I find I mix and match every time I go out. I can't really say I've learned the mechanics of it. It's more instinctive. So, I'm sure I will learn something from your videos.

Great videos Simon. To my mind colour is descriptive, black and white is interpretive. I never convert in post - my Lumix GX8 has a customised monochrome setting including the live view…✌️🎄🇦🇺

I have said this for years you need to shoot a B&W photo not just remove the colour haha and we do it.

How annoying, I can only subscribe once, doh 😉 Nice little intromto a topic that I look forward to seeing as you take us through it.. good start and you are right, well in my case -I don't shoot with intention... well 99%of the time. I think sometime over the next few weeksI am going to do just that and go out and shoot B&W with intention... I have already picked up my S5 and changed once of the custom settingto mono view.. I have also added a square crop to the setting. atb Al

Hi Al, thanks for even subscribing once! I'm really enjoying returning to B&W, it's how I started and maybe it's nostalgia, but I'm finding it more creatively fulfilling. So glad to hear you're giving it a go too, look forward to seeing the results... a video maybe? 😊 S5, nice camera that, and i'm envious you can do a square crop, don't think that's possible on my Nikons.

Excellent tips, Simon. Here's a question. I've watched a few of your videos where you have a red filter on your Q2 M. I don't have a camera with a monochrome sensor so would there be any point to using a red or orange filter or should I just convert in post and make the adjustments there?

Thanks for the question, and watching my videos 🙂 A red filter on a colour sensor would only give you a red image, it's only designed for monochrome sensors or black and white film. The colour of the filter takes away that colour, and darkens the colours on the opposite end of the colour spectrum.

I went out yesterday with intent on doing b&w and found that switching to monochrome helped me recognise a good b&w image before taking the shot. Interesting 👏

A simple little hack that does help, although in time you get used to seeing in black and white, ignoring the colour in front of you and just seeing the light and tones.
