When i first started out drawing,I would copy a lot of artist's work and my progress was quite fast.However,I stopped copying bc I naturally thought it is bad and disrespectful to the artists.This really blocked and slowed down my progress (I didn't realize it until recently).I just started studying other artists again and I'm back on track. Edit: Hi! It’s been one year, I am now attending an art academy studying Illustration ^-^! I wish goodluck to everyone on their art journey :)

I 100% stand by replicating other artists work as studies . When I was first starting out I would subconsciously analyze a lot of tumblr artists I liked such as Ctchrysler. I'd redraw his work I admired in a sketchbook and I noticed I would be learning and improving my technical skill drastically as I did so. Its something a lot more people should consider because you'll begin to figure out your own style of doing things after a while !

mi ig gallery is literally 70% ``copied´´, I am a traditional artist, and most of my drawings are hidden from ig, but idk, I mean I like to learn, and my way to do it is like practicing and then doing a big work, with an actual finnished art inspiration. I alternate between 100% priginal (which doesn't really exist xd) and ``copied´´, I mean, I improve a lot, but maybe posting them...I think about it, and sometimes I think what I do is bad and all of that, I don't want to spam here, @the.drawing.senate, but his is my ig, I just want to know someones opinion about this topic...

Thank you very much for this, some people need to stop demonizing copying and master studies, and even tracing or overpaint is fair for practice sake and deconstruct pieces of your favorite artists. I totally agree with the 90 min session, one important part of practicing is focus and simplification, even when working from photos. Great video overall o/

I’ve started doing this with these Bargue plates, and it’s really helping me to figure out how to prioritize information and detail. Also, it’s crazy how difficult it can be to try and make a carbon copy rather than just capture a general likeness-which is what I’m being told to do right now. I think that my love of sketching and figure drawing has helped me a lot, but in order to do these master studies, I have to learn to use a more technical muscle, using straight lines and really studying angles and movement in the lines. Anyway, great video-I’ve been enjoying your channel a lot and it’s fun to see your progress on IG as well. I love how clean your work looks, regardless of whether your painting or just using lines. There’s a very pleasing aesthetic through it all. Keep up the wonderful work, you make me want to go digital!

I think the key of copying wlop art is to use the brush he uses I know it sounds wrong but it actually works. There's a brush he uses to paint fabrics/clothes that can easily emulate the appearance of real fabrics. Sure you can work on any brush for that but the results would be slightly different than how he does it.

I failed the first quarter of a class in middle school, so I made a fake report card. I did this every quarter that year. I forgot that they mail home the end-of-year cards, and my mom got it before I could intercept with my fake. She was PISSED-at the school for their error. The teacher also retired that year and had already thrown out his records, so they had to take my mother’s “proof” (the fake ones I made throughout the year) and “correct” the “mistake.” I’ve never told her the truth.

Not sure if anyone else asked already, but for digital work, how useful is tracing compared to side-by-side copying for learning? I copy side-by-side when drawing on paper. But for digital, since I learned how to trace, I make lines on top of the reference layer. But it feels too easy, and I feel like I'm not going to learn much.
@mariumkhalid73883 жыл бұрын
Tbh I don't think just tracing is super helpful? What I would suggest is break down your reference photo side by side and then overlay it on top of the reference to see what you've done wrong and try to see a pattern in your mistakes. Another way would be to first trace simple shapes off the reference (no fancy details) then try freehanding your traced drawing side by side and compare those two

does anyone know if you should replicate the artist's process (like lineart, then colors etc) or just color pick and paint what you see? hope someone can answer this cuz im rlly confused ;-;
@stopitplz68303 жыл бұрын
It depends on what the goal of a study is. If the focus is colors, then I think you should try to find the right colors yourself first and put them on the canvas. If they don't seem to look right, then you can try color picking and see what you interpreted wrong. The way one uses color picker during study may depend. For example, you can use color picker and just recreate the artists palette without recreating the image, or you can try to make a 'copy' of the image. Thing is it's not just about copying but understanding why an artist made one choice or another. Also, by copying, I don't mean that everything should look 1:1. When you study colors then you're free to stylize things like ergojosh did. He studied the values, but he didn't exactly copy everything - he stylized the face. Ofc that's optional, and it's up to you whether you'd like to do anything like that. The point is to achieve the goal of the study. He didn't study WLOP's style of drawing faces but his use of values, and he succeeded in achieving the goal of the study. I hope I didn't make things harder to understand and if I did then you feel free to ask questions! I'm not a professional working artists yet and the things I said are my personal opinion, so feel free to experiment and find your own way of doing studies which will help you improve. Also, whether you follow artists process or not it's up to you. The goal is the most important and you choose how to reach it but you can also study artist's process to perhaps find tricks that will make your own process easier :)

it think its absolutely useless to do a values study from grayscaled photo, simply a waste of time. Better do it from color, it trains your eye to see actual values and not be a copy paste machine
@Fantisma7 Жыл бұрын
Value studies are good for when u only want to focus on the values. when ur doing colour u have to focus on both the values and the colours, temperature, etc. ofc it’s good to focus on both but it’s better in all aspects of art and studies in general to take things one step at a time before tackling them all at once
