I feel like people are focusing WAYYYY too much on the point of the movie, HOWEVER, we are missing out on the point that the execution was absolutely flawless, just the right dose of elements, from start to finish, perfection. It had a start and it had an end, no plain moments, a little bit of horror, laugh, gore, body whatever, entertainment, we should respect and commend that.

I struggled to draw anything profound out of this film. I left the viewing feeling like I'd just watched an elaborately produced bikini commercial. The film doesn't say anything particularly interesting about desire, age or femininity. I really detest films which shove lots of flesh down your throat, and then pretend to have some grand pretext for debauching your imagination. 'The Substance' is a very close cousin of the 'X/Maxxxine' movies, which combine absolutely irrational scenarios with a script that has been lifted from an 'Archie' comic. The fact that some of this film's most ardent critics are intelligent young women, really says something too. If you look at Rodin's famous sculpture of the aging beauty, it says infinitely more about women and ageing, than this cheap sex-ploitation film. Read a Charlotte Bronte novel, if you really want to understand womanhood.

Good review. Small note: The top billed cast member can't "steal the show". Demi Moore IS the show. It could be stolen from her by somebody else. But it wasn't.

This is a great review so thank you. In my opinion this movie fails because the writer is politically illiterate. It just seems like so much essential context is missing in the film that it reflects a missing understanding from the writer in terms of how to convey and communicate its primary message. That’s why it does it poorly. Edit. I just have to ask considering all the gravity in the film why is Joe “getting so hard” seeing bullets flying in the night? Highlighting the severe consequences of war seemed to be the point of the film so why is it made in this scene to be so thrilling rather than fellow Americans dying?

Very fair review. However the “bad” things you describe (stilted acting, superficial dialogue) take on a different context if you reinterpret everything (except for the first and last scenes) as satire. It is satirizing the whole “great men need to save us from other great men” myth he sees in current USA. And some of that is self-deprecation too, since he often poteyaed himself in that bad boy genius role. The only genuine serious part is his comment at the very end which is an earnest call to humankind. The use of satire to make a serious point is rather ingenious imo.

Women are more brutal to each other about beauty standards than men. The beauty industry is directed towards women, many men are oblivious and/or don’t care about the beauty industry. I don’t really believe that most men want the women in their lives to be obsessed about beauty and undergo the procedures and injections that they do. I find most of the beauty industry grotesque and do not appreciate being blamed for it as a part of the “patriarch”. I find women’s insecurities and aggression towards each other more to blame. Looking your best is about taking care of your appearance and respecting it. I see many women today start injections when they are 20 and they don’t need it. When they are 30 they will look like blowup dolls. Blaming the patriarchy is easy. Listening to wisdom is hard.

I honestly don’t think they could’ve used anybody but Demi Moore for Elizabeth. I feel like She (Moore) is already succumbing to those standards while somehow still looking incredibly good. Thus, the movie taking that one step further is brilliant imo.

Why did Demi Moore's character continue on with the substance if she wasn't able to enjoy or recall the new youthful body experience? There was nothing in it for her other than her waking up being old, and it made her character's motivation very unrealistic.

Hello Marianna. I would like to put in a request to see some form of receipt or evidence that your fund raising for Ukraine is all legitimate and above board. And that the funds raised have actually gone where they should. This of course should be no problem if all is in order as it should be. Please advise how I can access this information ? Many thanks 🙏

I really loved the idea of this film. And I think it was very appropriate that a “twink” gives her the information. The gay community is very toxic in the vanity and age category. This movie hit close to home, but also made me appreciate myself more.

I saw it yesterday and thought it was pretty intriguing. Today I had a friend watch this review so I wouldn’t have to. It’s a visually stunning, wildly ambitious, very abstract & expressionist film that some love and some hate. I think most people even interested will never get an informed opinion until they see it, I would recommend people keep it in their consideration set. It was not what I expected based on the thrashing its gotten from certain circles. But this film will be watched and discussed for a long time, probably a cult classic in the making, and from this director, if you reject it out of hand it’s probably not for you. But the curious should see it. And many may need to see it twice.

Interesting what you said about all the actors being in different movies. That's a bit like real life isn't it, we're all trying to create the movie of our own life, be the main character etc., not caring very much what movie those around us think they're in. Might go see it after all on that basis.

The feeling I get when I look at the trailers of this movie is basically it's the Blade Runner of its time. Let's not forget that film was misunderstood greatly upon release and met with indifferent and ambivalent audiences and critics. Pretty abstract for its era as well and now it is uttered in the same breath as citizen kane. Just wait. This film too will have its day

So many critics are getting the point of the movie wrong. The movie is not about Joker as a person but more as an idea. The musical moments were made for our characters not us. Gaga is doing a very different interpretation and I dug it

In the first Joker, he didn't have grand scheme to become an icon by doing stuff, it's luck, and in the second one he realizes that he isn't an icon, his character is. He's quite literally the definition of a sad clown, so either he chooses to hide behind the mask or be death row Arthur. I think it's quite character driven, him and Lee.

Ok I did watch, and my answer what will I grade this movie 🎬 1 to 10 the answer you are correct I saw at the end of your video the answer and I will give it's a 4 no I didn't expect this I thought it was going to be very almost like the Joker 1 but darn this movie part 2 was going in a very great direction after I saw Joker 2 Terrible 3 things terrible begin 1. The start of the movie was terrible. 2. Middle of the movie almost flashback in all different scenes. 3. And the ending terrible these three things mess up the movie 100% percent guaranteed mess it up. And that's why my answer I will put this movie in 4 of stars 🌟 no good Joker 2 Failed it could have been a great movie 1 to 10 a 9 star, but this is what I saw terrible but that's my opinion

It's a 1960s avant-gard movie, released to a 2024 audience. I pretty much followed it to the end, and thought it was pretty good. And consistent, as a commentary on how decadent, factious, hedonistic, and unjust our society has become. How we stifle genius, and how we "fight like Hell" against all possible solutions to our problems. Cesar Catalina could see this, and the evil in his own heart. Julia could see it. If the viewer sees this "New Rome" as a decadent version of modern American society, told in part through symbolism, it can work. But, most younger viewers were not raised to view movies through that lens.

I was reluctant to go to this movie after reading negative reviews. I think a lot of people didn’t get the gist of the storyline. I feel when he couldn’t handle real life he would turn everything off and imagine the dancing and singing. It was his way of coping.
