
Ours in AZ did't really add humidity, because it cooled via evaporation. It was good until the ambient humidity rose in late July or August. They work best in arid environments.

We had a friends wedding in our backyard. Two weeks before the wedding I broke my right wrist (my dominate) in a hare scramble. In that two weeks, I remodeled the master bathroom, built a elevated heavy timber deck to the second story the width of the house, and while they were setting up for the wedding, I took a sawzall to the wall to install a sliding glass door so the bride could walk out on to the deck for her grand entrance. It's amazing what you can do with the right motivation. My motivation was fear of all the women involved in the wedding, and what they would do to me if I didn’t get it done.

The cooler didn't look very old. I lived on Phoenix for three decades and they were great! The only time that you were miserable was the monsoon season. It got sticky quickly. Some of the builders back in the day had combined central and evaporative air, and it all shared the ducts. And it wasn't just blue collar, high end homes where Johnny Carson was a neighbor even used swamp air. Great for the antique wood furniture and skin.

For patches/spot repairs I usually see some kind of waterproof underlayment used...but I'm in Florida where the consequences are pretty high if you don't
@TheSidneySmith3 жыл бұрын
as he said at the end of the video, a full tear off/replacement is coming in a few months. This is a temporary repair that will hold for that long. However, his nail placement on the shingles would have them flying off down here in Florida. There's a nail line on the shingle for a reason - I will give kudos for 6 nails though.
@HomeWorkouts_LS3 жыл бұрын
As an architect - waterproofing is required across America even in dry locations. So I completely agree with you but he said this was very temporary at least. 🤷🏻♀️
@rogermccaslin59633 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I was wondering about that. I would think a layer of felt would be the bare minimum before the shingles went on, regardless of when the new roof is scheduled for.

I took mine out 7 years ago when I purchased my Denver home…the copper tubes feeding the swamp cooler flooded from attic to basement and caused major water damage to the 1955 beautiful plaster work. I had to re-plaster 2 bedrooms, ceilings, and stair-walls . Forced air was the better choice.

I used to love in the desert and had a two stage swamp cooler installed that makes the old ones seem useless. They used a real thick honey comb paper excelsior about a foot thick s I recall and only intake through the back end. Saved me a ton of money in the summer time and worked well on all but the hottest days. They don't stink like the old style swamp coolers at least not in the desert where I lived.

I also live in AZ. We have a cooler that we run when the dew point is below 45* It maintains the temperature in the house around 74-79* when it is 100* outside. At night it gets to be 65-68* in here. Nothing better than fresh air and the front door open while the neighbors walk by wondering how we can afford to have the front door open all the time.
@mikefeddersen2476 Жыл бұрын
I loved the "fresh air" comment, my parents house when the swamp cooler was running, the styrofoam cups in the kitchen cabinet would have smog soot stuck to them. Those swamp coolers really worked well though, my parents had a handy man install vents above windows to have the hot air exit there when the swamp cooler was running.

A concrete company I worked for used a truck trailer off it's axles as storage for new tires and to lock up the tools. They installed a two speed swamp cooler in the end of it, nearly freeze you out on high. 😊

I checked the chart (psychrometric) and it looks like a climate control goal of 75F, 50%RH can be achieved by a swamp cooler in an environment as high as a 62F dew point. Of course our bodies' perspiration systems are equivalent to swamp coolers. You could drink the water instead of feeding it to your cooler to stay cool, but you might also do this to protect your furniture or art pieces from drying out. In a similar way, you might leave a kettle on your stove in the winter to prevent drying out the house.
@matthewsalmon20133 жыл бұрын
Apology, that's not actually correct. At 75°F 40%RH the wet bulb is 60°F (same enthalpy), but the dew point is 50°F (same water content). If we had hotter, drier air (appropriate for our swamp cooler) with the same or lower wet bulb temperature (~enthalpy), then the dew point would also be lower. Looking at dew point maps, all I can figure is that he's in the Western US.

Here in NC swamp "coolers" would only make the mold grow year-round A dehumidifier makes it feel 10- 20 degrees cooler in the 90% humidity we have from june to sept
@adlibrium3 жыл бұрын
I totally agree, they only really work in low humidity environments, whereas a typical forced A/C I think will work anywhere. It may be that these millennials he is complaining about come from a different climate zone where swamp coolers aren't used. It's also possible they just don't mind the extra expense and just want a reliable temperature control option regardless of the humidity.

Love your videos but next time cut the shingles back and install them properly. The bottoms of those shingles will not adhere properly to the shingles underneath. That type of shingle needs to be installed on a 45 no less than 5 5/8 inch spacing in the water lines. If you're going to do what you did there use some poly, silicone or roof tar (mastic) underneath the bottoms where the tar line is so the wind can't pull them up. Awesome job and videos brother keep it up!

So they didn’t want the uber chic rain shower? You only shower when it rains. Great video. I used to work on a building that had the swamp cooler for the commercial kitchen… it did a great job of cooling things down and equalizing the pressure in the kitchen… when it worked. I'd have to have it ripped off the roof too. I really hate the extra humidity, as it pretty much cancels out any comfort gained by the small temperature drop, as they can only do so much. They also tend to set off my allergies by sucking in all the outside air, rather than circulating it through a high grade filter. I also don't like how maintenance intensive they are, and then having to climb onto the roof to do all of that just makes it all the more agonizing. I know A/C costs more to install and run, but arguably its a better thing for indoor air quality.

And how great it is that being modular systems allows you to add more panels over time, as your needs & budget allows. Nothing new, but a good reminder that they're definitely the future of safe energy if we can keep the threatened fossil fuel & nuclear power companies out of our hair.
