I would have enjoyed the movie more if they found a way to basically extended the Monopoly scene to the rest of the film, just have the entire thing be Hugh Grant talking around in charming theological circles while being creepy and not even getting too action oriented. Make it a one room location, entirely dialogue oriented. Once the movie progressed passed those 2 ominous doors, I felt the writing seemed to lose it's way a little. I found myself disappointed in the outlandish reveals, as I felt Grant's character had been written too cleverly up until that point to warrant such a ridiculous motive/plan. I enjoyed the movie as a whole but adored the first half and found the second half just decent.

I was drawn in by their conversation. It is compelling to see how myths and religious origins are related and derived from each other. But Grant was not only discussing religion to challenge his guests, but to have them doubt their beliefs and feel lost. Then when they were in despair, he directed them face first into his trap. Then he will use them in future traps with new guests, and so on….

We got plenty of horror movies filled with gore, blood, and chases. It's so refreshing to see more psychologically mentally challenging horror that A24 usually nails. Need more! Sister Paxton was my favorite & stole the show for me. She was genuinely bubbly & fun!🙏🥰🌟 Mr. Reed: "With great power, comes great responsibility." Sister Paxton: "Spider-Man!"😂

As much as the thought of a dialog driven horror movie would instinctually turn some hardcore horror fans off, it works so well in this one. This was a film that I was really looking forward to, and I wasn't disappointed. It grabbed me early on and never let go. I agree that I could not picture anyone, but Hugh Grant in that role. I wasn't familiar with Sophie Thatcher or Chloe East going into this, but they were both amazing. Great review, as always.

Really looking forward to seeing this. I'm always fascinated by any atheist vs. theist dialogue. BTW, for a great religious horror thriller which kind of flew under the radar a few years ago, I highly recommend St. Maud. Well worth seeking out.

I was waiting for you to review this one, Marianna. You have to give credit to Scott Beck and Bryan Woods as they wrote an amazing screenplay here and Hugh Grant, along with Sophie Thatcher and Chole East did an excellent job with their performances. Religion horror films are killing it this year with this one along with The First Omen and Immaculate.

I was blown away by Heretic. I wasn’t a huge fan of Beck and Woods previous films (apart from Haunt) but they did a great job, it has an awards worthy performance by Hugh Grant and the movie reminds me of The Wicker Man (the original) which I also love

It was straight up revelation of the method when it comes to sun gods and religious control. As someone who’s studied many man made religions over decades, it was great to see it brought to mainstream.. the only thing is most people don’t have the attention span for dialogue anymore, so sadly most will miss the deeper themes.

I said the same exact thing about John Kramer, aka Jigsaw! I love a philosophical villain! lol! I could actually see Tobin Bell a few years ago playing this part, but Hugh Grant was phenomenal. I haven't been scared watching any horror movie in decades! I loved this so much! So suspenseful.

I've watched this movie a few times now and I can't see Hugh\ Mr Reeds hair any wetter to get the bike lock at any time from when he greeted them at the door to the first room where he was talking about polygamy to the 2 rooms of belief and disbelief so that's a lie or wasn't shown on camera very well as his clothes didn't even seem damp show me his damp clothes and his wet hair>??? Also without the door interruption that was outside his control who would he have been able to perform his magic trick in the basement???? Nobody mentions this at all!!!!

He also wasn’t gone from the missionaries long enough to have performed the tasks claimed, nor could that floor trap door trick work in the silence of the room without the gals being aware.

I literally just saw it! The dialogue with the discussion of religion was incredibly interesting and there are unsettling moments at times. The 3 leads were great. I first saw Sophie Thatcher in the incredibly underrated sci-fi movie from 2018, Prospect. She was so good in that movie with Pedro Pascal who is in a supporting role. I don’t think they needed Topher Grace for the role in this movie, but it was so small it didn’t matter.

The very first scene made me think that the subtext of the whole movie was about sexual gratification. Barnes knows something to be true, then Paxton is "converted" because Barnes saved her with her actions and words. "Does size matter" is substituted for belief vs disbelief and the truth hurts. I thought of a title of a prince song came to me in the cage scene. Antagonist's bringing up polygamy then the multiple victims that are present begs the question of size equals control. Primates are not monogamous, the position of alpha is presented as the center of the horror, yet the protagonists seek a spiritual alpha.

Without having seen it yet, the Hugh Grant character to me seems like one Alfred Hitchcock would have had in one of his movies. An individual who to the outside world seems well mannered and ingratiating, but there within lurks the darkness of his soul.

Unrelated comment, but I have heterochromia and my left eye is almost exactly the same as yours! Split down the middle with brown on one side and blue on the other. On a more related note…I just got home from seeing this film and absolutely loved it! Definitely worth a second watch

I really liked the movie, but Sister Barnes killing Mr. Reed after having her throat slice earlier in the movie was a bit unbelievable for me; Sister Paxton herself should have finished the job. Still, very good movie I'll probably rewatch sooner than later. 😍 One final note, the acting in this movie is very, very good! 🙏

I just saw this today! and I really liked it. I found it to feel alot like Speak No Evil, while being a completely different story, and in my opinion a better movie. I would still put Kinds of Kindness as my favorite movie I've seen this year, and Heretic and the Substance neck and neck for 2nd. Then I'd have a battle between Blink Twice and Speak No Evil after that, but I dont see every movie just the ones that look interesting to me.

I saw this Thursday and really enjoyed it. Imagine building a home with the sole purpose of entrapping and manipulating missionaries in mind. One thing did bother me early on is I felt the missionaries were experiencing a level of discomfort too early over things Mr. Reed was saying to them in their initial conversations. I don’t feel that discomfort was warranted yet. He seemed to me to be saying things that were innocent and appropriate for the discussion.

I found the intellectual banter grow tedious very quickly and it never grabbed me after the initial start of the horror. I don't think the movie commits to its own ideas and the script reflects a certain insecurity. Personally, I found Don't Breathe to be much more thrilling.
