Improve Pasture Quality - Pasture Clipping. The pasture area in one of our fields is slowly improving but we are having a little bit of trouble with invasive species of weeds and saplings.
We are trying to restore our pastures so we can graze more ruminants on them like cattle, sheep or goats. This pasture was covered in thick briars, tree saplings and other invasive weeds just one year ago. Through pasture management by using pigs to till and then sheep to graze, we are starting to see an improvement in the pasture quality. We are building soil and encouraging desired species to grow in the pasture and overtake the weeds.
Clipping pastures makes the area look better, adds carbon material to the soil, gives the lower lying species more sunlight and improves water retention on the land.
Sheraton Park Farms practices holistic, sustainable farming and soil building using a rotational grazing model as we try to grow more grass on our farm.

A lot of times your biggest weed patches is where drains for rain control is. In other words, seeds get washed downed from people who aren’t trying to control the weeds but you really are doing a good job as far as pasture

Love it. It is a Kioti CK4010. Only wish the front end loader would lift a little more. Maxes out at about 1200lbs.

After you ran the pigs thru that pasture last year, did you have to come back and level it out or did you leave it alone?
@SheratonParkFarms
@SheratonParkFarms 3 жыл бұрын
On this particular spot we did not come back and level. I did fill in some big holes from our farrowing paddock that the sows dug so we could mow over it. This pasture does have some dips in it but no big holes. Appreciate ya'll watching.

Why do all the farming videos have so much music. I would rather hear the tractor and the mower working

Why don’t you want the grass to go to seed? Wouldn’t that be more food for the animals as it reseeds the pasture?
@SheratonParkFarms
@SheratonParkFarms 3 жыл бұрын
In a grazing paddock, when the grass goes to seed, it is less palatable to the animals. Grass also grows in a sigmoid curve. You want the animals grazing when the grass is mid-life (between the infant, new stage and the older seed stage). At that point the grass is highest in nutrients and most attractive to the animals. When pruned (eaten) at that state it recovers faster and captures more carbon. In this field, it was not a big deal because we aren't grazing it. Appreciate ya'll watching.
