I really like this video! It's true that people don't often speak like beginner language textbooks. It's helpful to know many ways to say the same basic things.

Nice video. At this time, I understand very few Mandarin words and phrases and can speak almost no Mandarin. I will be going to Guangdong in a month where Mandarin and Cantonese will both be used. When I speak to Chinese people in English, I talk very slowly and try to use words they might understand. It is important to use this approach when communicating. Good thing I am always with Chinese people. The few times I am alone in public, it is the children who run up to me trying the English they learn in school. Wish me luck.

In English, besides: "What do you do for work?" we could equally ask: "What do you do for a living?" In Chinese, perhaps this could be: 你靠什么谋生?or 你以什么为生? But I'm not sure.

Thank you for making these videos. My students love it. I know some Chinese teachers who are still teaching in traditional methods, but more and more teachers are leading to teach authentic and practical materials. You are one of the great teachers! I've been following you since you just started this channel. Now I also make some videos, but more Vlog styled, showcasing Chinese life and culture.

Hi 说说! Inspired by your videos filled with humor I finally collected courage to start posting using 中文 as a beginner. Short clips what I do after school for example. My teacher from Jilin helps me and a friend recommends to tag posts, so others who also learn mandarin can find me. I would like to ask you if you would recommend any tags besides #学中文 or #学习中文... I am a beginner but don't want to sound like one in tagging 🤭 Maybe consider making a video?🙏🏻 🤓 I think a lot of us would like to start communicating online but have it hard to brake the ice of embarrassment, hihi 😅

this is a great lesson, very welcome to provide some relief from the formal correct and pretty much irrelevant language teaching that makes learners feel they are wasting their time. if you want to talk to official diplomats then that formal stuff is fine, but if you want to talk to real people and get stuff done, you have to listen to what people actually say. one problem in china is this varies tremendously from place to place. what teacher is teachng here i am going to say is very generally southern (a terribly broad generalization but it kinda works). @5:50, where are you from? i just say, ni nali ren, and when i am in a situation with all chinese people (like i usually am) they implicitly understand i know they are from china, so there's no confusion and they answer the question naturally

Is a Chinese name commonly asked for? With Koreans I’ve been asked for a korean name.. but not often and it is never really used (but I befriended who asked ha so my real name makes sense). How does it work with Chinese ? How would I pick? Haha maybe a girl’s name in a drama. Got a couple ideas then.. But who would use it and how often? Also we’re you really born in 88? I thought at least you were born in mid or late 90s ha (i was born in 95 haha). Anyway thanks! I really like this channel. Very helpful!

People in Taiwan also have trouble with l and n. One time the kindergarten class was going on a field trip and I asked where and they said "Tailan" and I asked if they all had passports. It is also a problem when they sing the alphabet. Instead of saying L M N O P they say L L L O P which is really annoying and hard to fix.

How do you say enjoy your meal in Chinese? It says [請享用 qing xiang yong] on google but it says Xiangyong just means "enjoy", there is no meal in that expression. Do people in China not wish each other to enjoy their meal?

a little trick i like to use when confronted with these kind of situations is to instead of looking for a translatoon, i look it up as if i was a chinese person learning that other language. i looked up "buen provecho 是什麼" on google and found a chinese page that said " 好好享用、請慢用!"
