Wet earth heat storage has been around for a very long time. It works very well, active or passive. We built a commercial scale greenhouse in this style over 40 years ago at the Ark Project in Prince Edward Island as a demo project, followed by others in PEI and north of Victoria in BC. All used the corrugated plastic pipe for heat transfer below ground and larger galvanised as pick up from the peak of the buildings. The fans always ran in the same direction for obvious reasons. The back walls were painted white to enhance the light levels. We built the glazing panels in our factory using heat shrunk tedlar film on steel frames. No backup heat was used for year round operation.

For those of more modest means... Pop up greenhouses are a good starting point. They're fairly cheap to buy, provide a good environment for plant growth, are wind proof (no, they won't stand against a hurricane, but anything short of that...). The important thing to remember is successional growing. Sow seeds for winter crops in the autumn. Most vegetables will stand low temperatures, some like kale, will thrive in the cold. Just something to consider. Good luck all.

Thank you for sharing this greenhouse it is great. My dad loved swiss chard he grew up in Farmington in fact his house is still at the end of main street. My father would be 99 now and he was born and raised there with his 4 brothers.

Check into a SAND BATTERY for a back up source. Also, by using waste materials you can generate METHANE instead of PROPANE. By incorporating thermal couples in the SAND BATTERY you can generate electricity, FREE OF CHARGE. Definitely GREAT ideas, I have been investigating for DECADES.

@@daveparker839 : Basic sand battery, take a steel trash can, attach it to a dolly, paint it matte black then set it out in full sun all day long. At sunset, bring it inside to radiate heat all night long. At Sunrise, set it outside again. More technically, build a large metal container, insert thermal couplers, wire to batteries and charge batteries all day and night. By filtering your wastewater, separating out the solids, mixing in garden waste you can generate Methane. Do this in a dome and draw the gas from the top into a fiberglass or steel tube with a ten pound weight on top. Water will keep the gas in and it travels through a tube into the house for use. The height of the tube will indicate how much gas you have for use. This is all available online to a more detailed description.

A walipini greenhouse is perfect when you live close to the equator because the sun is perpendicular to the greenhouse but more north you are and less sun you have on the ground of the greenhouse. While the soil is warmer with depth it does not compensate enough for the lack of light if you are located in the north like me, 45 parallel. However adding a geothermal system is a great improvement.

It all depends on angles, that’s why the south facing area accepting sun is so low. You draw a line from the sun during the winter soltice through the sketched design to make sure two things - the light can get through on the south side and that it hits a thermal mass on the interior backside. The width of the greenhouse, the height of the walipini, the angle of the sun accepting area, and how low to the ground the sun accepting area is can be designed to fit any latitude. There are some cool designs people have done in Canada, I’m north of this video’s locations but you can search videos and design depending on your location

Yes, we just use them passively. They are mainly valuable during the winter time when we are still needing to exhaust some of the heat without pulling in freezing temperatures from outside. On my channel under the playlist, I have some video showing the construction and it includes the vent systems.

Yes we have mason bees and the finches help some with pollinating, in the winter we do some hand pollinating. We are looking to expand our mason bees, mantis’ etc

I saw another design that used fans to blow the vents. Did he use that? What does he mean off-grid? Did he design it to function so it needed no electricity or does he use solar energy to get the electricity he needs to run the greenhouse? The fans would require electricity.

Hi Kelly. So is the basement dry or damp and musty? If the latter (damp, musty), you simply can't really use that space. If it's dry (all year round), then it's just space and you can use it like any other space. So, initially, vacuum sealed bags, jars, and put the bags in plastic boxes (large ones) and simply stack. You might want to number the boxes, and keep a written record of inventory, including use by dates. As the stores build you can obtain shelving units (aka, racking) and put stock up on the shelves. Hope this helps.

We have found that zebra finches are fantastic to help top down the aphids. On my channel you’ll see them flying around all the time :-)

My best fix was the miracle grow bottle, a half inch of Dawn dish detergent and use the usual hose method. The aphids refused the nasty taste and by noon the ants were so disappointed at no honey they removed them alllll before nightfall. It was completely finished for the entire summer even though rains washed away the soap.
